Power Rankings

Who cares about power rankings? They don't really matter...

...but what else are we going to talk about?

ESPN has the Bengals at #30, up from #32.

CBS has the Bengals at #25 up from #32.

PFT has the Bengals at #26 up from #32.

Billick has the Bengals at #21, up from #31.

Wow... Billick kind of liked what he saw? He must have watched the game and everything.

Eh, it's like bad porn. You know what it's going to be but you look at it anyway. Post away.

Power rankings does one of two things, it either gives bulletin board material, or it can put a ton of pressure on you to not lose to a perceived lesser talented team. I'd rather be the underdog with nothing to lose, instead of a paper champion. If a high ranked team wins its "they only did what they were expected to do," whereas if they lose, "they must not have been as good as we thought they were, what a disappointment!"

  • 4 weeks later...

Bengals rank 12th in FO's DVOA rankings, just a hair behind Pittsburgh.

By looking at the rankings compared to the records, Houston must be the most UNDERachieving team in the NFL. There are several teams this year that are surprising along with the Bengals. You have the Bills, the Lions, and maybe most of all the 49ers, playing WELL above expectations.

PFT keeps bumping the Bengals up in their rankings.

Now #12... jumping 20 spots in 6 weeks. They also have them ranked 6th in the AFC (for those not good at math, PFT is essentially saying the Bengals are currently a playoff team).

If we ever see the day that PFT puts us ahead of the Steelers, then we'll know the world has come to an end.

Or we finally won a Super Bowl. These two events may happen simultaneously.
