Wharton, Maualuga, Dunlap Knee Injuries

Back on topic, Lapham has some more info.

Dunlap and Rey have no tears in their ligaments or cartilage. Just stretched them out. Dunlap may miss most of the remaining preseason games. It looks like Rey will play vs. the Facons Thursday night.

:sure:

Do we know for sure that;s really Lapham? If so, I feel very relieved.

Also, Nice comment from him about Boling.

Laps been loving on Boling all preseason saying he has had the best camp, and was pushing Wharton for playing time. I like Lap he always tells it like it is.

I don't know for certain but I've had no reason to doubt it. FWIW while Muckelroy was in the starting MLB spot for the walkthrough today, Rey was reportedly shadowing him the whole time. Maualuga didn't practice though. Interestingly, while Muck was the guy in walkthroughs, in actual practice Burfict was running with the first team D. Similar thing at safety: in walkthrough, Clements was the starter in place of Mays, but in practice Miles was first-team replacement.

Boling was starting at LG with the No. 1s. Collins took over with the 2s. Anderson continued to take Dunlap's place. (Dunlap not at practice today, either.)

Why throw Rey back in there day after tomorrow? What does that accomplish? Seems to me that both Muck and Burfict need the reps and quite frankly they have a big decision to make on those two. Throw in the fact that they still have two more preseason games left after this one to tune up Rey, I don't see any purpose served by playing him in the Falcon game

It sounded yesterday like Marvin was going to keep Rey out. I don't see much reason to rush him back, either. But given how low my expectations are for Maualuga, I really can't bring myself to care one way or the other.

I have to think that they'll only keep two MLBs. Anyone disagree with that? I did notice that both Muckelroy and Burfict were playing on STs

The Bengals typically keep 7 LBs (2 Will, 2 Mike, 2 Sam, and 1 ST specialist)

Vincent Rey has been the STs specialist the last two seasons. He's listed as the backup at Will on the current depth chart... but I don't think it's going to stay that way. Muckelroy can play all 3 LB spots, so if Burfict earns a roster spot at MLB, Muckelroy will steal Vincent Rey's spot at Will on the depth chart.

Additionally, Vincent Rey has typically not played at LB, but has been solely a ST specialist. If Burfict and Muckelroy are both contributing on STs, Rey is less necessary - which will allow them to keep Moch as a hybrid.

It's still early, but this is the way I see it playing out:

Will: Howard/Muckelroy

Mike: Maualuga/Bufict

Sam: Lawson/Skuta

Hybrid: Moch

Thank you for saying exactly what I would have responded with.

Couldn't agree with you more Derek.

I haven't seen Muckelroy playing any Will. Can he play that position or are you just plugging him there because it'll work out on paper?

The depth chart shows him as a MIKE:

Part of the love the coaching staff had when they drafted Muckelroy was the fact he is capable of playing ALL 3 LB positions.

I don't have it readily available, but remember that exact conversation when he was drafted.

I'm looking forward to seeing more of him in the preseason.

Will is generally your fastest LB. I don't think that's Muck's game

Well, here is what I know. Muckelroy played a lot of OLB in college, and his greatest strength is his ability in pass coverage. When he was drafted, the Bengals coaches talked about his ability to backup all three LB positions.

Meanwhile, the Bengals have plenty of experience and depth at MLB (Maualuga, Muckelroy, Burfict, Skuta), but Thomas Howard is the only true Will on the team. I just don't see Vincent Rey as the backup Will when the season starts.

So, yes, I am speculating - but that is what makes the most sense to me given the current roster make-up.

I hope they do figure out a way to keep both Muck and Burfict

Gresham with a sprained knee.

Yeah. Reedy commented that his sprain is not as bad as Dunlap's but worse than Maualuga's.

Just a guess, but we probably won't see him for the rest of the preseason - but he'll play on Monday night at Baltimore (I'm hoping that is true for Dunlap as well, but I won't be surprised if Dunlap misses the first game or 2).

Yea Dunlap seems to be a slow healer. Im hoping he will be ready for Baltimore but im not getting my hopes up.

I can't speak to how quickly he heals (although Zimmer seems to think of him as a guy who isn't willing to play through pain)... but knee injuries are tricky and he sprained it pretty badly.

They estimated that he would be back in 4 weeks - and if that is taken literally, it means that he will come back only three days before the week 1 game. I don't see him playing in that first game if he isn't cleared for practice until then.

When looking at what Gresham did on that play, it reminded me of when AJ got hurt last year in the Steelers game.

I would be really good if Gresham just takes it easy on the knee. He's going to be a huge part of the offense this year.

Dunlap ?? I really hope he gets better sooner rather than later.

I don't know how much to put in a player not willing to play through pain when it's the knee either.

Until Dunlap proves otherwise, he's a situational pass rusher who's to be used for only about 20 plays a game. If he bitches about that say prove us wrong

Not sure where you are getting that. Dunlap played in 12 games last year, and played 424 snaps - that's just over 35 snaps a game. And the coaching staff has talked about giving him a bigger role in the defense.

If he's healthy, I'd expect him to play 40+ snaps a game... although that's a big 'if'.

I'm getting that from the fact that he can't seem to stay healthy. It appears that he's fragile like a Ferrari. They have to limit the times they take him out of the garage. When he comes back this year, they'll have to start him off playing only on long third downs and late in the game where we have a lead. Only after he does well in those situations can they fathom using him more, hence my comment that he'll have to earn more playing time

As far as I'm concerned, I'm perfectly happy if all he does is abuse QBs 20-30 plays a game. That's a very valuable playmaker in my book
