HoosierCat
The latest from PFT.Bengals are 5th at $16.58 million. They've signed all their draft picks except Thompson, who won't cost much, and subtracting $5 million or so for an injury pad will probably be offset (at least) by cap gains after final cuts. So if they want to extend some guys, they've got enough for two, maybe three big extensions.
AGrizzlyBaer
It will be interesting if they try to do that now, or wait to try it next year when they have spend the cap space.
HoosierCat
I suspect the temptation will be to wait, since the Bengals really don't have any big-bucks guys hitting the market in March 2013. That said, it'd be nice to get a few guys nailed down early.
ShulaSteakhouse
The only 2 I'd really care about extending are Atkins and Dunlap...assuming Dunlap is actually working hard in the off-season on his strength/durability issues - if not I'd pass for another year or so on him. DC_Bengals_Fan
And I continue to feel like Bill Murray in Groundhog Day. Same BS, different calendar.
HoosierCat
And I continue to feel like Bill Murray in Groundhog Day. Same BS, different calendar. While the cap situation is worth watching, I don't get the same vibe. There's no Joseph/Houshmandzadeh/Smith-type scenario where the Bengals have a top-tier guy unsigned or set to hit FA next year and are sitting on a pile of money doing nothing. Waiting is, at this point, a reasonable option. The big chunk of space does haul their refusal to play in free agency's big leagues earlier this year into the limelight once again, but that's water under the bridge at this point. The wild card here is Marvin Lewis. Right now, he's in his final year as coach on the Bengals. If there's a new head coach in 2013, he might have some different ideas about the composition of the squad. In which case, the extra coin and lack of big in-house free agents could make for a very interesting first four months next year.

I posed the question to Reedy during one of his "20 questions" stints on twitter a few weeks back and he confirmed that the ball is still in Marvin's court.Theories abound as to why Marvin is apparently in no hurry to re-sign. The simplest explanation is that he wants more money than the FO is currently offering. Some think he's waiting for Mike to make good on promises he supposedly made to get Marvin to re-sign last year. (This assumes you think there were any, which I doubt; the bubble is a popular guess here.) Or Marvin could be hoping for a good year and another playoff run that would boost his value and get him a better deal -- or even a shot at a head coaching job someplace else. Or he may just be genuinely thinking it's time for a change. He has been at this for a decade now, after all.In the end my guess is that he will still be here in 2013. But if he isn't, I won't be surprised.
princeton
I think that the Bengals will play hungrier if there are no extensions. As it currently stands, a lot of these guys have a lot to prove, including extension candidates Andre Smith and Carlos Dunlap. Feed them, and they'll play lethargic. two exceptions: I'd extend Atkins, who doesn't really have a lot to prove as it is. Also, while I really don't want to extend Marvin, if it's going to happen then sooner is better than later. Some players lay down if they think the coach is a lame duck.
