AGrizzlyBaer
he said he talked with a sports agent and the agent said that sean alexander would want to come here next year. just thought that was intruiging and a convo starter

The_Next_Big_Thing
His Shaun Alexander Family Foundation, a charity group that provides food and gifts to people who can't afford Christmas, scholarships, and supports youth baseball leagues in the inner city is based in Florence. His family still lives in the Northern Kentucky area, and I'm sure he would love to SAY he'd like to come to Cincinnati. But lets face it, unless we discard Rudi, he isn't going to be in stripes, and he will fetch a much higher price than Rudi too.I'd love to see him here, but the chances are pretty slim considering we need to concentrate on the damned defense in the off season. BengalsOwn
Rudi isn't going to be resigned. I'd rather sign Alexander than re-sign Rudi any day.
Kirkendall
I'd give up nearly anyone for Alexander. I think he's the type of player that defines a team; i.e. Holmes, Ma-shal, etc. What a perfect combination, eh? Carson, Alexander? We'd go undefeated as early as 2005! WHO DEY AGAIN?
It will never happen but it would be great to see. I like Rudi but he's no Alexander. Not even close. The sad thing is I think Shaun would take less money to come here and he would actually want to be here. That would be a change of pace!Too bad they blew a first round pick on Perry. Man that pick still pisses me off and makes a move for one of the best RBs in the game unlikely.
BengalszoneBilly
Alexander in stripes? Just seems like one of those "too good to be true" situations. Kinda like Griffey Jr. with the Reds, and although he DID come to Cincy, it never seemed to pay off.

I'm excited at the idea of Alexander in stripes but frightened at the thought of it as well. If he has a bad game, will fans turn against him like they turned against Griffey? Like they are turning against Chad Johnson for one bad game?
Phatness
One of two things will happen next year....1. we resign Rudi for a reasonable $$, because his year hasn't been the best and I still believe he is a solid back.2. we let Rudi go and sign a Cedric Benson type RB in the draft....We don't have the cap to bring in players like Alexander without cutting alot of dead weight ie.....Warrick, and unfortunately we don't have the depth to cut these guys at this point...
27atwater
Cutting those guys will allow the team to add depth either through the draft or via free agency. If they trade Warrick, they may take a hit, but it will be far less than what they are paying him over time. I'm sure a bunch of teams would give up some picks for him. To make an omelette, ya have to break a few eggs. SEE: Deltha O'Neal. Didn't earn his $$ in Denver so they shipped him. I hope he is doing well in Cincy, but Denver had to get him off of the books. Like they are turning against Chad Johnson for one bad game? Griffey's problem is an injury deal, not poor performance. It's unfortunate, but has absolutely no correlation with Alexander. We can't just assume he'll get hurt when coming to Cincinnati therefore not sign him -- if possible -- because of bad Cincy luck, which does seem to be bad lately though.. 2. we let Rudi go and sign a Cedric Benson type RB in the draft....Why get another back in the draft when we have Perry and a good "3rd down back" in Watson? We should get one offensive player in the draft; a center. We don't have the cap to bring in players like Alexander without cutting alot of dead weight ie.....Warrick, and unfortunately we don't have the depth to cut these guys at this point...Don't forget about the players that we are still paying against the cap, such as Akili Smith. We'll have some money freed up once the dead-weight players that have been cut aren't absorbing our $$$. And not signing Rudi will free up even more $$$. Griffey has a lot of baggage because of his name and the accomplishments of his father. I know there are some people in town who don't even know that Shawn is from the area. I doubt the pressure would be as great for SA as it is for Jr. here. And as far as the Chad-bashing, he has had one great catch (vs. Jets) and a couple of other nice catches (vs. Miami or Baltimore?) but there were some drops sprinkled in every game thus far. He has not been able to shake the double coverage and shouldn't do stupid things to upset your opponents. Hopefully he can step it up and keep his mouth shut. If those things happen then people won't be so quick to turn on him. Welcome to life as a professional athlete.

If we sign ANY high profile free agent they are going to have the same problem Griffey has. Any high profile free agent comes with expectations that they will save the franchise. Look at the way everyone crapped out on Herring and Webster, and they aren't nearly as high profile as Alexander. Until Cincinnati fans start having some damned patience, no high profile guy is going to come here.As for Chad, the way people turned on him is exactly why free agents don't come. TippCityRick
OK, even though I'm depressed from Sunday's game and haven't been able to post this week due to this malady, I must respond. The chances of Rudi being back next year are slim. He's simply not fast enough to be a featured back in the NFL and he wants to be paid as one. Say goodbye to him while you can.Alexander saying he would like to play here is great and if he were to do so for a home team discount then the Bengals can afford to take a look. But the major area of concern on this team is Dline and Oline. The Bengals will have significant dollars to spend in FA this offseason. Both Dillon and Smith come off the books (along with Gibson and I believe one other source of dead money). They must shore up the Dline due to it's lack of production this year and the fact that Tony Williams will be gone (last year of contract and he's not a "Marvin" guy). Two vetern Dlineman additions would be nice. It would also be good for them to find a center and a versital backup that they can plugin on the line. Jones will be ok after he recovers from whatever is ailing him this year (and he is ailing). Anderson and Steinbach will be fine, but I think an upgrade over Bobbie Williams may be sought to get better pass protection.Anyway, the only way Alexander becomes a home town hero is if he comes at a discount. Due to other positional concerns they can't afford him at full price.(btw, isn't it depressing to be talking FA and draft so early . . . man, I feel like Eeyore). belmontbengal
We will be higher than alot of those mock drafts have us. I saw one that had us at 17! Heheh...more like 4 or 5 at the rate we are going. sigh.Anyways, I started a thread on scouting the prospects that would work for cincy in the draft forum.Oh, and Rick, you are so right it isn't even funny. Agree with you 100%. Must be because I grew up in Tipp City, eh? Go Red Devils! belmontbengal
I guess we'll agree to disagree on that point then, big thing. As for the 17th pick slot you have to admit that is looking pretty ludicrous at this point...anyways...I thought I had some thought -provoking commentary in my previous post in this thread..cmon people! BengalsOwn
We should get a WR with our #1 pick, and sign Alexander. With Warrick's injury, I feel it would be best to get another (potential) great wide receiver, such as Mike Williams. Having Williams and Johnson as receivers will open up the running game significantly, and with Alexander back there he could run for 1600+ yards! Also, I beleive we will have about $10 million in cap room to work with after this season. We can afford to sign Alexander and 1 dominant d-linemen.
