Just think how excited he would've been after #2 went by with no Bengals. Killer of dreams.

Sorry, but we can't live in denial just because Bearcat isn't around to constantly point out the Bengals flaws. No, we need to come to grips with exactly who the Bengals are and if possible learn to accept our reality as best we can. And by accepting our reality I mean embracing who we are, whatever that might be, with our heads held high. Be proud. Because we're fans of the very best 26th ranked team in the entire NFL....and that still counts for something.

HoTbOy
I think that they are going on last years showing and can't possibly be going on the draft, off-season moves, and the returning off healthy players, even before last year they were average with an 8-8,7-9 record, so you would at least put them in the middle of the pack and not in the bottom half...Nonetheless, I think they will be at least 8-8 and maybe sneak in 1-2 wins in maybe a game they weren't expected to win...I would have them like 16-18 area, and if the D can win a game or 2 that maybe a playoff spot, I like that some people are overlooking the Bengals, let's surprise some people... COB
I think we're in the top half of the teams in the league. The way the Bengals played the last several games last year, combined with adding a new tackle, our all pro quarterback, a new linebacker, and just one more year's experience in Zimmer's defensive scheme - all those things add up to improvement. And we weren't really all that bad at the end of the year last year. Partway through the season we improved the physical presence on both sides of the ball by adding Benson (knocked Polomalu loopy) and Crocker (knocked Holmes out). To my eyes, those additions were huge. A big part of the Bengals problem was the perception held by other teams that we were soft. You run on the field with that over your head and you've half lost the game already. And the only way to make it go away is by bringing some heavy stuff to the contact part of the game. You can't talk your way out of that reputation. Chad could yammer away to ESPN for a thousand years, it wouldn't change that aspect of the game. But I think the Bengals did change that aspect of their game. And kept improving it with their offseason moves. They're just a different team now from a physical standpoint. So various sportswriters around the country can't closely follow every team, and certainly can't follow the little nuanced shifts in a team's psyche that take place. Without a stat line to regurgitate the intangibles that actually make up a lot of who wins football games, writers can't be blamed for rating us 26th or whatever. The Bengals are in the top half. ArmyBengal
Here's my line of thought and it may come across pessimistic, but bear with...They don't have anything else to go on BUT our record from last season. We have no idea how the free agents we got are going to play into the system we have here. Roy Williams may never be the player he was when he was going to all those pro bowls and be the liability in coverage many were blasting him about on his way out the door. Tank may not be the dirupting force in the middle of the d-line we are hoping he will be coming back into a 4-3 defense he did well in while a Bear.Rivers coming back healthy will be HUGE for the defense and it will be nice seeing him back out there again. However, I'm still of the mindset that while we did actually improve toward the end of the season and YES we did win those games, the level of competition can be a bit deceiving. That #12 overall looks really nice, but I'm hoping we can keep that going with the schedule we have. Carson coming back from injury is a big part of what needs to happen and what do we really know outside of the fact he says he's 100% and he's on a pitch count ?? He hasn't taken any hits and it still remains to be seen how that is going to play out.The draft was amazing and I still look at it and can't believe we got the players we did, but we have one that may or may not hold out in Andre Smith (I'm still not concerned as I like Collins), Maualuga that may not even start and will probably be working a new position, and M. Johnson who will also be playing a new position at times. Don't get me wrong, I'm optimistic about their impact, but we don't know anything right now, so it's hard to do anything more than guess. Most importantly in my opinion is, what are we going to get out of the o-line ?? If they make it happen early and come together it will certainly help Benson, Carson, AND the receivers, but there are also questions there. New LT, LG, Center, and RT. While they may have some experience, they are certainly going about things differently with the line and we have no idea there either.Once again, I'm actually optimistic that things will play out well for the Bengals, but that's a guess on my part and I can understand why they have us where they do. I'll go another step in saying that I also don't think it will take much to see us move back up in the upper half like most seem to think we are right now. The first 5 games will certainly set the tone with 3 division games in weeks 3-5.
HairOnFire
According to BengalPimp's NFL Rankings, I've ranked the Bengals 12th out of 32 teams. Who's to say my rankings arent as good as some of those idiots? Agreed. I'm not much of a fan of power rankings in general and the ones posted in May and June seem to be the most worthless of the bunch. In fact, that's why I didn't bother posting a blurb about the NFL Networks 26th best ranking when it was first aired. It simply didn't mean a thing to me. But had I bothered responding I would have argued the Bengals will be a middle-of-the-pack squad and a fringe playoff contender this coming season, not one of the worst teams in the NFL.
