HoosierCat Posted March 9, 2005 Report Posted March 9, 2005 Bummer... Weathersby urged to retireBy Chick LudwigDayton Daily NewsNearly a year after his near-fatal car crash, cornerback Dennis Weathersby's future with the Bengals remains shrouded in doubt.Head coach Marvin Lewis told the Agonis Club late Monday night that Bengals team doctors have recommended that Weathersby not play football again.Weathersby's representatives at Premier Management in Henderson, Nev., said they wanted to speak with Weathersby and his rehabilitation specialist before making any public comment.Weathersby spent the entire 2004 season on the Reserve/Non-Football Injury list after sustaining a head injury on April 12 when the 1996 Chevrolet Impala SS he was driving crashed into a utility pole on a rain-slicked highway ramp in the Cincinnati suburb of Springdale. The car crash marked Weathersby's second tragedy within a year. On April 20, 2003 — Easter Sunday, just six days before the 2003 NFL Draft — Weathersby was shot in the back as he walked to his truck on a street in Duarte, Calif., northeast of Los Angeles. The Bengals decided to take a chance on Weathersby, making him their fourth-round draft pick (No. 98 overall). The 6-foot-1, 204-pounder, who won a Pac-10 award as the most outstanding male student-athlete at Oregon State for the 2002-03 school year, played in only four games as a rookie on special teams and didn't record a tackle.Even though the Bengals were not obligated to pay Weathersby in 2004 because his injury was not football related, the club honored Weathersby's contract and paid him his $305,000 salary. bengalboomer7 Posted March 9, 2005 Report Posted March 9, 2005 Yah, life can be cruel sometimes, but I'm gald he will lead a normal life, walking and talking and such. Quote
stuck Posted March 9, 2005 Report Posted March 9, 2005 Glad that they honored his contract. Points out the difference between the "old" and the "new" B'gals. Quote
DontPushMe Posted March 9, 2005 Report Posted March 9, 2005 Glad that they honored his contract. Points out the difference between the "old" and the "new" B'gals. It doesnt point to anything, MB has ALWAYS been loyal to his players. And this news doesnt shock me at all. I knew there was no chance he would ever play again. Quote
BengalszoneBilly Posted March 9, 2005 Report Posted March 9, 2005 Sad news indeed. A man must make sacrifices, and it appears that if he wants to remain healthy, he must sacrifice his football career. I wish him luck. Quote
Sox Posted March 9, 2005 Report Posted March 9, 2005 I wonder if there is a non-playing position the Bengals could offer him.A foot in the door towards coaching if you will. Quote
bengalboomer7 Posted March 9, 2005 Report Posted March 9, 2005 I'm sure Marivn has NO say in if he gets paid or not DPM since it's not his name that is signed on the check. I can't believe I'm saying this, but it was a class move by the Brown family to help him out this long in paying his contract and helping him rehabilitate with team doctors. Quote

The Brown family has always been loyal and I'm sure they're good people. It's the football operations that always steamed me and the overwelming anger from that that's blinded many from thinking the Brown is anything other than football's satan.Did I just say that? Quote

I can't believe I'm saying this, but it was a class move by the Brown family to help him out this long in paying his contract and helping him rehabilitate with team doctors. this is actually incorrect. Remember reports that Marvin had a lot to do with Jon Kitna getting his bonus money. Quote
bengalboomer7 Posted March 9, 2005 Report Posted March 9, 2005 Reports are one thing, marvin's name on the check is another. He may have some influence but as far as money goes I doubt much Quote
rob_justdmb Posted March 9, 2005 Report Posted March 9, 2005 but you said he had NO say. Capitalized and everything. The way the Bengals work these days, if it's reported it's probably true because they little info out. Quote

jditty47 Posted March 9, 2005 Report Posted March 9, 2005 that sucks that he wont play football again, but at least he will fully recover with his health. Quote

richmond_mat Posted March 9, 2005 Report Posted March 9, 2005 Maybe the defense would have been better had he been healthy. Who knows? The bottem line now is: How much salary cap does this clear? I suspect that it's not much. But it ought satisfy a rookie. Quote
tibor75 Posted March 9, 2005 Report Posted March 9, 2005 I wonder if there is a non-playing position the Bengals could offer him.A foot in the door towards coaching if you will. Those spots are filled by our current defensive linemen.... Quote
Ox Posted March 10, 2005 Report Posted March 10, 2005 Well I guess on the bright side I can update my madden '05! Quote
BengalNation1281 Posted March 10, 2005 Report Posted March 10, 2005 Well I guess on the bright side I can update my madden '05! Good looking on the bright side, ox It's too bad that this happened. Weathersby was a stud in college, and I have a pretty good feeling that he would have been a stud in the pros. Hopefully the front office will find something for him to do now that he can't play.I wish him all the luck in the world...damn shame. Quote
