Defense suddenly playing GREAT

BengalBax

Recommended Posts

Well BAX one reason I think we are 4-6 is we have played a good schedule this year with a few tough games coming up. Plus this has to be one of the youngest teams in the leauge.(like to know how to find that out) Next few years when you jump on the CARSON PALMER band wagon we will make room for ya!!!

So why are we 4-6? Every game we have won has been due to our defense giving us great field position and forcing turnovers. What could be the problem? Well, things like this keep happening (see below picture for details)

Yeah the Defense is "suddenly playing great"

SINCE that pic in your signature.

They have gone 2-1 since then too.

Palmer played good enough to win against the Jets.

Where was that D then ?

I don`t think people are realizing how much losing

Warrick affected this team.

This year our number 2 WR TJ Houshmandzadeh has 32 catches

for 405 yards and 0 TD`s.

He is on pace to end the season with 52 catches for 648 yards and O TD`s.

Warrick had 79 catches for 819 yards and 7 TD`s.

Big difference. And not having that true #2 threat with Warrick has made CJ`s

numbers drop significantly, ecspecially his TD`s.

Not to mention Warricks blocking skills for the running game.

How about the Bengals being ranked 13th overall in Rushing Offense

last year and this year they are 25th overall in Rushing Offense.

http://www.nfl.com/stats/teamsort/NFL/OFF-...NG/2004/regular

In 10 games Palmer has played 8 games against Defenses that are in the

top 10 in overall Defense.

Steelers #1 (lost twice in the 4th quarter)

Washington #2 (won)

Baltimore # 3 (lost in 4th quarter bt Palmer threw for over 300 yards)

Denver #6 (won)

Miami #7 (won)

Jets #9 (lost in 4th quarter ...no rush D)

Titans #10 (lost in 4th quarter inside Titans red zone)

http://www.nfl.com/stats/teamsort/NFL/DEF-...ar?sort_col_1=4

Oh and Ben Roethlisberger is playing on a team that has the #1 Defense

and are ranked #1 in Rushing Offense.

The Steelers are ranked 26th in passing while the Bengals are ranked

21st in passing ...go figure.

Absolutely oldschooler! Warrick's blocking skills certainly don't get mentioned loud enough ;) Peter Warrick is one of the best downfield blockers in the game. PW's blocking contributed to the breakawy runs that are less common this season. Neither CW or TJ come close. PW's blocking benfited CJ at times too.

Here let me kill you with a few more stats and FACTS.

So hopefully you will see how stupid you sound bashing

Palmer constantly after only 10 GAMES. <_<

Take all of my above post into account too.

Actually Palmer had a pretty good game against the

Titans. He threw 246 yards 1 INT and 0 TD`s

Rudi Johnson had 57 YARDS ON 17 carries though.

The Defense made Voleck look like a seasoned vet.

He threw for 210 yards and had 2 TD`s and 1 INT that Madieu

returned for a TD.

Palmer got the ball with 2:07 left started at the Bengals 33 yard line

and drove it down into the Titans red zone.

On that drive he went 5-8 for 53 yards with 1 incompletetion and 2 spikes.

He made a bone head play and they lost.

But the Defense allowed a back up QB to throw for 2 TD`s

and the RB to run for 147 yards and another TD that forced Palmer

into that situation to even HAVE to drive them into scoring position

in the 1st place ....WHICH HE DID.

http://www.nfl.com/gamecenter/playbyplay/N...0041031_CIN@TEN

Palmer played good enough to win against the Jets.

Where was the D then ?

http://www.nfl.com/gamecenter/live/NFL_20040912_CIN@NYJ

How about against the Ravens when Palmer was FORCED to

throw the ball 52 TIMES because the Defense let Jamal Lewis

run all over them and took a 17-3 lead into the half ?

Palmer threw for 316 yards and lead the Bengals back to within

8 points in the 4th quarter. Then Jamal Lewis ran a 75 TD that

broke the Bengals back.

http://www.nfl.com/gamecenter/live/NFL_20040926_BAL@CIN

What about the Browns game when Rudi rushed for 57 yards

and CJ had the dropsies ? Palmer threw the only TD the Offense

got and only threw 1 INT. He played good enough to win.

Where was every1 else that game ?

They're still the sieve of the NFL.

Not by a long shot Tater! At least not anymore. Look what they held Droughns and Portis to in those games against some of the top rushing teams in the league. In fact they've improved so much that they're actually a reasonable pick, defense-wise, in fantasy football leagues! They scored me MUCHO points against Pittsburg with all the sacks!

How about the Bengals being ranked 13th overall in Rushing Offense

last year and this year they are 25th overall in Rushing Offense.

IMO, this has been the MAJOR factor in why the Bengals record stands where it is. Had Cincinnati been able to move the ball effectively on the ground this season, they easily could be standing at 6-4 or even better right now. I don't blame Rudi though. It seems that more often than not there just isn't a hole for him to run through or penetration starts slowing him up before he can even get to the opening in the line!

Well let's see...

Every Game that we have Won.

Washington:

One TD Drive of 47 Yards.

The other TD Drive was 63 Yards.

Dallas:

Palmer hits Schobel for a 76 Yard TD Pass.

Palmer Runs the other TD in himself, capping off a 66 Yard Drive.

Denver:

Palmer Connected with Chad Johnson on a 50 Yard TD Pass.

The other TD was scored on a 80 Yard Drive....

Miami:

The Winning Drive Started on the Bengals own 20 yard line.

And by the way that play that you show in your picture....

It came at the end a 58 Yard Drive when Haynesworth came Free Behind Palmer, Blind sided him and STRIPPED the Ball.

Now IF you Want to Get a Picture of a QB Just F***ing around and Dropping the Ball....

Find a Picture of Big Ben's Fumble at the BENGALS 20 Yard Line that Ended the 1st half of last weeks game.

Thanks Billy. B)

Pretty nice board you all have here.

I try to provide stats and facts to show people

why I think the way I think.

Here`s a little more.

Kitna averaged 224 yards a game in his "career year".

Palmer is averaging 206 with 6 games to go.

I think when all the pieces fall in place around Palmer

he will be a star in the NFL. And maybe the best QB to ever wear

the stripes. :player:

Who-Dey !!!!!!

Let`s beat the Clowns !!!!!!! :player:

I read on another board that our D is ranked 4th on TSNFF. Here is what they have

Ratbirds--251.5

Squeelers--247.0

Patriots--218.5

BENGALS--203.5

Eagles--202.0

Seahawks--195.5

Jets--189.5

Bears--183.2

Redskins--182.0

Colts--177.7

Wow, we are ahead of the Eagles, numbers wise. Makes me a very happy Bengals fan. They have come so far!!!

As I recall, before the season started, we were all worried about how the Defense was going to be worrisome. Now we are worried about the offensive line. Oh how things turn around. :)

Ain't it weird that as soon as Bax titled this thread "Defense is suddenly playing great", they stop playing great!?! Please stop talking about how good the "D" is. You're JINXING them!!

Please keep hating on Carson though. It seems the more you try to tear him down here with you posts, the better he performs on the field, so folks, let him talk all the trash he wants to about Palmer! Which ever way you go, the team does the opposite, so please...PLEASE start hating the defense too!

In fact they've improved so much that they're actually a reasonable pick, defense-wise, in fantasy football leagues!

<_< So much for THAT!! What the hell was I thinking?

I was just going to say that..... Where the hell did the D go this week? At least James and O'Neal got picks to make a difference.

Unfortunately thats the downside to a young D. Inconsistancy. At least this time when they stunk up the joint the O was able to pull their fat out of the frier. The O should never ever have to score 50+ points to win a game. But I guess it's payback for last week.

Can't really blame it all on the D. Carson's picks gave the Clowns the ball on the Cincy 7, 28, and 1. Even if the D keeps them out of the end zone on all 3 drives they still put up 9 on FGs virtually automatically. As it was they put up 17.

Of course, the D did cough up 31 on its own <_< . They did make up some of that with a score on the O'Neal runback, and the INT by James was key to getting us 3 at the end of the half...I dunno. Half of me wants to pat them on the back and the other half wants to kick them in the a$$. Bet Marvin feels the same way .

Hold on a sec--our defense just let Kelly F. Holcomb go 30 for 39--over 400 yards passing and 5 TDs!!!!!!!

That's NOT a major improvement--and they definitely AREN'T playing "GREAT".

Jerome "The Puss" Bettis had 129 rushing yards against that "great" defense.

I don't know where you guys are from--but where I'm from--that's not playing great.

Something I actually agree with you on, barb.

Defense wasnt up to full speed. They was letting Holcomb, davis, the tightends run and make touchdowns.

Even if it WAS yesterday, bra--letting an old-assed Bettis ramble for 129 isn't playing "GREAT".

;)

Yards, schmards. Points are what matter and the D only coughed up 10 against Pitt. That's great by any definition. Poor play on offense cost us that game, not the D.

Joisey,

What does someone rushing for 129 yards mean to you???

Let's see if you can get this one right.

It means 12 points to me in fantasy football....

But seriously, Yards are kinda a misonomer....like I was saying before, you can break off two huge runs before being stuffed every other run, and plus, you can run all those yards and still have the ball stripped from you, have drive's stalled and fail to score TD's

YPC are integral but its not the only part of the game.
