volcom69
Over on the Jags board they are making fun of the Bengals big time for this move, man did they hate Nelson. You know who cares the Bengals gave up a player that many of us here didnt even think would make the team. They keep saying he was our nickle last year, which he wasnt since he was hurt, and a rookie beat him out. So let Zimmer get ahold of Nelson and he will become a beast on this team, and if he dosnt oh well they didnt give an arm and leg for him. So i say great move, and a move they had to make. ArmyBengal
It a win win for both teams, they have a need for a CB and we have a need for a Safety. Both teams depth at those positions suck.Draft positions aside, the Bengals got the better of the deal and fill a need with the better all around player.Draft positions included, the Bengals got a former 1st round pick, for someone many thought would be cast aside.Let Zimmer work with him and keep him at his natural position and I think it's safe to assume he will be a better player.Note, I didn't call Nelson a beast, but I think the Jags fans are angry at the wrong person here. They need to look at their coaching staff and their use of players.Even though I wasn't hateful of D. Jones, here's something from our own board...Hey Jags fans, enjoy the smell of feet...
HairOnFire
It makes sense from the standpoint of David Jones being the teams 5th CB and expendable, if not a player who wasn't going to make the roster at all. So I'd call it brilliant even if Nelson is as advertised...which isn't all that good. This is an 11th hour move made by a team that didn't draft a safety at all, and then lost their fallback FA option for the entire year. Arguing about the wisdom of that no longer matters because cold hard reality suggests we have been reduced to this. A desperate stab in the dark. Kazkal
I can't think of any reason to complain. Our 5th cornerback traded for a player whose immense upside might stabilize our safety problem? Hell, he might be an upgrade over Gibril Wilson.I'd say our 6th I did not see Jones making this team myself so getting nelson for him is superb. BengalPimp
Reggie Nelson had a good rookie year, but frustrated the hell out of the Jags and their fans the past 2 seasons. They were very down on him. That said, I really like this move for 2 reasons. #1 He isn't expected to come in and be the starter like in Jacksonville. #2 If anybody has the ability to get the most out of players' talents' it's Zimmer. I like Nelson as a backup just as much as I did Gibril Wilson...and i liked Gibril Wilson.
TJJackson
There had better be a FS on the practice squad, just in caseI'm going with Jeromy Miles, second choice Rico Murray

DC_Bengals_Fan
The guy seems to have a lot of upside - former 1st round pick who can make plays. Downside is that we gave up our #4 CB. I like this trade. I think the potential exists to love it.

ArmyBengal
Yeah, still loving this move. Very unlike the Bengals to be making player for player trades at this point of the offseason.
wpeldios
This is a very good move. We gave up a player who was going to have minimal impact and added a guy with a ton of potential and who has had most of his struggles out of position. This guy can actually have a real impact on this team this year.
JoeMama
Seriously dude, you dont know what Zim can do. Every player on this defense was horrilbe till Zimmer came and coached. Crocker was horrilbe, Roy Williams was horrilbe, Adam Jones was horrilbe, so right about now ill take a horrilbe Reggie Nelson over a CB that will not play. That's true. It's not really a question of what the Zim can do. Dude's got a proven track record with getting the most out of players. And really, I have no problem with the trade itself. It's potentially low risk, high reward. I just don't see Nelson turning it around. I've just seen way too much blown coverage from him. He takes bad angles, he makes bad reads, he doesn't position himself like a natural ball hawk. Unloading Nelson is getting the kind of reaction from Jags fans that Bengals fans had when JT O'Sullivan was cut.
DC_Bengals_Fan
Unloading Nelson is getting the kind of reaction from Jags fans that Bengals fans had when JT O'Sullivan was cut.Sometimes a guy just needs to go somewhere else. Replace 'Jags' with 'Bears' and 'Nelson' with 'Benson' and the statement is equally true. With parity in the NFL and draft picks becoming incredibly expensive, you can really improve your team by finding relatively young players with a lot of talent who were (for whatever reason) not coached up that well in their last team. Really, for the price you can't beat it. High upside, and we're only losing a player whose name was taken primarily in vain last year. TJJackson
Sometimes a guy just needs to go somewhere else. Replace 'Jags' with 'Bears' and 'Nelson' with 'Benson' and the statement is equally true.That. Yes. +1.But let me extend it a bitCheck this out: http://gnb.scout.com/2/630949.htmlSo he has all the speed and athleticism you could want in a safety, and more. Check. You can't coach athleticism, but a great coach (Zimmer) brings out the best in athletic specimens. Check. That speed and aggression is ideally suited to special teams, and we need some special teams help right out of the gate. Is he willing to play special teams? Yeah, he is - from J Reedy: "Whatever they ask me to do, I’m going to do it, whether it’s special teams or helping out the defense" Check. He's signed for two more years (please please please no lockout), and we didn't have to pay him a signing bonus. Check.Has had the humbling experience of being released. No more "I'm a first-rounder" ego. Check. Is as result of the above now one very much one of the 'castoff defenders' that Zimmer likes to remind his players about, to stoke their competitive fires. Check. Will not be counted on to start, but instead will be Zimmered for a while. Check. In case I am not being clear enough about this - I LIKE this moveThe one minus I can think of, other than I wish this move had taken place a week or two ago when he'd have had some practice time, is he seems a little light on the brains side. Kazkal
Jag fans seem pretty down on the guy,But they seem to forget Zimmer success with cast aways...Plus another former 1st round who looked terrible for his former team (Adam jones/cowboys) Yet has looked great for us...PS,Not saying Nelson will be a steal but I trust Coyle & Zimmer have done a great job with our DB's so if they think Nelson is worth giving a spot to I fully support them

It's great value if he pans out. Nelson has nice measurables. There are reasons he went so high in the draft a few years back. I'm just saying fans might want to temper their enthusiasm if they think that just because Adam Jones and Cedric Benson blew up after a change of scenery, Nelson automatically will too. It's extremely rare that a bad player becomes fantastic overnight.Plus, I feel like I've seen enough of Nelson to say the guy simply lacks instincts. But hey, if I'm wrong, and he blows up in Cincy, I'll eat crow. It'll also reaffirm my belief that the Zim is one of the most underrated minds in the NFL when it comes to personnel development. We could use a DC like that in Buffalo.
membengal
You do understand, joem, that the Bengals are brining him in as the 4th safety, and traded a guy we were going to cut to get him? I am not sure what expectations you think people have that are unreasonable. He's depth with upside at the safety position. What's the crazy expectation in that? But many people seem to think we traded David Jones for a 1st round pick, and that's not exactly the case.Kind of like trading for Vernon Gholston. Yeah, the dude's a freak, but that doesn't make him a football player.I'm quite happy with the move, because he brings athleticism to STs and a better backup than was on the roster that was desperately needed. Most importantly... he's young with upside. Something this team lacks at the Safety position.

membengal
For the record, when Benson was brought in here, the guffaws were long and loud from Chicago fans.Just sayin'...That would be the "upside" part.
JoeMama
Yeah, I'm being a downer here. It's a Jacksonville thing. There's this black hole of negativity surrounding him in this town. redsbengalsbucks
The Jags board is a complete reverse of the Bengals board. They think Jones is going to be the Nickel corner they have been looking for and Reggie is worthless. We think that Reggie might make a good backup FS and that Jones was not going to be more than the 5th CB on the team if not cut.I think it is more realistic to think that Reggie Nelson can become a solid backup FS, while contributing on ST's this season; than it is to assume that David Jones is going to become a solid 3rd CB without getting toasted many times.Hey Jags fans, does your nickel CB have that new smell to him? Just wait, you will realize he actually smells like old feet!I wouldnt count on much of a conditional draft pick based on play either, if the safety's we have stay healthy.
