I owe somebody an apology

Hokie, or army, or someone else.

I gave one of you a hard time when you speculated that Coffman was a potential cut and that Coats was going to make the team.

Well, hell. Bad on me. Stunned I am, that Coats is still on this team, but there it is.

Anyway, my apologies. Whoever you were, you were all over it, and I bow to your read on the situation. Well done.

Yeah, just found it in the mega-merged thread. Hokie quite rightfully bumped it.

Would that he HAD been high when he surmised this.

At any rate, Hokie my apologies to you and a tip of the cap at your acumen.

My first reaction to the Coffman cut was one of surprise, but it does make plenty of sense. Coats biggest bugaboo is his inability to keep the football in his possession, but as a second/third TE behind Gresham he won't have the ball thrown his way more than maybe six times all year.

He could be a nice asset if Kelly continues to stink or more often in goal-line/third and short situations.

Hey, thanks man. Very righteous of you.

I think Coffman has potential. Just not right now and not in this offense on this team. Maybe in a different system he can be the player we think he can be.

The biggest indicator of Coats' position with the team was when they cut Foschi. That's when we knew they weren't looking for specifically a pass catching TE. Couldn't be because Coats sucks at catching balls. But it doesn't necessarily mean that he sucks balls.

All in all, trust me I would have liked Coffman to make the team because it might have meant he had turned the corner as a more complete player.

The good news is....we still have Gresham!

Still wish we would have drafted John Connor. D*mn Jets...

Ah man. You're telling me. Conner is a stud. Makes me sick. At least to have a chance at getting Pressley back from the Bucs. Damn.

I'm good with no FB at all. They can get by as is for a few weeks until Leonard returns, then let Leonard assume some of that role.

Did they IR Fui?

It appeared that when the Bengals spread the offense out, 2 WR's-2 TE's, or 1 TE-3 WR's, AND keeping Benson as the lone back, they've been able to move the ball effectively running and passing the ball. Maybe not as much of a need to have the FB in the offense as last season.

The Bengals look to have more offensive "looks" this year. Maybe getting by until Leonard comes back is a possibility.

Since I have been excessively high lately, this might be a misinterpretation.

Does anybody else think we keep Coffman instead of Coats if Fui and Leonard are both healthy right now? I don't think Peerman would have made the squad with a healthy Leonard and there would have been no need for Coats' versatility with Fui at fullback.

That's basically what it was. If we had a healthy Fui (or other decent FB) Coats would have been gone instead of Coffman. As for Peerman, the only reason he made the roster is because Leonard is hurt. They normally would have kept only 3 RB's instead of 4. Look for Peerman to be waived when Leonard gets back. Also, If they are able to pick up a FB off waivers from another team, that just may open up the door for a possible Coats release (I'm hoping here)

Now you did it...

My boy Gresham!!! It wasn't very long ago when I was pimping him hard (along with only a handful of others here) when everybody else wanted players like Dez Bryant, Mike Iupati, Mays, even guys like Pierre-Paul and Kindle. Those same guys were like "I'll just wait and hope to get a guy like Gronkowski later" (who would have already been gone before we selected in the 2nd) and "I would never waste a 1st Rd Pick on a TE" and "Coffman was the best pass catching TE in college when he came out" give him time, blah blah blah.......The only reason I'm not flipping out about Coats still being on the roster is because with Gresham around, Coats won't even be targeted...so let him block.

I'm not a fan of blowing off the FB position and I'm not sure they view Leonard in that capacity.

I can recall Leonard being happy the Bengals viewed him strictly as a RB when we traded for him.

Something the Rams didn't do...

That sorta makes my point. The Rams were the team that used a pretty hich draft pick to select Leonard...in large measure because he can give you snaps at the FB position. And while Leonard may not have liked how he was used the more important consideration is Rams were happy with him in that role until he hurt his shoulder. In short, his value is based upon his versatility. If viewed strictly as a RB Brian Leonard is probably a very easy player to replace.

Coats ?? Good God, I guess we have no other choice.

Exactly. Look, nobody owes me an apology because I didn't speculate much about Coffman being cut, but I've defended Coats everytime his name has been spit upon, mostly because of his blocking, special teams work, and the fairly impressive number of combined snaps that he plays. Point blank, he deserves a roster spot. Whether Chase Coffman ever did is a far bigger question.

Did they IR Fui?

Nope. He was Waived.

Per Bengals.com

The Bengals, who use the tight end as a fullback in some of their formations, opted to keep a blocker in Dan Coats rather than a receiver in Coffman. They waived injured Fui Vakapuna, a seventh-round pick in 2009 who was the only fullback on the roster.

Since he was waived/injured, Fui will revert to the Bengals' IR list if he clears waivers, which he almost certainly will.
