Dangerous game to play

I'm of the opinion that letting guys you want to keep like Rucker, Fanene, and Nelson test the market is stupid. If I'm Nelson. I take an equal deal just out of the spite that the Bengals are trying to lowball him. If the plan is to build through the draft. Like Marvin has said. The key is keeping your guys. That's what Pittsburgh does.

Aye - I can see more gaps to fill if any of them walk, and it don't look like Free Agency will fill up any of those holes. Just hope the draft is A+++ and that previous draftee's are ready to go otherwise it's gonna be a long ol' season .........until late-october when we're out of contention. (ooooohh what a pesimist I am today)

Do you have any evidence that the Bengals are trying to lowball him?

I think the Bengals have shown themselves willing to pay appropriate money to their guys. But, when other teams are willing to overpay, then so be it...

Comes and goes I suppose. The issue I take is they saying guys are a priority to sign and then doing nothing before the player gets a chance to test free agency. While I can't prove anything myself it just screams of the player not being happy with what's been offered, if anything at all, to this point. That can be an indication of just not wanting to be here, but they did the smae thing with Fanene last season.

But they also re-signed several of their guys, didn't they? I'd have to look to be sure, and I'm too lazy to do so :P

It's just the nature of the NFL. Some guys love their team and are willing to re-sign. Others either care about nothing but money and want to get the most that they can get, or perhaps they ARE unhappy with their current situation. Can't please everyone.

This is true they can't, but with needing to resort to giving tickets away last year, they need to do something to get the fans back. Sitting tight with mediocre players they choose to call "key pieces" isn't going to get that done.

I'm in the sit and wait mode and calmed down a bit.

It's business as usual.

Who said the Bengals were placing such a high priority on Nelson, Rucker or Fanene? MB hasn't said anything. Marvin Lewis, in his last interview, said they would like to resign Nelson, but he sure didn't sound as if he was fired up about it. In fact, the lack of action in signing their own UFAs before free agency seems to suggest that there was no one guy they felt had to be locked up. Not saying I agree, but there you are. Even if they don't resign Nelson, I will look forward to see guys like Mays,Miles and Sands get a real opportunity at playing time.

Wouldn't resigning the likes of Fanene and Rucker be considered "sitting tight" with mediocre players? I agree that a big, splashy FA signing would help get fans fired up, but the Bengals have never gone that route. The Bucs have in the past two days. The Redskins always have. Although I would have liked the Bengals to sign Brandon Carr, the fact the Cowboys gave him 10 mil a year seemed a bit desperate. I think the biggest fault I can find with the Bengals' approach to free agency is that they keep their cards so close to the vest and don't say much of anything at all concerning their plans. The fans are basically left to wonder and too often assume that there is no plan at all. I think they do have one, but they aren't talking.

No, they have said all along that Nelson was their priority along with keeping the depth on the d-line. Numerous times actually.

While i'm not as mad about losing Fanene and Rucker, in the thoughts they were starters, they provided depth at a position that has been an issue for quite some time and were coming off solid seasons. They have filled the backup role well, but have been nicked up as well. If other teams view them as starters, that's their issue.

Mediocre players ??

Pac Man

Livings

Crocker

Geathers

This team needs a CB, Guard, Safety and RB badly. Geathers spot could be upgraded as well. They also better hope Michael Johnson can figure it out as well seeing as how he was benched for the guy they just let walk away. Still no talk about Pat Sims either.

At least we are still looking at TE's huh ??

Wait, what's that ?? That unknown TE went to the Bears ??

F*CK !!! NO WAY !!! NOW WHAT ARE WE GOING TO DO ??

Seriously, I think the Bengals can still make strides to improve this team through the draft, but if the injury bug hits, the depth will be a real weakness.

Haven't they learned that by now ??

Well, if you're looking for hope on Nelson, the fins just gave Marshall $16 million over 3 years, so that lessens the chance Coyle goes a-raiding.

Jets are still thought to be in the mix, though, and the Bengals have allegedly called Reggie twice since FA started and made no progress.

Resigning either Rucker OR Fanene would be the bare minimum when you have the most cap space and went 9-7 last year, and got spanked in the playoffs...again. The only plan I see is them waiting around for something to fall into their laps. They already don't have to pay Palmer's salary, now Fanene and Rucker's, nor Benson's, and didn't sign JJ last year. Even most of their pick-ups last year were one year deals. Brown has to be swimming in cash.

They seem much too content with the bad/below average players they have at this point. And we all know they aren't going to pay a LB, Guard, Center, or Safety anything already.
