stupid salary cap

I've been reading all the info i can on next years salary cap and I can't find anything definitive. Like I said earlier, it's been anywhere between 4 and 16 mil. Now, there is a hell of alot of different things you can do with 16 mil that you cant do with 4. That's why I've tried not to say anything about Rudi or TJ cause if we have a lot of money we can sign them both and make some free agent moves. To me, this holds the key for a ton of crazy discussions on this board(not like we won't have most of them anyway :P ). I know I've talked a bit with a few guys on this but does anyone really know what it's going to be? Hobson's a moron so I try not to go by what he says but knowing this would make it a lot easier for all of us would be GM's in here (especially me!!)

Yeah, but who do you beleive is scary accurate, I thought I was someting with Marvin (an interview or someting, I'm sure you guys remember it was when Trumpy blasted Marvin saying he didn't have a clue) that implies they have a good amount of room, but guys like Hobson keep saying it's gonna be real tight. Once all of this clears up, then we'll get a lot better idea of what's going to happen to our FA's and if we'll go for any other FA's

Usually I just go with ESPN, because their credibility is on the line. Coaches or GMs will give you a figure, but it doesn't hurt them if it's inaccurate -- it doesn't matter to them until they get the official number. Sources, like ESPN, need the numbers to work out right so people keep coming back. Of course you have to wait until they say something unless Lenny or Clayton release something -- and with playoffs going on right now, I wouldn't expect anything soon.

We need a cap expert here on the staff -- hummmm... BB? :P

That crap is so complicated you'd have to get a rocket scientist, but on a similar note I was looking at the particulars of Shaun Rogers contract (DT I wanted, plays for Detroit) at profootballtalk.com Look at that for a sec and it will show you how wacky contracts and caps can get. They made out like he was the highest paid Dt and he got screwed in my opinion, especially if you look at the initial figure (46mil

Someone call my name? Actually, I'm not exactly a rocket scientist, but pretty close. I think the salary cap is something akin to the QB rating formula or the BCS -- even if someone did explain it to you, you still wouldn't understand. I'm just going to wait for some reputable source to say what the cap is.

So even if you add Palmer`s $4million escalator it STILL is $17

million under the $ 80.5 million of THIS YEARS CAP.

The cap should go up AT LEAST to $85 million next year.

Of course that isn`t counting our own Free Agents(14 players I think),

the 8 players on the practice squad.

They make $73,500 a piece...which is $588,000 total, the $1 Million we are supposed to be over the cap because of the players we had on IR this year.....

I got those numbers from here.

http://bengalsjungle.com/players_salaries.html

And from here.

I saw you post the same thing earlier oldschooler and don't take offense when I say this but do you know how accurate that really is?

Well I spent over an hour compiling all that info from the

inter-net.

I`m pretty sure the cap hit numbers from Bengals Jungle are accurate.

And I KNOW the base salary numbers from NFLPA.com are VERY accuarte.

Let`s just say it is a decent ballpark figure.

At this point, the cap is expected to go up to $85 million, give or take a bit.

According to what Marvin has said (in his Trumpy-can-go-eff-himself article on bengals.com) the Bengals right now are about $1 million over the $80 million 2004 cap, thanks to Palmer hitting his incentives and having to sign so many guys to fill in for those on IR.

Marvin also says there's about $10 million in dead money in 2004 that goes away.

If you go through the numbers on bengalsjungle.com (which isn't the whole roster but is the best source I know of) you'll fijnd something like $9-$10 million of 2004 dollars coming off because of contracts that are up (Tony Williams, Carl Powell, Rudi's $1.8 million RFA deal, etc.). However, there's also about $7 million in raises, big and large (Chad makes another $400k, for instance, Brad St. Louis gets $5k more, etc.) So net-net the Bengals ought to get a couple million there.

So: 85 - 81 = $4 million in "new" cap space.

4 + 10 dead money = $14 million.

14 + 2-3 in gone v. raises = $16-17 million in cap space.

Against that, we're looking at:

$5 million for Rudi

$2-3 million for TJ

$1 million for Braham

$3 million for the rookie pool = $11-12 million if the Bengals do all of what they want to do plus the draft.

Still, that leaves $5-6 million we ought to have to play with in FA. Cutting the like of Kevin Hardy, Reggie Kelley, and restructuring Willie Anderson could free up about $5 million more space. That still leaves some spots to fill (Hardy's, still haven't done anything about Powell, etc.) but even if that chews up $3,4,5 million we should still have room for one big deal (think $5-6 million/year range) or a couple smaller ones.

Of course, Mikey always likes to leave a few million for emergencies, which it should be admitted came in handy this year.

That's about as near as I can figure it from what's been out there now.

All I know is that they are paying WAY TOO MUCH for guys like Reggie Kelly, Kevin Hardy, John Thorton and Nate Webster combined.

You could cut all 4 of those guys and not lose a whole lot, if anything, depending on whom they are replaced with. I'd take one or two impact FA's that you have to pay $5-$6m a year, instead of four mediocre guys like that and pay 'em the same amount.

Surely you could find FA's and draft picks to replace those guys with that are better. Not a single one of them is an upper echleon player in the NFL, nor were they for long before coming here.

There's enough veterans left to dispose of this dead weight on defense. It's ridiculous when you figure in guys like Tony Williams, Herring and KK. Geesh. I really hope Marvin turns the whole group over with younger, faster, cheaper guys like he has been - but even more so this off-season.

Also, the Browns and/or Hobson will always state that they are tight against the cap, always. They will never say otherwise it seems.

Oh, calm down...signing bonuses are prorated...

http://www.mariononline.com/articles/sport...0011/001198.htm

Chris Perry, the Bengals' first-round draft pick, signed his contract Tuesday afternoon at the team's training camp headquarters. He will practice with the Bengals for the first time this morning.  Perry has missed 10 days of training camp during his holdout.

Perry's deal is for 5 years and worth more than $7 million with $3 million in backside incentives. He will receive a $3.9 million split signing bonus.  He just picked up $2.1 million and will get another $1.8 million next year.

So his $2.1 million over 5 years = $420,000/year prorated

$1.8 million this year over 4 years = $450,000/year prorated

plus salary as provided of $380,000 = cap hit of $1.25 million.
