I can't believe people take this stuff so personally. Even if Rudi Johnson was directing his agent, which he probably isn't, trying to use what little leverage he has to make the franchise tag less attractive to the Bengals means he's like morally corrupt or something? This is a NEGOTIATION.

That being said, I have a hard time seeing him getting a long term contract at the money he probably wants here, and I doubt that he should get it here. He's still too one-dimensional and the Bengals need to be too economical for that. He may not really want to stay a Bengal all that badly anyway. Unless a guy REALLY wants to leave, like the much-despised Corey Dillon, they all say that humble-pie stuff about wanting to stay. Then they ask for the bank and jump ship as soon as some other sucker is willing to pay it.

Well yes, it's an indirect form of negotiation. I think of it more as a form of leverage like you said.

like the much-despised Corey Dillon

I personally don't despise Corey Dillon. I admire his ability as a running back, but you can't help to admit that you wish he hadn't left Cincinnati under such circumstances. It was a disappointing end to a hell of a career in a tough town to play football in at the time.

Things are currently much better for both Corey Dillon (on his way to a Super Bowl) and the Cincinnati Bengals, (finally back to respectability in the league) so IMHO it worked out for the best for all parties involved!

I say we tag him, then trade him to either Arizona or Oakland for their 2nd round pick....1st would be great!

2nd rd pick would be too low IMO. Of course that's what was gotten for Dillon but his infantile demeanor contributed to a lesser trade.

1st would be great and should be more workable for like you say to Zona or Al Davis.

But I'd personally rather see a player -- say Jake Grove or Ifeanyi Ohalete -- and a 2nd rd pick. If another player is involved, the trading team is bound for the remaining signing bonus of the contract for a cap hit in 2005.

A view from a Buffalo writer...not directly about Rudi, talking about Henry's value, but he thinks Rudi & Henry are about equal and doesn't rank RJ among the top 15 NFL backs. FWIW...

I tend to agree...

Nice catch Joisey. I damn well agree, except that I might bump up Henry and Rudi on his list because of their youth. They are more valuable than C-Mart for team's looking to their future. But, otherwise, yeah, he is that low. One year doesn't make him worth the money he is seeking. It just doesn't.

I love this... "projected production. Versatility, durability, recent past performance and potential are the major factors in this analysis." Pretty much gives free reign on analysis; barring injury of course.

I do agree with the majority of his list. I'm a little confused on Kevin Jones though, I didn't think he should be ahead of Priest Holmes, Ahman Green, Deuce McAllister, and

Brian Westbrook. But based on Matthews pre-conditions, I guess the ranking can go either way.

Then again, anything called Democrat and Chronicle must mean progressivism. ^_^^_^

A little of the topic but how can he have the Indians at better odds to win the WS than the reds, that guy is nuts. By the way, if anyone has ESPN Insider there is a great article on the Reds and their offseason moves. But that statement right there makes him crazy

Think division BB. We (the Reds) still have to face the Cards, the 'Stros (who always f'in beat us), and the Cubs (who's probably on our plain now, provided their yearly breakdown of starting pitching continues this season).

The Indians have the Twins, which being from Minnesota and follow the team closely, won't be a hard feat.

I like his criteria, but how he applied them, who knows? And of course this is a "general" look; any team looking at the RB market is going to have its own set of qualifications and that would change the list. I just thought it was interesting as a "3rd party" type of view.

Personally, I've always thought of Rudi as:

Top 5? No.

Top 10? Maybe.

Top 15? Probably.

Top 20? Definitely.

If he were to improve his receiving skills, then I think he could legitimately challenge for top 10 consideration.

Don't get me wrong JC, I love as many looks of personal top-n (n=number) rankings of positional players and I agree, Rudi won't demand much attention with the amount of RB's coming out.

BUT, Rudi has never stated he wants money. In fact, the one opportunity to pick up top-five RB pay (i.e F-tag) or top-ten RB pay (T-tag), he opted to sit. So that's gotta be encouraging. Right? Anyone? Hello?

To me, it seem encouraging that the rumored demands are in the $5-6 million/year "franchise tag" range. So it doesn't appear Rudi and/or his agent are out there asking for ludicrious sums. However, that's still too much for Rudi, IMHO, and I've no idea how much he's willing to back off.

So my question is if they tag him and he sits do the Bengals still own his rights until he plays again or does he become a free agent again at the start of the following year?

As part of the CBA, the Bengals, by theory, could tag him each season until the end of his career if they wanted to -- I'm not sure if there's a limitation of the number tags on a single player with a single team (see, Pace). Of course, this wouldn't be fiscally responsible nor would it help against the cap.

The Bengals would be better off to sign him to a long term deal -- financially of course, not 3rd and 1s.

heres a offer for rudi: 3 year 11 million dollars and a 2-4 mill signing bonus. he aint worth more than that. anything more than that we overpayed.

Jditty...save this post! When Rudi does sign, (and he will!) I'm betting these numbers will be damn close!
