Early Injury Report

Some injury notes from Hobson up on the site. Around the division, he notes that Heap is out for the Ravens next week, Maddox won't be back in time for the game the week after (so we get Cheesligsburger), and Winslow may not make it back in time for either game with Cincy. Ouch.

Meanwhile, Herring and Beckett both begin the week doubtful for Sunday. Same for Larry Moore. Braham looks to be another game-time decision, so Fontenot could go again. TJ banged up his shoulder but is expected to play. Powell has some mystery injury and Lewis wouldn't say whether he'll play or not.

After a hard-knocking game like that, I'm sure a lot of players are a little sore...

Fontenot was impressive, considering what little time he had to work with the rest of the offensive line. Who would have expected such a performance under these circumstances? A veterans experience paid off here!

No knock to Nate or Deltha, both of whom had good games, but I think you can make a case that, so far, Jerry's been our best FA acquisition! If we can get Richie healthy we will have a solid duo at center who can spell each other and thus stay fresh all season long, and Moore can concentrate on getting healthy and backing up Steinbach.

Yea, did you see the new-fond respect between he and Willie? They were talking about how to stop a blitzing Seau on the final minutes of the game. Cohesiveness is so important to the offensive line.

Nothing like a hard-fought win to bring a team together. I'm sure Jerry still has a lot about the Bengals' system to learn, but no one on this team is going to think twice about the C spot now. Richie, Jerry, who cares, we're good.

What's up with Kelly Washington? Why isn't he playing?

I think he's been on the field a couple times in 4 WR sets but hasn't been thrown to. At this point he's the No. 4 WR and has to beat out TJ to get more playing time, and TJ's done a good job so far this year.

Here's an update on injuries: (from Bengals.com)

Look for the same tandem of safeties to start for the Bengals with rookie Madieu Williams and veteran Kevin Kaesviharn getting the call against the Ravens this Sunday.

Head coach Marvin Lewis said Kim Herring (foot) is out, as is defensive lineman Carl Powell after arthroscopic knee surgery.

Safety Rogers Beckett (head) is listed as doubtful, as are rookie backups Caleb Miller (ankle) at linebacker and Stacy Andrews at right tackle, and center Larry Moore (knee).

Rich Braham (knee) could return to center, but is listed as questionable.

Wide receiver Peter Warrick (knee, shin) and defensive end Robert Geathers (ankle) are probable.

Backup rookie defensive tackle Matthias Askew is out for the second straight game as he recovers from arthroscopic knee surgery.

With Powell out, the DT rotation load is left up to Langston Moore.

Since there's no bonafide DT on the practice squad, does ML try to stop Jamal w/ just 3 DTs, shift Clemons inside and roll the dice with Jumpy Jr. on the end, or pick-up a DT like, say, someone who had played in 80 straight Bengals games before getting cut this year?

Yeah, I thought about Steele, too, but it doesn't appear the Bengals are going to make the call. I think Moore will be OK but you know they're going to run Jamal at Jumpy Jr. the minute he hits the field. The LBs are going to have to step up, up, up this game.

They could shift to a 3-4 defense and let the MLB's add some punch to the line....

This sounds like the punch line to a sick puppy joke

Some 3-4 fronts do make a lot of sense for this game out of necessity or not.

Justin as an inside backer would be a sight to see. Dude's got the speed and strength for it. Let him spy Jamal the whole game and turn him loose. He'd probably get 20 tackles.

Maybe moving Clemons inside some was the plan to begin with Geathers in.

At the very least, Powell at DT could run stunts w/ the DE but Moore is too slow to do anything but bullrush.

Fontenot has now had another Week to pick up on The Bengals system.

The OL is in the best shape that it has been in so far this season and it will Show in their Play on Sunday.....

From what I have seen of Langston Moore he will hold his own in the rotation....

Teams have been putting 8 and 9 men in the box to stop the Ravens running game.

Maybe we could run something that would look like a 3-5 on some downs ?

There's been some speculation the Bengals may run a 4-4...but I think they'd be more likely to stick with a 4-3 and just bring up a safety as per usual. Another suggestion has been to put Hardy at DE on passing downs...

Well they played the 4-4 against them the first game last year, and the Browns copied that and played the 4-4 for the first game. Simply put we do not have the type of DT that it would take to run a 3 anything front.

I agree. My bet is that with Patterson being brought up, we'll see Clemons in the "Powell" role, playing alternately at end and tackle.

3-4 or 5 would be a trip but too risky vs. Jamal and an O-line this large. Still, I'd like to see Justin play off the line for a whole game just 1 time ^_^

The 4-4 sounds like it, but I'd like to see more of the  Silent Assassin  than Madieu or K2, who both hit but not like a true SS like Beckett. The secondary should handily handle the Ravens WRs w/ 2 CBs and a free safety, which looks like a green light for an all day blitz fest.
