DT Martin Signed for '05

Not big news, but a good move IMHO. From da site...

The Bengals signed defensive tackle Terrance Martin to a one-year contract extension Friday that runs through 2005. The 6-2, 323-pound Martin, a former Texan, is a third-year NFL player who was on the roster for the final nine games last season, played in two games, and had a tackle ...

I like this move. If he can keep from getting injured again I think he should get significant playing time, preferably as a backup or as a platoon player for a quality FA pickup...even though I'm not sure which FA would be the best option at this point.

But he's young, and he's big, so hopefully he can do some good on the line and progress enough that we will want him to sign a few more one-year contracts.

I'd be happy if he had 6 sacks next year :D

Martin was passed over on the waiver wire after he was released by Texans before start of 2004 season and sat the season until Bengals signed him midway when the obvious finally prompted action --- get some GD DTs

Shaun Smith was claimed on waivers after Saints released him during the season. He saw much more game action w/ Bengals than Martin and looked potentially dominant on D-line in rotation.

But Smith seems to have motivation and weight issues so the Martin signing looks like a good decision for now, especially if Askew is a no show again and no free agents or draft picks are taken at DT.

Could you (schweinhart) refresh my memory as to Mr. Askew and "no showing," or are you just referring to him not making the starting defensive lineup? I like this guys build, I just hope he can play...eventually.

I'd be mainly referring to the pre-season when Askew apparently didn't understand he was allowed to move his feet to fight blockers. He was just locking horns and going nowhere and doing nothing.

This apparently never improved during the season because I'm not sure he played more than 10 snaps. Then there was his injury issue which I can't remember what his problem was because by then he had thoroughly been discounted from being any kind of a factor in 2004.

We'll see about 2005 :D

I never saw him, but he couldn't have played in this fashion in college, and we still drafted him as high as we did, could we!?!

.......................

Nevermind...don't answer that. <_< Some things are better left unknown.

If you go back to the video interview with D-line Coach Hayes he said Askew was getting at least 15 snaps a game until he got hurt and had knee surgery. He said he was going to increase that but then he had the surgery. I'm sure he is going to improve with more and more snaps.

The link is the Bengals.com profile on Askew.

He got his knee scoped after the opener vs. Jets, which may have meant he had problems in pre-season too. I dunno.

There is a definite upside to Askew given his performance in college and his size. The pick was still a good one IMO even if only to see if they can develop him to contribute this year and next year.

For whatever reason, Askew's pre-season performance didn't show that he'd be ready in time for the season. Had he not got injured, maybe he develops enough by mid-season to make a difference. I saw nothing from him in regular games that seemed to suggest that, though.

But the pick was still good, like Jumpy Jr. and Andrews the Giant. Thing was with Askew was that he had more pressure to get something done than the other 2 because the Bengals neglected to draft a DT before or after him or acquire another DT when it was obvious that they needed to last year.

Askew got by on strength in collage.. He's learning techniques now.. Progress was stunted by injury but he will make progress and be a factor in 05. Martin is nothing but an emergency backup.. Smith is a practice squad player...

Bengals still need a stud on the line.. Hopefully they see fit to draft Antaaj Hawthorne of Wisconsin...
