icehole3
now I know why he moved to defense, sounds like the Bengals were gonna take him but...[media]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RefnjpmIuzE
ArmyBengal
He may have been told the Bengals were going to take him in the 2nd and that would have made sense, but I'm SURE the Bengals didn't see Rey dropping that far and you have to take the value pick at that point. If they had passed on Rey to take Barwin wouldn't have sat well with me. Anyway, this interview also goes to show that you can't really put to much into what the players or agents say what the prospects can and can't do when going into the draft. He plainly stated that he felt better with his hand on the ground and that he wasn't going to say that prior to the draft though as it would have narrowed the teams that would have bene interested in him.Getting Michael Johnson in the 3rd made everything that much sweeter, so no issues for me... Bearcat1975
I agree. There is no way you pass up on Rey at that point. Plus, I have my doubts as to how Barwin's talents will transfer to the NFL.
Kazkal
Would have loved to get Barwin but the top 3 rounds fell perfectly for us... No way I would trade Maualuga for him though <3 <3 <3 maualuga
gregstephens
Absolutely. Rey Rey will prove to be one of the best Bengals' best value draft picks of all time. And Johnson in the third along with TJ's man-crush Scott may make this one of the best draft classes in team history.
BengalszoneBilly
Absolutely. Rey Rey will prove to be one of the best Bengals' best value draft picks of all time. I thought the exact same thing about Odell Thurman when they nabbed him after David Pollack. The truth is, only time will tell. I do believe the odds are with us this time. ArmyBengal
It's natural for fans to do a couple of things when it comes to draft picks. After the initial drafting of a player fans don't like, they will find a way to deal with it in about a week or so and end up giving reasons why the same player they hated initially will do great things for the team. After a player fans like and wanted didn't get drafted by our team, they will find a way to deal with it in about a week or so and end up giving reasons why the same player they liked initially will end up being a draft bust.I thought Barwin was a good player that I would have been happy seeing the Bengals draft and think he will do good things in Houston with Super Mario playing along with him on the Texans defense. BlainThePain
If everyone remembers, the time on our second round pick this year got down to 4 seconds before the pick got in. I have a feeling there was a huge argument between the scouts, Marvin, Zimmer, and FitzGerald on whether to go with Maualuga or Barwin. Lets hope the ones that wanted Maualuga are correct. JoePong
Let's see, a stud MLB from a powerhouse NFL factory like USC, or some guy from UC who intrigued scouts with his versatility but never could stay at one position, who coaches are still trying to find ut what he can do well and how to use him? Tough choice...I don't think so.Sure, I would have liked Barwin...in the 5th round.

ArmyBengal
Rey Maualuga and Michael Johnson ORConnor Barwin and whatever player we would have taken in the 3rd ??Take a look at who was there in the 3rd round around the time we picked or even later and there is no way in hell you could have envisioned us having the 2nd and 3rd round picks that we did. Down the road, may some of those players perform better than what we got ?? Sure, it's possible, but going into the draft and knowing what you know, you DON'T PASS on the guys that we got in the hopes of getting someone that overachieves and outperforms the guys you have less doubt with prior to the draft. Is there anyone here that can say they are NOT looking forward to seeing what Maualuga and Johnson can do for this defense ??I'm f*cking STOKED !!! ArmyBengal
Hines Ward, some other opponent, and even when they start camp. I want to see these guys come in and work hard at making a spot on the roster for themselves. I want to see them make it hard for the coaches to keep them off the field. While I don't want to see them hurt any of our own players, I want to see them come in with that type of mentality.
Wraith
Between Roy, Rivers, Maualuga, and the rest of the defense who watched that cheap shot last year, Hines better have his head on a serious swivel. He is likely to be target #1 coming into the season.

I hope it's Rivers that does it, but I'll settle for anyone who does it.
HoTbOy
Don't know much about CBarwin, but it sounds like he is a decent player, if he was taken in the 2nd round, but I'm not mad at what we got in the 2nd and 3rd and can't wait to see them on the field... As of right now, Maualuga is going to play the same position Barwin would have played for us. That Peter Boulware-type OLB that constantly attacks the line of scrimmage. Can anyone else think of a certain player that was a Samoan OLB from USC that constantly attacked the line of scrimmage?

ArmyBengal
They may have in fact still taken Johnson in the 3rd, but I would just adjust my question a little and ask:Connor Barwin and Michael Johnson ORRey Maualuga and Michael Johnson ???I still go with option #2 there... Actually, Lewis spoke about this immediately after the draft, admitting the Bengals phone begane to ring with multiple trade offers from other teams interested in drafting Rey. Lewis said those offers were being weighed right down to the last minute when....(wait for it)....Mike Brown put the end to the debate by declaring the team would pass on all trade offers and draft Maualuga. So bottom line, it didn't really come down to Maualuga or Barwin, but rather....Maualuga or a trade offer that hasn't been made public yet, and may never be.
