Ickeyshuffler
Here's what you're advocating. For the difference in what you think Rudi is worth to this team and what you know he's worth on the open market...a range of 2-3 million bucks...mad money that will be targeted for use on currently unknown defensive help....you're risking a potential problem on offense so serious that it would likely ruin a season of real promise.Hmmm...not quite what I'm getting at -- though I wouldn't go so far as to say "currently unknown defensive help" considering trade possibilities (I wouldn't advocate getting rid of rudi for nothing at all, of course, and a 2nd or even early 3rd round draft pick can make quite a difference on D (see Madieu, LJohnson, and with any luck Ratliff this year) and the fact that Bell, Hartwell, Burgess, as well as Donovin Darius, Simon, and a few others who MIGHT be available in trade (probably not straight up, and I guess if Fred Taylor is healthy -- I'm never quite sure -- Jax isn't a possibility, but...) are still around along with a few more who would certainly help this team. Mainly, though, I'm sayin that A-train or a serviceable replacement combined with Perry's potential will be just fine and won't spoil anything considering what Rudi is. I guarantee that behind this line Anthony Thomas will be very similar - maybe not quite as good as Rudi (I do like him, as I keep saying, he sure as hell keeps his feet moving) but good enough to balance out a Perry or Watson (is it just me or is Kenny Watson a darn good running back at least on third down?) and keep our same old "hit the hole, hope it's there, if its not, hit it anyway" attack on 1rst and 2nd every damn game. Also, it's not just money this year -- a long term contract at 5-6 like Rudi wants will A keep that 2-3 million unusable for years to come and B hinder the Bengals ability to let Chris Perry take over if he proves to be able to run up the gut AND SOME. You just can't pay someone 5 mil to sit on the bench. I might be happier if the Bengals just keep him this year at 6.3 to see how Perry pans out as JoiseyCat mentioned, but all this talk of a long term contract has me doing a double-take.Finally, if we can nab a pick or two for Rudi it may give us the freedom to take a Heath Miller in the first or an Alex Smith in the second (or the 2-3 mil it would probably take this year to sign Becht!) while still addressing our D -- making this, especially with Perry if he pans out, a terrific offense to say the least and not ruined in any way, shape, or form. You just can't pay someone 5 mil to sit on the bench. I happen to prefer the plan that begins and ends with Chris Perry getting as many touches as he earns. I also like the idea of having Perry and Johnson together, not choosing between the two over money issues. As far as a long term deal for Rudi? Well, I like any plan that has the Bengals completely set at the RB position for the next 4 or 5 years of playoff football....but I'll take things one season at a time if that's the way things shake out. HairOnFire
I agree. That said, however, the Colts have provided ample evidence in recent years that teams do not win by offense alone. Or to use your metaphor, the Bengals have to be able to take a punch as well as deliver one. No argument, the defense has to improve. But who says it can't improve enough in a season where the injury bug is felt less, young players improve greatly due to last seasons playing experience, a different coordinator calling the shots, and the addition of one or two starters from the coming draft? Trade scenarios that return multiple high draft picks are great to think about...and would have to be considered if they actually come...but right now I can't think of a valid reason to consider risking a season we've waited more than a decade to arrive. No one says it can't. In fact, it likely will. Unfortunately, none of those are unique to the Bengals. Every team has 2004 rooks who now have more experience. Everyone has injured players back. Everyone's gonna get draft picks. The question isn't whether we'll improve, that's quite likely. The question is, will we improve relative to other teams (and specifically those that made the playoffs last year)? At this point, I have trouble seeing where we're making up ground. Honestly, I'm beginning to have a disturbing flashback to 2001-02. Remember? We had that "top ten 10" in 2001. Remember all the talk about us as a dark horse candidate for the playoffs? Who was it, Spikes, with the "why not us?" comment that drew headlines? Pete Prisco on sportline.com gushing over us (and he still craps on the bengals now after how dumb they made him look). I recall being one of the lone voices crying in the wilderness that they hadn't done anything to improve, that Westbrook and Frerotte were hardly worth talking about, and being shouted down by the legions of the "we're on the verger-ers." Well, hopefully all the vergers are right this time, but I'm not buying in yet.
greenday333
So based on your logic Dillon is an average back also, because his numbers are WORSE over-all his last 3 years here than Rudi's. But we saw how Dillon's production immediately jumped to career highs when he went to a great team. please don't compare rudi to dillon. You will just make yourself look stupid.how about this one:345 carries 1635 yards 12 tds 13 tds, 4.7 ypc, super bowl champion^^^ the truthCorey Dillon = football god you could put 15 backs on the patriots and they'd all get those stats.don't be a fool. Yeah just like Antoine SmithGood Call
TJJackson
not-another: Any chance you'd consider removing the near naked female pics from your sig?Really out of place on this board, and problematic when I am trying to read about the Bengals but it looks like I am surfing porn.....I am no prude, and the pics aren't inherently offensive or anything, I just don't want to have them on my screen over and over and over again while I am trying to read these forums.Seriously. Thus, for the first time ever my resistance to pie-eyed optimism has completely crumbled. And for proof, consider the following. Screw being on the verge. We've arrived. Now lets go get some. I want one thing, tho: if the Bengals do indeed go into the toilet again (and I hope and pray they won't, but if they do), no self-imposed posting ban this time around, buddy-boy. You hang out and suffer with all the rest of us!
