The Bengals took their 2009 team picture Monday morning at Paul Brown Stadium and Marvin Lewis felt pretty good about his seventh photo as head coach.

"I'm excited about this team and their commitment to winning," Lewis said before Monday's practice. "It's a team that has really, really strong leaders, and (we've) really subtracted from the not so positive influences that we've had here. I think this group has each and every guy pulling in the right direction."

The group voted quarterback Carson Palmer and left tackle Andrew Whitworth as captains of the offense, middle linebacker Dhani Jones and defensive tackle Domata Peko captains of the defense and safety Kyries Hebert special teams captain.

They also are expected to vote for Whitworth later in the month as their permanent NFL Players Association representative.

Whitworth, otherwise known as "The Governor," who may or may not pursue elective office in his home state of Louisiana, says he looks forward to having the job for real as the collective bargainning negotiations begin to heat up. With the departures of T.J. Houshmandzadeh and Dexter Jackson, Whitworth has been serving as the interim.

The Governor describes himself as a moderate on the CBA issue.

"To me the key is realizing that playing football is the most important thing," he said Monday. "Us putting on a show for fans is more important that exactly how many millions of dollars everyone gets. The real issue is a lot these deals only affect the top percentile of the NFL. A lot of your top players see this money, but your minimum salary guys don't…There needs to be give on both sides."

Whitworth agrees that there must be a rookie wage scale.

"A lot of guys, especially players, will tell you…it doesn't make sense for rookies to come into the NFL as one of the top paid players at their position," he said.

Rookie Rey Maualuga also got a vote of confidence Monday. He said he was told he'll be the starting SAM linebacker for Sunday's opener.

a a For the first time in his seven seasons as Bengals head coach, Marvin Lewis is set to start the same middle linebacker on consecutive Opening Days with Dhani Jones Sunday against the Broncos.

But he has made a change next to him. Rookie Rey Maualuga said Monday before practice that he has been told he'll start at SAM linebacker in his NFL debut at Paul Brown Stadium. He's the only rookie of the 22 starters, although Kevin Huber is to punt and Quan Cosby is to return punts.

He made sure he thanked Rashad Jeanty, the incumbent that has started at SAM in 22 of the last 24 games dating back to 2007.

"Rashad's been there every day helping me out and when he sees me doing something wrong in practice, and when I come off the sidelines, he'll make sure he'll tell me what I did wrong and coach me up," Maualuga said.

Yeah, this stuff does matter. Here's a consensus first-team All-American who was named the nation's top defensive player last year. But told he was starting…

"I can't even…There are no words," Maualuga said. "I'm just so happy. I'm excited everything fell into place. All you can do is come out and practice hard and you'll be rewarded in the end. It doesn't end there. I have to keep my spot and work even harder just to stay on top."

Maualuga had a scare early in training camp when a sore shoulder and sore leg muscles knocked him out of about a week of practice and the preseason opener. But he roared into the last three games for 12 tackles.

"I had to make sure I kept my head in the playbook and make sure I didn't fall behind. Not one time," he said. "I didn't want a play to come into the huddle and not know what I was doing and miss my assignments."

Maualuga got a sense of what happens when it doesn't work out. He went for a horse carriage ride in downtown Cincinnati over the weekend with tight end Kolomona Kapanui, a guy that didn't make the roster.

"He got it. He left this morning," Maualuga said. "It's hard. That's the thing about going to the next level. It's all business. You gain friendships and establish relationships with other guys. You just have to understand that part. You come here to win games and go home."

And if Dhani doesn't return next year allowing Rey to take over the middle position, think of how much more knowledgable he will be because he played a different position his first season with a smart veteran like Dhani in the middle his first year. I think it will help him be the leader than Dhani is viewed as. Honestly I think that's what Dhani brings to the table the most. The fact he has been versatile in his career and knows what the other LB positions are suppose to be doing.

I'm happy he will be getting the start...

Probably predicted elsewhere but I will go out on a limb, albeit a short one, and make the call for Rey-Rey as the DROY.

How he fell to #2? Ask they guys who let Brady fall, TJ fall, Romo and Warner go un-drafted and took guys like Couch, Akili, Cade, Ware, Klingler, et al, so early. (hm, a couple of those were Bengals...yikes)

I second that prediction! Its going to be nice seeing Rivers and Maualuga playing side by side....

Think of the depth! Brandon Johnson, Rashad Jeanty and Abdul Hodge as the reserves. It's amazing how the Bengals LB corp has gone from more than likely the worst in the league just a couple of seasons ago, with guys like Caleb Miller and Anthony Schlegal starting, to one of the better ones from top to bottom leaguewide.

Why did he fall to the 2nd again? Actually, I don't think I've ever known.

Because he was a bad character guy!!! and a two down player!!!!! Suckers thx for the steal ^_^

Oh right, I had no idea about that. Wacky stuff. I mean, did he kill a nun or something? Falling to the second round with his talent is nuts for some character issues.

I hope they are smart enough to rotate the LB's early and often. There is no reason to play only Rey, Dhani and Rivers with the backups that are available this season. Keep everyone fresher longer with the depth they have.

Same here. I'd be telling these guys to hit it hard every play, because if they get winded there's a solid player behind them. Should help *immensely* in the 4th quarter.

I'm more worried about D-line depth, the running offenses in the AFC North have traditionally gassed our front 4. I'm particularly hopeful that they can get an effective 3-man DT rotation going at least. Also need somebody to step up as backup DEs.

rey has been put in a perfect situation to excel he has a former teammate on one side, a versatile, intelligent veteran in the middle, a try hard veteran pushing him for playing time, a fellow young somoan as a crucial defensive leader anchoring the d-line, and he is under the tutelage of an elite linebackers coach.

he'll have every opportunity to succeed.

makes you think back to how a guy like Odell would have done in this new environment.
