I don't understand the TE signing at all

But I suppose this means, given that the fellow they signed is mainly a blocking TE, that they really wanted to re-sign Cochart after getting Cook onto the "will return" list. Said in simpler terms: they gambled and lost here.

Can't say as I really care at all about who our 4th TE is.

Just trying to think off the top of my head, even though i've seen the names, I can't remember who almost any of the practice squad players are, so I put the TE situation in that category. It's a move that will have almost zero impact on the entire season.

Gresham, Lee, and Charles are the top 3 TE's.

if Bengals thought that Charles could handle the 3rd TE spot, then they wouldn't have signed a 4th guy.

I think that Charles is 4th string and will be inactive for all 16 games.

How is this new guy better then Charles? He has 1 catch for 9 yards in the NFL.

Well, you need not look any further than the depth chart that has Charles as the #3 TE to answer that.

However, from what i've seen a few places, Quinn was actually brought in due to his blocking abilities and should Gresham go down or not make it back from his knee issue, he would fill that blocking TE role.

You simply can't compare Charles and Quinn, they are two different TE animals and the team views it that way.

If Gresham is healthy, Quinn is an afterthought.

With Gresham hurt, Charles had every opportunity to impress in camp and preseason. At least as regards blocking from the TE spot, he apparently didn't. That doesn't particularly worry me since there are lots of college TEs who need to be taught to block.

I doubt the Bengals would have drafted Charles if they thought he was such a developmental project, since Cochart was serviceable.

Keeping a 4th TE is a roster luxury that most teams can't afford. Keeping 4 TEs and 7 WRs sounds like a strain on the depth of the defense, which isn't particularly healthy to start with.

And even with him lacking in his ability to impress, he's still listed as the 3rd TE.

I really think that says it all.

In regards to blocking TE's, even Gresham needed much work in the blocking department and for those that forget, he was our first round pick that year. Charles' inability to block shouldn't be a surprise to anyone. I like the fact he will have almost a whole season to see how things go sitting behind Gresham and Lee. No one expecting him to start will work out nicely for him.

It's interesting to hear folks talking about how good Gresham's blocking is because that sure wasn't the case when he was drafted. It's a tribute to him that he's now got a reputation of hurting the team in the run game when he's out of the lineup.

My point exactly in my last post.

You can't judge how Charles is at blocking at this point in time and Gresham wasn't much better when drafted.

I am glad that he's worked that to a strength as well.
