Predict the WRs on the Final Roster

So far every prediction made has Simpson making the team, right?

That's amazing.

In fact, I wonder how many of you would have made the choices you did if this poll had been conducted a month ago? Or for that matter, a week ago?

I've had Simpson on my list that I hoped would make the team from the beginning. In fact, he was one of the main factors in my 3 month debate with tdlong about how Matt Jones wouldn't make the roster.

so, lately i've been hearing murmurs about an injury settlement with antonio bryant. if those rumors are true and he ends up bein cut or IR'd, how do you see our WR corps shaping up?

after the first two preseason games, i've changed my opinion a little and see it this way:

chad- lock

t.o.- lock

shipley- lock

cosby- has looked too good/confident on ST to cut; can also play offense

briscoe- shows lots of potential...higher ceiling than caldwell

jones/caldwell/simpson- i'm leaning towards jones now b/c of his WR ability. caldwell, to me, looks about maxed out potential-wise and is nothing special...what he does well can be easily replaced by shipley. simpson does look better, but he still looks very raw. great athlete but, at this point, hasn't shown enough progress to warrant keeping, imo. if he played ST, it might be a different story.

what would be your guess or preference?

7 WR's:

Chad

TO

Bryant

Shipley

Simpson

Caldwell

Cosby

So if they should decide to carry the 7 WR's, as many have suggested, and the ones listed are the 7 in the end.

Which 2 of that group are inactive on gameday ??

Don't know. It could be 6 are active. Keep in mind that more than likely there could only be 2 QB's. The Bengals have always kept all 3 QB's on the active gameday list.

I would imagine that initially Bryant will be on the inactive gameday list. Doubt they keep 7 to make only 5 active on gameday.

I remain enamored with the idea of Simpson, so I am all for keeping him on. I just figured he was odd man out in the WR spending spree.

I wasn't pointing fingers. Just pointing out how quickly things can change.

I'm guessing no more than a week ago Simpson might have shown up on 20% of our projections....and that's being generous.

Now, just three preseason pass opportunities later, almost everything has changed.

Well, I was certainly hopeful from the off-season reports that Simpson had indeed made some positive strides, but the game against Denver finally gave some visual evidence that he has.

Still, I was sure there was no room at the inn for him, but with AB hurt, well, that changes things.

Again, I like how proactive the Bengals were in bringing in Owens and fixing what may have been a real error by some doctor or another in signing off on AB. At least, AB is a sideshow story, rather than a daily update kind of story. They have plenty on hand if they need to IR him. And Simpson's progress is a part of that, which I am really excited about.

that's what preseason's for. before last Monday night, no one had heard of Victor Cruz either.

I think the biggest part with Simpson is that for so long he's been viewed as the 2nd round pick that hasn't done a damn thing.

People want a quicker return on a 2nd round investment than what we've seen until this preseason. With that being the case, it's not hard to see why people (myself included) wanted to see the team do something to move on from Simpson. Now that we've seen him do well this preseason and Bryant not a guarantee, I have no issue with having him stick.

God knows it would be nice to get something from a 2nd round pick other than what we have to this point.

I think everyone should be rooting for him.

The impressive thing won't be Simpson making the final roster, it will be Simpson making the active gameday roster. He made the final roster last year, but spent it mostly riding the pine.

There's also the complication that the Bengals may be hunting for an extra active roster spot at TE, too.

Lat season, the Bengals generally went with five WRs and 2 TEs active on game day. Assuming they allocate the same seven spots to the two positions, five go immediately: Chad, TO, Shipley, Kelly and Gresham. That leaves two spots for some combo of Bubba Caldwell, Quan, Simpson, Crash Dummy and possibly a seventh WR if they go light at QB this year.

Since they both have actual game experience and return abilities should Shipley go down, I think you have to tap Caldwell or Cosby. Figure the other goes on the inactive list. That leaves you with Simpson vs. Coffman for the final active spot.

I'd say you're a hard guy to impress considering your earlier remarks about Simpson having no chance to make this years roster. And so what if he's doomed to ride the pine yet again? I'll repeat what I said earlier when that outcome was being discussed. Who better?

Sure, let's not forget the other toys in our suddenly overflowing toybox. Most haven't even been played with, right?

The advantage that Simpson has on Caldwell and Jones is that he can potentially stretch the field unlike any other WR on the roster. Jones is like a TE really. We've already got Gresham and Coffman.

Caldwell does not have the potential that Shipley and Simpson have. He's returned kick off's but with Scott there, he's no longer a necessity there either.
