slowtwitch
Over the years I've watched with annoyance that the Bengals cornerbacks almost never seem to jam the opposing receivers at the line of scrimmage. The commentators in last weeks game were critical of this fact as well. I used wonder why Dick Lebeau, an all-pro corner never utilized this technique and why Marvin isn't doing this now. If d-line can't pressure the quarterback, the receivers pass routes need to be disrupted, even momentarily....it seems. Plus, the cb's can't break up a pass or intercept the ball when their always playing 5 yards behind the receivers. just my pet peeve I guess... Kirkendall
Good question. Perhaps the CBs don't have the physical ability to hold their own or the safties aren't quick enough to help cover. Plus, it may have something to do with the "enforcement" of the DB rule too.. who knows. That's one pissed off looking dog though..

HoosierCat
I hated the 10-yard cushion our corners always seemed to give myself, but given the quality of our DBs, I can't say I blame them. Problem was we just got killed in small increments then, versus one big play.IIRC, they did play more aggressive coverage last year than usual, and I expect them to be up on the line more often this year. We just need the talent to play man coverage. So let's all keep our fingers crossed re one Deltha O'Neal.

I don't know about Tory James--but you would think that since Deltha was a Punt Returner (which is supposed to mean that he has a little speed)--that Deltha could play a receiver with little or no cushion and jam at the line. I always wondered the same thing about Artrell, since his speed was his biggest asset. This is a very good question. However, I'm thinking that the Defensive Coordinators knew that the Pass Rush was for s**t--so they would play more of a Defensive approach and not give up the big play. Thus getting nickel and dimed (even 15-yarded) to death. However, I'm more concerned about the RUN DEFENSE giving up 200+ total yards to a Jurassic Period-old Running Back than the Pass Defense. The RUN DEFENSE concerns me the most. Then again--I think someone mentioned on this board once (I think it was Kirk)--that if your defense has a great pass rush--then it also makes your secondary great. So, once again we are focused on the front 4 not getting enough heat on the passer. The front 4 is also possible with taking up blockers and not getting blown off the line of scrimmage in the RUN DEFENSE as well. So, WHY WASN'T THE BUNGLES' FRONT OFFICE MORE CONCERNED WITH THE DEFENSIVE TACKLE POSITION IN THE OFF SEASON IS BEYOND ME.In fact, it f**king pisses me off. So, once again--THANKS MIKEY F. BROWN.

So, once again--THANKS MIKEY F. BROWN. They were VERY concerned with it in the off-season. That's why they went after Sapp and Gardner. I think they could have gotten Sapp, but backed off thinking that they could get Gardner for a good price. The injury situation backfired on them, but that certainly doesn't mean the front office wasn't concerned with the position. It means their plans fell through. It happens sometimes, you know?
volcom69
i just want to see some sacks this weekend. and for yards they can give up some yards i just dont want to see touchdowns thats what hurts the yards dont hurt if they cant score touchdowns like last week if they wouldnt let them score that many touchdowns they would of won the game. look at the eagles how many yards they let up just not the touchdowns and they win. As I said in another thread, it's a wonder that Marvin hasn't suffered a serious head injury due to banging his skull into a wall every time one of his defensive moves backfired this past offseason. If the D doesn't improve this year, it wasn't for a lack of trying...
ShulaSteakhouse
O'Neal is one of the fastest players in the NFL, 4.3 speed.
schweinhart
ONeal will handle speed WRs step-for-step.He'll be challenged by possession WRs when he gets stuck covering them because he's not a physical CB.Still, the ONeal pick-up should reap the ML genius dividends starting Sunday night. And I still say that you guys are over-pricing O'Neil. He got BENCHED while in Denver because he was proving that he was a bustola. He also got benched from being a Punt Returner!!! With his speed, you would think that he would be perfect for that job!!!I hope his "new start" proves that his Pro Bowl year wasn't a fluke. schweinhart
Here's to hoping. Should start finding out what ONeal can do in about 90 minutes.A lot is riding on him being able to cover in man until the DLine can get to the QB.Just like last week w/ Madieu. He has some potential, but when has Mike "I cheated to win two superbowls" Shanahan ever developed a defensive player? Maybe with some coaching We'll found out Deltha ain't broke....I ain't holing my breath but he is definately a improvement from what we've had at the corner for the last few years. Hey man, I totally agree with you there. However, I think if you dig up my rigor mortis'd great grandma and place her at Cornerback, then that would have been an improvement.
