walzav29
I'm not saying he'll make us a top 10 defense, but after watching the game of the week last night (Jets/Bengals) you could see how many times Caleb looked slow to react. Common rookie stuff. Considering there are new guys on defense it will help that Simmons knows where everyone should be lined up and where they should go. TippCityRick
He sounds good to go. I agree, he will make a big difference. I'm a bit concerned with Williams starting at safety if Beckett can't go. If Beckett can't go the Bengals will only have two safeties available. Scottishbengal
you can only go with what you've got available
TippCityRick
No doubt there, but with only two safeties available, what do they do if one goes down? Any chance on getting . . . oh jeez, what's his name? The kid they cut from Florida. If Beckett can't go he would at least know the defenses and get them lined up right. I'm concerned with Williams missing assignments since he hasn't played the position since early preseason.Help me out . . . I'm at a total loss for his name. walzav29
Marquez Manuel. Losing Herring will be a big deal, but I think safety will be a little easier for a rook than corner. I just hope Deltha isn't as bad as Denver felt he was. It seems we're putting alot of faith in him. Now that our offense is set, I can't wait to have a whip-ass D. TippCityRick
Thank you. I could see his face but couldn't come up with the name. And I agree that safety is a better transition than corner and I do think that Beckett will be able to go, but there are still assignment issues that Williams will have to be sure of or they could get burned deep. HoosierCat
I'm concerned with Williams missing assignments since he hasn't played the position since early preseason. It's always a concern, but even vets screw up assignments sometimes (for example, when MW got burned for a TD Sunday he was supposed to have help...). And I'm far more confident having him at safety since that's where he spent most of his time in college.Look for a lot of K2 at safety if Beckett can't go. Lots of Bengals fans like to dump on him, but I think he's a solid if unspectacular player. It'll be his job to keep MW on his toes.
TippCityRick
If Beckett can go I believe we'll see he and K2 at safety with MW to spell.
BengalszoneBilly
Now that our offense is set, I can't wait to have a whip-ass D. Me either, but I wouldn't recommend holding your breath until it manifests itself. IMO, too many question marks exist with both the ability of the defensive players and the leadership of their coaching staff.
LABengalsFan09
TippCity,Marquand Manuel, is the safety you're referring to, and no the Bengals can not claim him since he is with the Seahawks...
Kirkendall
It's always a concern, but even vets screw up assignments sometimes (for example, when MW got burned for a TD Sunday he was supposed to have help...). JC, I wondered the same thing too when it happened. But it looked like the Bengals ran a 3 deep zone with Beckett in the middle. Because he had every intention on getting the guy that ran though his zone and zero intentions of helping which of course would be a Fraiser mistake because you don't want to have an ill-experienced rookie corner on the island by himself when the defense clearly struggled on all aspects.... I don't know if it was a missed assignment, mis-read, or bad call from Frasier (or just a good read by Pennington). Of course, I only saw the replays shown on TV and that's about it so it's not by any means a thorough analysis. Either way, you're correct, the vets all made big mistakes on defense.. Let's just hope they learned from those mistakes last week, and we see at least some measure of improvement from the "D" come Sunday night! :player:

Having Simmons and Deltha back will help. Combine that with the ass-whoopin' I'm sure ML/Frazier laid on the D during practice this week, and the fact that it's our first home game, I look for great improvement Sun. night. Not that it's going to be permanent by any means, but as we learned from the Pats game, even a mediocre D can look great if the situation is right. Call me a homer, but for some reason, I think we'll look like champs Sun. night on both sides of the ball...just a gut feeling.
Barbarian
I think you have to get better with the 4 up front for everyone else to improve!!! It's pretty obvious that the 4 D-Linemen were getting blown off the ball last Sunday. And what's scary about that--is that the Jets O-line isn't even THAT GOOD!!! Just wait until they go up against some O-line like the Broncos!!!One word for that: YIKES!!!!

It's one of the most underrated in the league, and I've heard quite a few people saying it's easily in the top 5, and probably close to the top. I don't think the fins offense has much respect for our D (not that they should), and they'll be looking for a relatively easy night. I just see our guys playing some inspired ball in front of a home crowd.
BengalszoneBilly
inspired This is the operative word for the "D"! With it, we win. Without it...well you saw the Jets game, didn't you? 'Nuff said.
Kirkendall
I'm perhaps more excited about this game than opening day. I mean, national game, PBS under the lights! This may be the biggest game in NFL history.. ok, maybe not, but I'm fired up nontheless.

'Nuff said.Yep. And if playing in front of 65,000 of your own fans on national tv after having ML's foot up your ass all week because you played like a high school team (or the Browns) the week before isn't inspiration enough, it's going to be a long ugly season for all of us. Was that a run-on sentence?
