Bengals - Panthers Pregame/Game Thread.

Newton looked pretty good in the couple of clips of him that I saw this weekend. I must admit I was a little surprised.

Interesting to see how well the team bounces back from the short week. What genius planned those two games within five days?

I am concerned about the drops that AJ Green had. He and Dalton have got to get on the same page.

And Dalton needs to be able to come into a game and make something good happen right away. No turnovers, no three-and-outs. At least sustain the opening drive a little beyond three plays.

The defense has to recognize where the TE is at on the field. This will be a problem all year regardless of how well the DBs play if the LBs can't cover. I thought that was why they didn't resign Dhani.

I'm still of the line of thought that Dalton will be able to make a greater impact when his receivers don't drop 6 balls that hit them in the hands, his o-line was worth a sh*t, and Benson (yes it was his fault) doesn't fumble the ball and put Dalton in a hole.

Either way around, I have school Thursday night, so I will have to play catch up on NFL Network.

Since the game is on Thursday may as well put this up now.

Per Reedy, the game is not going to sell out so it will be blacked out in Cincy.

Cam Newton is supposed to get the start for the Panthers.

It'll be on ch 12 locally. Since it won't sellout, it'll likely be on after the 11 o'clock news on Thursday night

Gruden seems to love Andy Dalton, and the way he handles himself in tough situations, and i do agree with that. He makes mistakes but he dosnt let that phase him which i like so far. Im just hoping he can start faster, he needs to learn come out with confidence!

As far as Green im not worried about him trust me he is one heck of a WR, once again i think he needs to get used to the speed of NFL CBs, and moving forward i think he will be ok. So im not going to worry about him, i think he will look pretty good.

At the start of the second quarter, Green dropped Dalton's pass but his cut left Revis tripping over himself. It was just like what Green did to Hall in the video from training camp. Made him look silly. Green will get over his rookie dropsies, that is what preseason is for.

Dalton's touch on the hard intermediate timing routes is about my only concern.

He seems to recognize the defenses well enough. He can move out of the pocket smoothly and keep looking downfield. He did not get discouraged when he started slow.

Here's to hoping they can rebound during the short week and keep improving.

Another thing I did like was Jason Shirley being aggressive and disruptive on the D-line. he's a massive, Shaun Rogers/Albert Haynesworth sized guy. If they can get him to figure it out, he's a monster waiting to happen.

I like Shirley also, and i really hope he makes this team. Did you notice he was in the backfield on almost every play, i dont know if he is in the right gap everytime, but he can blow guys up! Im rooting for him to make this team.

I've got an idea...let's move him to O-line. It's about that time.

If Dalton can figure out a way to not turn it over, actully if the whole offense can find a way not to turn it over, it will at least give them a chance. They are not good enough to overcome dumb mistakes, so stop turning it over and they give themselves a chance to do something. Espcially if the defense can fix its pass coverage mistakes, so thats all i ask ball control, and no turnovers!

You gotta like the way he handles tough situations THAT HE CREATES with his mistakes....Huh?

Also, it's awesome that it doesn't "phase him" (sarcasm) it's also awesome that he doesn't learn anything from it either.

Who gives a sh*t if he "doesn't let it phase him" I should be happy he doesn't have a fragile psyche??? F**k No! A QB is EXPECTED to be mentally tough....My problem with Dalton is, he will make many stupid mistakes, and even if he wants to do something about them, he CAN'T because of his lack of talent/skills. I DO NOT like his arm strength AT ALL, and don't think he can perform against NFL quality defensive players (this ain't SMU, New Mexico, and Tennesse Tech).......This dude better damn sure get his yards per attempt up from 4.5, If he doesn't start showing some serious improvement soon, send his ass to the bench, who knows, maybe he'll learn more watching for a while.......THE WORST THING YOU CAN DO is Impede AJ Green's progress and growth because you stick him with an inept QB.

AJ had just as bad a game as Dalton. They both will have growing pains.

Actually the worst thing you can do is quit. (Palmer)

You saw Gradkowski play on sunday right? He was worse than Dalton.

Does Dalton have his growing pains to go through ?? Sure he does.

My question for Pimp or anyone else who wants to chime in (i'm being serious, not angered)is, how much of his YPA is due to Dalton's inability to throw long or questioned arm strength, versus the offensive scheme being utilized by Gruden ?? The WCO offense likes the dink and dunk, giving the skill position guys the chance to make the play after the catch.

With what we have at those positions, Green, Simpson, Shipley, and Gresham, that line of thought "should" work. Do they need to take their shots downfield ?? Sure, but I think they are just trying to get down the simple things first. And with that being my thought, I think there is shared reasons why it hasn't worked to this point.

There were 6 drops by the receivers in the last game. Would 14-19 from Dalton looked a little different ?? I'm guessing yes, especially when considering what would have happened had the receivers actually caught the ball. Dalton is not above getting blame, like his 2nd pick that just sailed on him.

I bet should the Bengals happen to win one or both of the last two preseason games, people will be again calling for the playoffs.

For me ?? I simply want to see progression. I think we are getting that at this point.

Just me.

I think at this point we have to ask ourselves if we're getting better. With our team in so much upheaval, it doesn't do anyone an ounce of good to sit back and complain about how terrible everything is — especially with how green our key players are. It's absurd to crucify dalton at this point, label him a bust/mistake etc. The Jets are one of the best teams in the NFL (certainly on defense) and the weather conditions were terrible. That being said, were we better on offense this week? Absolutely. I'm not concerned that A.J. and jerome are going to drop 6 passes a game. What I do like is that our ROOKIE receiver made the best CB in the league look foolish several times. I DO like that Dalton has command of the huddle, doesn't look confused or nervous, and can bounce back from mistakes (his and others).

I think there's a lot to be optimistic about this season and can't wait to see our boys on Thursday. I just hope the idiots at PBS don't start booing after the first incomplete pass :bengal:

Heres what bothers me the fact that Marvin says, he wont play the starters as long as he has been because of the fast turn around. On one hand i get this, however Dalton and the offense need as much work as they can get in. I hope Marvin just lets these guys play, they need the work in real game time, so please Marvin just let them play.

The fast turnaround should mean nothing when you're talking preseason and a roster of 86 guys. So what if his starters played for 15 minutes on Sunday?

Thats what im saying, he needs to let the starters get as many of the reps as he can. They need the work so let them stay out there and do there thing. So i hope he decides to do just that, Dalton needs the work, hell i wouldnt care at this point if he played the whole game, the other QBs are worse then him!

I understand and I'm with you. No excuse for Dalton not to play the first series of the third qtr. That's what I expect to see.

this game won't be a roll-over, the panthers defense is underrated. The secondary is decent, the linebackers are good/above average, they need help on the d-line, if anything i expect ced to look good...

Not really worried about the wins and losses, but what i want if for Dalton to come out and start fast, complete passes, and get some confidence. How about running the ball better this week, o-line to continue to improve keeping Dalton up right all game.

Defense needs to keep playing the run great, would like to see more pass rush, and continue to improve on the pass defense and play aggresive.
