Ickey44
per the .comWelcome to the NFL Mr. Coffman. Put your booties on.Damn, that sucks. Hope a good TE can be found on the waiver wire. I don't know if we can survive another year of Coats starting.
ArmyBengal
Just like was mentioned in the Andre Smith thread, I can see this as a spot Smith will start getting reps sooner rather than later as that extra TE.Utecht going to IR only furthers that thought of the coaches... BengalByTheBay
I hate to say it because I really thought he was a good FA signing last year, but Utecht appears to be a man of glass at this point.

ShulaSteakhouse
I heard Andre Smith at either FB or DT, so Collins can set the NFL record for holding calls in a season.

HAPPYJAQ
Utecht is done as a Cincinnati Bengal. After five concusions and a year out of football, for what reason would he even come back?I'll tell you what, I bet the fans who were a little cool on picking up Coffman in the 3rd round are happy he's a Bengal now. I think the Utecht injury is really going to help his development as a football player, in the sense that he will be no worse than the #2 TE all season long. After a long offseason, who would've thunk we ever'd be talking about Daniel Coats and Jeremi Johnson starting at TE and FB, respectively, in Week 1 this year??The thought of putting Andre Smith is in as a blocking TE/tackle eligible is interesting in the fact that the Bengals could conceivably go with only 2 at TE in Coats and Coffman. If that's the case, I'd rather go heavy at another position as opposed to most people's choice opinion that the team should carry a second FB. Fui/Pressley should be able to get through waivers without a claim to land on the PS. Even outside of that, how do you dress two FBs on gameday, when none are core Special Teamers? That extra roster spot that opened up might be the difference on keeping a DeDe Dorsey, Corey Lynch, or Frostee Rucker, who I think are more talented individually (in addition to being more valuable to the team), than Jeremi Johnson's backup. Put your booties on.The drafting of Coffman now looks better than it did on draft day. I am pretty happy with this, we may have just found our Dallas Clark. ArmyBengal
It was from the Andre Smith thread on the official site that made the comment about how both Levi and Willie held out and didn't get their first starts until later in the season. In the mean time while giving them a chance to develop, they took snaps during the game as the extra TE in blocking packages. I think that would be monsterous having him in there in those situations until he developes further...

jjakq27
I hope Coffman is ready. Based on the first Hard Knocks, he wasn't very impressive. But it's only TV right?I do think they have run some "jumbo" packages before using guys like Kooistra and Andrews in short yardage if I remember right.Does anyone think they need to actively pursue a legit tight end? Whether it is a second stringer or a starter? If they only use the spot as an extension of the o-line them maybe Coats will do but I think I remember more of his dropped passes than actual completions. He just doesn't seem very agile. I know they drafted Coffman this year but I hope they don't expect a great deal out of him because that may be unrealistic. And having Carson hung out to dry on a missed assignment just can't happen this year.
Sea Ray
I think they ought to be watching the waiver wire very carefully. I see that former OSU TE Ben Hartsock was waived this week

I wouldn't say I questioned the pick, but HappyJaq may be talking about me. Prior to the draft I wrote several posts about targeting a CB who could play the nickle role as early as the 3rd round, and as the two 3rd round picks were approaching I made a pitch for CB Asher Allen, and even OG Kraig Urbik. I simply wasn't looking at the TE spot. Frankly, I don't think I've ever said a negative word about Coffman, but yeah....at that point in the draft he was off my radar...and in large part because I felt like it was too early to make a hard decision about Utecht. mgilgris
I also think that the Patriots have a number of tight ends on their roster that they will need to cut. They may be someone to steal a TE from when they do their cuts

Please oh Please pick somebody up who can block and catch, or at least just block, and not fumble.
