Sox
Found this earlier. It will be interesting to watch Palmer read defenses now that they will no longer be "vanilla".http://www.newsday.com/sports/football/jet...l=ny-jets-print
membengal
They should def try and bring it, but their injuries in the defensive backfield may leave them somewhat vulnerable too...From the same article:"Other injuries: FS Jon McGraw (doubtful, groin), Evans (questionable, back), CB Donnie Abraham (probable, knee), KR Jonathan Carter (probable, ankle), FB B.J. Askew (probable, shoulder), LB Darrell McClover (probable, ankle) and DE Bryan Thomas (probable, hamstring). If McGraw can't play, rookie Erik Coleman will move to free safety and Reggie Tongue will start at strong safety."

BengalsMan3203
If our O-Line and Backs can pick up the blitz packages then look out. We all know Carson can throw the ball. If everything is picked up good then he'll have a big game.

If everything is picked up good then he'll have a big game. I doubt they will pick up ALL of them. I just hope they improve from the number they picked up in the Atlanta game. The looked more like ticket takers letting concert goers through a turnstile than blitz defenders!
Sox
I have no doubt they'll test Palmer. But with their starting nickel out(Mickens)and a starting safety out(McGraw) there should be an opportunity to burn them deep if they do blitz.I'll bet we see more than a few three receiver sets from the bengals O to try and exploit this. HoosierCat
No surprise here. Blitz the new guy is SOP. Good time to run some delayed handoffs or little swing passes to Rudi or Perry.I don't care what anyone says, it's going to come down to Rudi v. Curtis Martin. Palmer's new and Pennington hasn't had any time to speak of this year with 2 of his top 3 wideouts, Moss and Chrebet. Both teams will be looking to run the ball first. With us still having so much trouble stopping the run and being 3 and 7 @ the Jets, this is exactly why I think we start the season 0 and 1. I hope no one farts in my general direction for saying so ...... or turns me into a newt either for that matter, cause I also think it'll get better the following week when we win at home. kevnz
A point people are missing from that article is the Jet's have to contain the run before they can get blitz happy....Do you think Rudi is just gonna vanish? his first start on opening day, he's gonna be pumped....Rudi will keep the defense honest. I don't see the Jet's stopping Rudi, AND blitzing the crap out of Palmer...If the do blitz a lot do you think that maybe, just maybe Rudi get's a big run, or Chad/Washington/Warrick catchs a ball and runs it in? Does anyone think Palmer is afraid of the blitz? Besides if they are blitzing heavily that means that it's a better than average chance that Chad is gonna be in single coverage, and sorry, the Jet's don't have any DB that is gonna beat Chad one on one. The Bengals are going to see many different looks out of the Jets Front Defensive 7. Switching back and forth between a 3-4 and a 4-3. John Abraham (94) will switch back and forth between a Down Lineman and a Linebacker. Henderson even has schemes where Abraham drops into coverage. In our first preseason game Henderson open the game using a dime package for the first two plays. In that alignment he dumped his three starting LBs (Hobson, Cowart and Barton) and put in rookie Jonathan Vilma and 2 DBs.As to blitzing there are a number of creative ways to Run Blitz. Stunt Lineman and shoot the gap with a backer is one way. Braham is coming off knee surgery and Steinbach as a bad elbow. That means the interior of your line should be soft. If Rudi Johnson can be forced to take it wide it may be a long afternoon for the Bengals. The Jets have upgraded their LB corp. The key will be first down for you guys. If you get positive yardage, like at least 3 yards, you will keep the heat off Palmer
redsfan2
I'm not worried about Palmer getting panicked and trying left handed shovel passes or anything of the sort. I think he'll do well enough, .... and first day games can always go either way. I'm basing my pick on our history of last year. We didn't play well on the road. We haven't done well with the Jets ( particularly on the road ) ,,,, and so far in pre season we're still having trouble stopping the run. Now admittedly all of that was based on last year and this pre season so it may mean nothing, but you have to admit that it doesn't bode well for a good plane ride home. NOFX
I'm worried about Cincy, as a Jet fan. McGraw and Mickens (and possibly Chrebet) being out is a HUGE concern.
85inthehall
as for the injuries the one that hurts is mickens -- mcgraw is always hurt and we bring in an established veteran and sure tackler in tongue -- of the rest if the D only Evans is a main player on the D line.I am excited about this new Jets D -- compared to the last 2 years this D looks super fast, solid tacklers, and very aggressive
Jam31
Donnie Henderson will be a great-coordinator. He'll have those guys attacking. Im not saying the Jets linebackers will make enough tackles....but at least they got younger and quicker.
chrishcovga
This posting is absolutely hilarious..!!- I'm just wondering if anyone here maybe contemplated this thought.....* ready...- Considering the fact that his HEAD COACH is one of the more influential defensive minds in the NFL, perhaps he's already spent a great deal of time blitzing Carson in Practice to prepare him for it..?????????????????????????????- I mean , I'm no Rocket Science, but when I watched the Falcons game i didn't see a Quarterback that was hurried in his throws, I saw a quarterback that couldn't find his timing and was behind a half step on most of them. - A hurried Quarterback over throws his receivers, or leads them too far. A quarterback fighting his timing with backup widereceivers starting from all of the injuries we sustained before the Falcons game , throws behind them! - And the Pick - Carson threw was Chad Johnsons' fault. - Watch the game film and you'll see Carson was throwing to a spot and CJ rounded off his route! schweinhart
All good pts.I just hope that the Bengals don't settle too conservative to start. I'd much rather see the 1st 2 plays scripted to run play-action w/ the single-back RB dive/WR reverse faked with 3 WR route options and an RB checkdown. If it's Chad deep, Washington on a slant, or Warrick through off the reverse for an opposite field out, fine.Follow this w/ the five-receiver set they opened up with in Indy and the Jets D will have to play into the O hands. The Bengals can always run afterwards.
