BengalszoneBilly
The rookie with the biggest impact to me personally would have to be RB Chris Perry hands down. Why Chris, you may wonder!?! BECAUSE I'M STILL MAJORLY *#@%!*#@ DISAPPOINTED WE TOOK HIM #1 OVER ALL WHEN (IMHO) CINCY SHOULD HAVE BEEN DRAFTING SOME SOLID HELP FOR THE DEFENSIVE LINE! ESPECIALLY WHEN MR. PERRY MOST LIKELY WOULD HAVE BEEN THERE WHEN OUR SECOND OR EVEN THIRD PICK CAME AROUND!!! IT WAS A BLATANT REACH WHEN REACHING REALLY WASN'T NEEDED!! MIKE BROWN'S FINGERPRINTS ARE ALL OVER THAT MOVE!That's why. I still remember the television draft analysts just kind of stopping and silently looked at each other, blinking for a brief second after the Bengals pick was announced, as if to say "Okay...nobody saw that coming!", then immediately jumped into the giving us the basics of Perry's stats at Michigan, because they could offer no real insight into the strategy (or lack of such) of that draft selection! As far as biggest impact ON the field...I agree with membengal:Clearly Madieu has been the MVP rookie for 1st half of season. Yeah, I remember that one quite clearly.....you and chriscovga were vexed, and that's a understatement. You were ready to call for Coach Lewis' head, call the season a wash, and give the entire draft an F, all in one fell swoop.

I'm sorry, but nobody can convince me that Perry was truly Marvin Lewis's #1 pick for last years draft. I don't care what he said afterwards, he's just playin' the part of a head coach. That selection was by Mike Brown's direct order, and you know it!

Yup. Gotta wonder why there.I'm all for ML stacking the team w/ his picks on D, be it draft or young waiver wire guys like Wilkins or undrafted rookies like Stevens.Who knows how long ML will be around? Let him load up and build the D up for the future. The foundation for the O is there now.

Now, you know, billy, that if Perry turns out to be a stud some snarky board member (like, for example, me ) will find this post and put it in a thread titled "billybroom declares Mike Brown a football genius"! As to whether or not we really could have improved out d-line by taking a DT or DE in the first two rounds, it's tough to say. Tommie Harris is having a decent rookie campaign in Chicago, but we wouldn't have been able to get him even if we'd stayed at 17. Will Smith and Kenechi Udeze's numbers are only slightly better than Jumpy Jr.'s. Vince Wilfork has done a nice job at NT for the Pats -- but again his numbers aren't much higher than Langston Moore's right now. Igor Olshansky got shifted from DT to DE and has been a good player in SD, but through 9 games (the latest stat update on nfl.com) he had one fewer sack than Geathers. Terry Johnson had 4 tackles and half a sack for the Bears, and Dwan Edwards a whole 1 tackle with the Ravens (I think that puts Askew a half a tackle behind him!).That isn't to say that some of these guys won't turn out to be better players in the long run. Undoubtedly some will, and undoubtedly some will go the way of Dan Wilkinson and Reinard Wilson. But it seems unlikely that drafting any of these guys would have provided any "solid help" for the d-line this year. And the fact that we have fourth- and sixth-round picks whose play is comparable to first- and second-rounders has got to earn a little respect for Marvin & Co.'s talent evaluation abilities. Even if you still don't agree with who they picked (Perry), at this point it's tough to fault them for passing over the alleged top defensive prospects last April. FlavorMaker
Excellent points Jersey. Great post! I've come to find out though that people around here don't really let facts get in the way of their infinite wisdom though, so I'm sure somebody will still try and shoot ya down. skyline
Great post, Joisey. Also, keep in mind that Askew was considered first round talent, just coming out a year too early. Talent-wise, though, he has the potential to be as good as any of the guys they passed up on in the first round.

Absolutely Next Big Flavor.Only prob is the pick #. At 17, there's a good chance all 4 are gone. Plus Miller's a JR. Not a certainty that he even declares. It'd be hard to pass on any of them but Warrick will likely be back w/ contract in tact. So TE seems more of a Day 1 priority anyway. It's just getting harder to see any logic in not turning ML loose w/ the picks on D. Madieu and Ratliff are lookin like this year's Eugene Wilson and Asante Samuel. Geathers and Landon look like immediate keepers and Askew and Caleb may have something in future. In Marvin We Trust. Joisey's pt. is well heeded. Last year's DT crop looks like it should turn out better than this year's will. Even after Round 2, there was still Darnell Dockett, Randy Starks, Donnell Washington, Tim Anderson, etc...And yet ML didn't go DT. Obviously, ML was not banned by Mikey from picking DT before Askew.Still, Perry pick smells.

TheBZ
You hate to see draft picks get picked off like that...Because it depletes your long-term development. Thankfully, we've had more picks than rounds in the last two years.However...it is a very good sign that the roster competition is leaving decent rookies on the practice squad.Basically...It's a testament to how other team are viewing Marvin Lewis and his support staff as talent evaluators. Could they be looking at Madieu, Landon, Geathers, etc. and thinking..."What else has he got stashed away on his practice roster?"Here's hoping tha Marvin is able to turn up another solid player to fill that spot.BZPS. I wonder if there's any way to get in on coaching the college North-South game every year?? That seemed to play a big role in identifying Madieu, etc.
