State of the Bengals

I've not heard or read many great things about this Center group, but Weston Richburg jumps out as one to watch after the first round.

Thing is, i'm not convinced the Bengals see the need to draft a replacement for Cook (whom they seem to love).

I hope to see Still get over his injuries to prove himself. If not, and with Peko coming due next year, DT could jump up there.

Aaron Donald is getting compared to Atkins now. Projected as a later 1st rounder, I think.

I've seen him going anywhere from top 15 to the end of the first.

I know people want to call him the next Geno Atkins, but I think teams may still be wondering about his size.

Geno is over 300lbs and I think Donald weighed in around 285 lbs and I don't think it's so easy to just label someone as, "The next Geno".

Players like him aren't the norm, but if we talk about pairing the two, that could be interesting.

For as little as they seem to do it, is anyone thinking this might be the draft we see them make a trade to move up ??

I recall last year they seemed to really like Eric Reid and saw that had he been on the board, that he would have been the pick.

With that being said, could anyone envision them making a move to get a guy like Calvin Pryor ??

I think it might only take 3-4 spots to make that happen.

I was just thinking about the safety position and how almost everyone will be coming due in the next two seasons.

There are other positions they could target in the first that have players coming due as well, but safety just stuck in my mind.

They might be reading what I'm reading - deepest draft by far in years. Potential starters in the 4th round. That depth may work against moving up. Plus the Bengals seem to not want to move up anymore, their strategy is find the diamond in the rough, not pay to get into the jewelry store.

Interesting question. Hobson passed a comment in an article the other day to the effect that, buzz was that there weren't enough first-round-quality players to make it to 24. In other words, the draft may be deep, but it's also viewed as thin at the top. So, if you're going to get the same caliber guy at 24 as, say, 44, that makes a good argument for trading down. Of course, in that case there will probably be a lot of teams looking to trade down, so finding a partner could be difficult.

In the case of moving up, their prospects are limited unless they cough up a lot of picks, and they've never been a team to do that. Packaging their first and second would allow them to move up 8-9 spots. Their first and third would get them to about 18 and their first and fourth to maybe 21. If they put all four of their first picks together and then threw in a late-round sweetener they have the ammo to get to 10.

I could see them trading up a few spots, say somewhere between 18-22, if a player like Dennard or Gilbert slips. But my gut says they sit tight and take BPA.

Yeah, I was just kicking around the thought as most do around this time of the year.

I'm still left to wonder if both Gilbert and Dennard will be there at #24. I'm skeptical.

Giving up a 4th to move up a few spots would be of VERY little concern for me if they truly liked a particular player.

It's why I brought up a guy like Pryor, who is thought to go a few spots before #24.

Again, just chatting it up.

Good write-up today from the Sports on Earth guys:

Nice write up indeed.

I'm still hoping against hope that Dennard falls, but even if he does, it wouldn't surprise me to see a team (Chargers) leapfrog us to grab him.

In regards to Vance, I went back to look at his coaching history as a DB coach with the 49er's and Texans.

In all of that time, he was only given a CB drafted above the 6th round twice (a 2nd and 4th) and still did well with what he was given.

One of the highest drafted players during his time with the 49er's was Taylor Mays. Wonder how much of an impact that makes with him as a FA ??

Anyway, i'm really curious what will happen with him back there when given a possible first rounder to mold along with Kirkpatrick ??
