FlavorMaker
Good news.....Finishing touches being put on $7M contract for first-round pick By Mark CurnutteEnquirer staff writerThe Bengals are nearing a contract with first-round draft pick Chris Perry. The Enquirer learned Sunday night that the Bengals have made great progress in talks this weekend with the former Michigan running back. A source told the Enquirer that the Bengals and agent Eugene Parkers were fine-tuning language on a five-year contract that would pay Perry $7 million. The contract also contains $3 million in backside incentive and escalator clauses that could push its total value to $10 million. No information was immediately available on a signing bonus. Perry, the Bengals' first-round pick and 26th overall in the April draft, has missed the first nine days and 11 practices of the Bengals' training camp. He also missed the intrasqaud scrimmage and mock game, which were held over the weekend. Bengals spokesman Jack Brennan said Sunday night the club had no comment on Perry. Perry was believed to be in Cincinnati or Georgetown, Ky., undergoing a physical exam late Sunday. He would be the last of the team's 11 draft picks to sign. Perry is expected to be the top backup to starter Rudi Johnson at tailback. Kenny Watson has worked as the Bengals' No. 2 back in Perry's absence, and Watson rushed for 51 yards in the scrimmage. Bengals running backs coach Jim Anderson said at the draft that Perry, who is 6-feet, 224 pounds, would be the club's most versatile running back since James Brooks. Perry, 22, gained a Michigan-record 2,041 yards from scrimmage as a senior, 1,674 rushing and 367 receiving. He scored 20 touchdowns. --- E-mail mcurnutte@enquirer.com
Kirkendall
I just wish he'd sign and get into camp. I'm tired of this rookie dispute we are seeing more and more each year. But I don't believe it's Perry's fault, I think the agents cause 99% of these holdouts.
Scottishbengal
But I don't believe it's Perry's fault, I think the agents cause 99% of these holdouts. Too true - there should be a league standard 1 year contract for all draftee's. At least that way the rookies get drafted, get camped, get playing - and their agents then have a twelve month to sort out a bigger pay-day if their client has shown enough potential/proved themselves. Do what the NBA does -- that'll be the first and last time you hear me say that -- and force maximum contracts based on draft position. It's a standard and I believe they are forced to play through it for 3 seasons.
Barbarian
The Perry Deal is close???Sort of like how Warren Sapp, Bobby Taylor, Troy Vincent, Daryl Gardner, etc. were close???Yeah, okay--LIKE I'M GOING TO FALL FOR THIS s**t AGAIN!!!I'll believe it when I see it happen. Â Relax Barb, Perry will be in camp soon enough. How many plays are there to learn for third down? His biggest ajustment will be playing special teams. He probably hasn't done so in a long while. Â Just for the record, the Bengals never tried signing Bobby Taylor, his agent tried using them as leverage but no dice. Warren Sapp did us all a favor by signing with Oakland...He's not, nor has he ever been a run stuffing DT. Gardner never used the Bengals as leverage for a better deal, he was just damaged goods, and still could sign, but most likely not. And Vincent...again not a loss, and when he did sign elsewhere Marvin rebounded well by getting O'Neal.....

kevnz
can anyone tell me what happens if perry oh lets say decides to play for the fins how does something like that work It doesn't. Perry can't so much as say hi to the Dolphins....Fines, compensation draft picks....No other team has the right to sign him, much less talk to him. He could sit out a year and the Bengals would lose their rights to him and he'd go back into the draft pool.....But the Bengals could trade his rights before something like that happened. mtmeece
Thanks for the info Kevnz i thought it was something like that. the only reason i got to thinking about it was how badly the fins need some personel and how the bengals seem to like trading down and around in their drafting etc.

So they are paper thin at most every postition (Deadskins should take note) So the Dolphins have already given picks away for next year (at least a second rounder for Feeley, I'm not sure about anything else) so they don't have a lot of room to bargain, and cause there depth is so shallow they don't have any spare players to throw in as a sweetener...So they are pretty much screwed....But I don't think the Bengals are wanting to get rid of Perry, I'd heard a few months before the draft that the team had major wood for him, hence all the draft deals to get down to get him..... jditty47
From bengals.com 8-9-04, 7:45 p.m. PERRY OUT: The Bengals' deal with first-rounder Chris Perry apparently snagged Sunday night, meaning the former Michigan running back is going to miss Saturday's pre-season opener in Tampa Bay. It's unclear if the Bengals and agent Eugene Parker are starting from scratch, or if the five-year, $7 million deal is close enough on language on side issues that could involve escalators to get Perry into camp as early as Tuesday. No matter, head coach Marvin Lewis doubted he would play him if he showed Tuesday. Lewis did say he would play quarterback Carson Palmer into the second quarter against the Buccaneers, but not come back in the second half. kevnz
this is actually happening with nearly every 1st round pick that involved a trade....Hell, we are better off than the Chargers with a 4 pick that wants to get paid like a 1st pick, or the Browns and the pick they haven't gotten signed....There are still a good number of players that haven't signed yet, and you'd find that the common factor is the idiot agents....I'd also say that a hold up would be playing time incentives....Perrys agent would be trying to avoid them because he knows his client is sitting behind Rudi, perhaps for a while..... HoosierCat
The name of Perry/Parker's game is: hope Rudi gets hurt.Right now, they have zero leverage. With Rudi, Watson & Hicks, the Bengals don't need Perry immediately, and refusing to sign and going back into the draft next year isn't an option. Too much risk that he would be taken much lower. The only hope they have of pressuring the Bengals is an injury. Hicks doesn't help. Watson would give them some leverage, since it snatches away their best No. 2. If Rudi gets hurt, it's a whole new ball game. Watson would probably move to No. 1 to start with, but the Bengals would be looking to Perry ASAP.Like I said elsewhere, it wouldn't surprise me if he doesn't sign until the end of the month. WhoDeyNow
Lewis did say he would play quarterback Carson Palmer into the second quarter against the Buccaneers, but not come back in the second half. Why is Marvin starting Carson in the 2nd quarter? If anything, he should be starting the 1st quarter. That's what starters do--they start the game. chrishcovga
Perry opting to sit out the season and go back into next year's draft pool isn't even a possibility !!Why would by all accounts ( the 3rd best running back in the 2004 draft ) want to go up against the likes of 1. Cedric Benson..?2. Ronnie Brown..?3. Cadillac Williams..?4. T.A. McClendon..?- and a sh*t list of others...that'll be a high list to compete with..- Sorry won't happen, Holdout will probably be over before the Tampa Game, and we'll see him in action next week ! :player:

I sound like a jackass??? No, man--a jackass is being optimistic about the Bungles when they shouldn't be. The only guy that has a head on his shoulders about this situation is Joisey. He stated that:"It wouldn't surprise me if he doesn't sign until the end of the month."Yep. That's probably right. However, it would really be naive of fans not to believe that Perry may not sign until week 6 of the regular season. If that makes me a jackass, then so be it. Maybe you just can't handle it, James???
