Brown Turds may cut Steinbach

So that's three of you that won't admit you were wrong. I really really REALLY hope Cleveland cuts him. That would spice up the off-season tremendously from here to camp. Perhaps a 12-step program to admitting you were wrong is in order...

The Bengals' decided to over-pay Willie and Levi at the same time, instead of Steinbach.

Sounds like a typical dumb Bengals move to me. Not sure who's wrong about what here?

Wait a minute. A line that allows over fifty sacks last year. You draft a tackle that is not only unproven on an NFL level, but here-to-fore still unsigned even. You're relying on a fourth round draft to anchor at center. You can't find a place for a proven, experience Pro-Bowl level lineman that can play all positions and already knows our offense if the price were reasonable?

All of sudden that o-line we've spent all off season grousing about (ad nauseum even) is in too great of shape to add Steinbach in the mix?

Personally, not buying it.

I agree and would take Steinbach back over Whit or Livings any day. It would make that line really start to look good for once.

We still don't even know who's going to play RT or LG, and the Center is unproven. None of the options are anything to get excited about, as it stands. It might not be that much different than last year.

Steinbach wasn't a T. The Bengals were not going to pay him like he was. The Browns for some reason did. And now might cut him.

One for the Bengals, no matter how you all try to revision history. Steinbach wanted T money. No amount of revisionism will fix that impasse.

I give you credit, you have the horse down and begging for mercy, but she still ain't dead.

Fact is, any decision has to be evaluated relative to another alternative. In a vacuum, is Steinbach worth what the Clowns gave him? Probably not, but did I trust the Bengals to spend the money better than that? No, and they proved that by spending it on players who would be either not on the team, or dragging it down, within two years.

Not to mention which, smart people in the NFL realized that a great LG isn't a second class citizen on the O-line. Ask Shaun Alexander and Adrian Peterson how overpaid Steve Hutchinson is. Please, tell me how Stacy Andrews is worth more than the best G in the league because he can line (and do a crap job) up at T. Sometimes making a good decision means questioning conventional wisdom that isn't always correct - like your "guard vs. tackle" rule.

Never mind the fact that a competently run team wouldn't have *let* Steinbach get to FA, or that the Bengals could probably have gotten him cheaper than the Browns paid - that's for another show.

Well, I'm not putting him at LT since I like Collins there. LG is fine with Whit/Livings. Bobbie's good at RG and I have zero doubt that A. Smith can hold the fort at RT even if he holds out. I like Steiny, but I don't see him as clearly an upgrade at any of these spots.

Center is an interesting question. He had mixed results there in emergency duty. Could he improve if focused on the position full-time? Maybe. OTOH it's hard to say whether he'd be better than, say, Cook since we haven't seen Cook in action.

The only scenario under which I'm more interested in Eric is if Whitworth is the LT. But I don't think that happens.

DC...I like Steinbach at G, but there was no "letting" him get to FA. He wanted T money, which he got. And in no universe, no way, no how, is Steinbach and Steve Hutchison to occupy the same sentence in terms of impact at G. Nope. Not buying that comp.

Steinbach "won" because he found a team stupid enough to pay him ridic money. But I don't fault the Bengals for their inability to change reality and make Steinbach take less to stay here. I would be glad for him to come back, at a decent price, and play G (or even C) for this team. But this just underscores how stupid Cleveland was.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7Anf_uLnCc4...feature=related - Wasn't Carson hurt by that time? "Blitz that defensive line and couple inside linebackers. " Definition of a Bungles fan.

- Poor old Cincy.

I don't think Steinbach is going anywhere JMO. To be honest those Cleveland videos did make me chuckle a little bit, but you are no better than us!

Yeah, this is a rumor from the "consider the source" file. If Chick says it's so, bet on the opposite happening.

I would expect the Browns to deal Steiny before cutting him. Which raises the possibly related point that, despite Cleveland's apparent willingness to deal just about anyone on the roster prior to the draft, I never heard Eric's name mentioned.

I moved away from Cincinnati in 1992, and one thing is still happening at the Bengals games!!! WLWT is still INSISTING on interviewing Bengal Fans after they've been liquored up!!

That first video was HILARIOUS!! "They should ummm blitz the defensive line":blink::blink:

What Steinbach wanted to get paid is beside the point. The Bengals turned down an offer made from Steinbach's camp and I guess they had their reasons. However, if those reasons include how much better they thought Willie and Andrews were going to turn out, I wouldn't put that anywhere NEAR the camp of "One for the Bengals"...

Steinbach is MUCH better than any of the backups we currently have and to think this o-line doesn't need more help outside of what we got this draft, you are crazy. As a matter of fact, anyone is more than welcome to come back to this thread come next draft and see how many more o-linemen we draft as proof.

I agree with you here and I think that part of the reason that the Bengals weren't enamored with the prospect of paying Steinbach more than 5 million a year is because of the fact that he struggled with in-line blocking against the massive DTs. The interesting fact is that we're now using the zone-blocking scheme, which is a perfect match for Steiny's strengths as an offensive lineman.

I haven't really followed Steinbach since he left here, so what's the scouting report on him these days? I thought it was crazy that Cleveland gave him Hutchinson money and he looked only average in the games against the Bengals, IMO.
