Perfect Offseason?

Recommended Posts

Signed Adam Jones to an incentive laden contract as a luxury

Signed Antonio Bryant as a long term guy

Signed T.O. as a short term guy

Signed Gibril Wilson to provide Depth at Safety so that we don't have to start rookie free agents this year.

Resigned every player that matters

Drafted the TE we have been crying for the last decade and got him into camp with not even missing a week

Drafted slot receiver replacement for TJ

Drafted Long Term Nickel back with the ability to replace one of the Hall/Joseph combo if we can't resign them

Drafted talented DE oozing with ability

Drafted a 3/4 DE/DT tweener to get more pass rush up the middle

Can anyone argue with this offseason?

I wonder how much of all of this movement is tangentially related to the ongoing Marvin Lewis contract discussion.

Marvin's saying "I want more control."

Mike Brown saying "I don't want to give you control, but look, I'll do all of these things and be aggressive in the way that you've wanted me to... I can be a good GM. Please believe me. Please stay."

Or something like that...

I also wonder if Brown hasn't rubbed off on Marvin a bit and the Coach hasn't developed just a little bit of a soft spot for "projects" as well.

It's been one heck of an offseason for your boys in orange and black. To be honest with you I'm pretty disgusted about it. lol. Looking forward to the 8th (I think) of November! Ready to see my beloved Steelers take back the North!

Nice to see you come visit again. It should be interesting to see how things turn out with all the moves. What is your honest opinion of how Ben being out is going to affect the team ?? Having Troy back should be a boost to your defense. That being said, I still think we will come out on top this season as well. Good luck to you this season. Sort of....

I was never very excited about the Antonio Bryant signing. I hope he proves me wrong. Otherwise the offseason has been great.

I was not excited about the Bryant signing, as I think Boldin and Marshall would have been better fits.

But with them bringing in TO and having drafted Shipley, I think they can spread around the pressure and not place all the pressure on one guy.

As for Pacman, it appears he is getting back to his r1 form, which could make this the premier secondary in the NFL.

All in all, this is about as strong of an off-season as I can remember, even moreso after such a good season (even though the ending was sour).

Viva la Bengals 2010!

Thanks Army! Having Troy back is a huge difference in the secondary no question about it. Getting LE Aaron Smith back is another huge lift, our run defense wasn't the same without him. As for Ben, it's hard to say how he"ll respond to all that's happened. He finally gave his first lengthy interview a few days ago and it sounds like there's a lot of remorse there. Not "I'm guilty" remorse, but the "I can't believe I put my team in this position" kind of remorse. Either way, he's saying the right things, and apparently doing the right things as per Goodell's orders. Only time will tell. I think he needs to win right away though or things could spiral out of control. If he comes back in and we drop two or three in a row and he's not playing well it could get ugly in the 'Burgh.

This is the greatest off-season ever. I don't believe the Bengals have been this full of talent and balance in the 29 years I've been watching. Defense, offense, special teams. We aren't counting on a rookie to come in and save the day. Which feels good. Now we can finally draft guys, groom them and replace guys who are getting old. I know we're expecting big things from Gresham, but with Kelly being back he doesn't have to get thrown to the wolves.

No problem, good conversation from the opposing fanbase is always nice without all the stupidity and name calling that usually comes into play. I had all but forgotten about Aaron Smith and I agree that he will provide a lot to your d-line. Regardless of what happens with Troy coming back, at least your secondary doesn't resemble the cluster f*ck that is the Ravens secondary. Talk about a bad offseason...

I really like how our offseason has gone, but.....I would have liked to pick up a good Kicker. Am I the only one concerned about Nugent and Rayner? Apparently Darrin Simmons hasn't been too happy with either. They have both been inconsistent so far. We have a tough schedule, and even though we have a top 5 defense and a much improved Offense, some of these tough games (Colts, Saints, Pats, Chargers) may come down to a FG......

Still glad Shayne is gone though.....

I think time will tell how this offseason went, starting this weekend. I loved the moves that they made, and i hope it pays off in the end. If Carson and T.O. get on the same page soon the offense attack can be lethal. Good thing they have more preseason games this year to get in rythem

Kai Forbath in 2011...

and I will be Echoing that all the way to next April's Draft.

I can't remember pimping a player so far out from the following draft, but I really think Forbath is going to be huge in some teams kicking game.

I hope it's ours depending on how our guys do this year.

This offseason has been filled with a lot of hope for the 2010 season. Hopefully it all pans out. Heck, if half of it pans out, this team will be fine.

Forbath has certainly been impressive. But just some food for thought... his college career pales in comparison to Nugent's at OSU. He holds 22 school records and is the only kicker to ever win the team MVP.

For whatever reason, Nugent doesn't appear to be that player anymore. It seemed like the jump to the NFL was a difficult one for him. I'm not exactly sure why, but I'd be at least a little concerned that Forbath would also have some trouble.

I'm still holding out hope that Nugent can once again be the guy who hits 50+ game winners with ice water running through his veins. That would certainly be better than needing to use a 2nd or 3rd round pick on a kicker.

I think Nugent will be fine, he had a pretty good season as a rookie and then something affected his head. I think coming back home will be good for him, lots of FG kickers have issues with their first team and find success with their next one, see Graham, Shayne.

Don't get me wrong, I have always liked Nugent and hope if he makes the team, has a great season. If he were to be so lights out the Bengals wouldn't have to draft a kicker, then it's a win win for everyone. If the kicker we have fails, then yeah, Kai Forbath in 2011...

Perfect? Not really sure. The Maualuga and Benson issues and the Pac-Man signing brought up some of the usual negativity but not for any length of time it seems. All the TO discussion had it's good points and bad but in the end most people seem to think it will be a positive thing provided he stays happy.

So I'd say it was definitely a solid off season. They had a good draft and Gresham was only out for a few days. They jettisoned Graham and J. Johnson who were two of Marvin's first year players. So he has begun the process of cycling through players as he said would happen once they developed a solid player base and personnel system. I hope Bryant works out but I will wait to see on that one. I think the sleeper move might be the acquisition of Gibril Wilson.

There was no major hangover or let down from the playoff loss and no implosion like after the playoff game in 2006 which concerned me. And Chad is saying and doing all the right things after his busy spring.

But they start off with a couple of tough games so we will know right away how it all worked out.
