Spor_tees
Devery Henderson resigned with the Saints so we can stop talking about that one. Robert Mecheam might be available for a trade now, even though I think he is a bust!Meachum drops more balls than a super lotto machine...there is no way I would want him. The Bengal have enough guys with lots of speed and suspect hands.

It does say a lot about how the Bengals see Jerome Simpson's development that they would give Coles a 4 year deal. So unless they plan on trading or releasing Chad before the end of his contract, Simpson and Caldwell are relegated to 4th and 5th receiver roles with the Bengals behind Coles, Chad, and Henry. Caldwell will get plenty of playing time, and will be great in the slot as a #3 WR. Simpson will play if he develops. Remember, TJ Houshmandzadeh caught 40 passes as our 4th WR early in his career. Instead of having two guys accounting for 200+ receptions, we'll be more balanced and can utilize guys depending on the situation.Besides, don't necessarily expect Coles to be here all 4 years. I think the WR position is immediately better than it was last year, even with TJ leaving.

cincyhokie
If Caldwell is best suited to play the slot, he would be the number 3 receiver above Henry at 4. Years of seniority don't mean a thing. Who can you see making bigger catches and bigger plays? I think it's Caldwell.
Baraka
it'll be interesting to see the way the contract is structured, it may be for four years, but is it done in a way that after two we cut him with little cap penalty

I think Henry's size and speed allow Carson to make more mistakes in the passing game that Henry's physical abilities can make up for. You certainly see Carson overthrow Chad more than you do Henry. Sure Henry seems to get alligator arms at times, but I also don't see Henry on the sidelines crying like a baby into Carson's ear hole after a missed pass play. TecmoFever
Good thing I was freaking out yesterday before they signed Benson. I should have known that the Bengals had a great plan in action the whole time. Why would I ever second guess this excellent organization? All kidding aside, I now will be wondering up through the draft whether Mr. Ocho Cinco will be in stripes next year.

But remember, WR's make that kind of money.GREAT DEAL, Solid Signing.I love the signing myself, but I found it funny visiting the Jets site to see what they would say:7 mill per season and to think Housh is getting 8. Wow the Bengals are f**king retardedrofl the bengals are going to win 1 game next season, i guarantee it. what a piece of s**t organization they are, and now they have a piece of s**t player to match...have fun LCWTF?! Someone was willing to pay him 7 mil. a year? Thats seriously messed up....That's absurd. He is still the second by a lot compared to OchoCinco unless they are planning on dumping him.way to much money to give him.TJ is a lot better at this point in career then coles___________________________________________________________________I think it is funny because we tried to sign TJ and he left so we got a guy that is younger and has been a number one reciever in the league. I am really happy with this signing, I am interested to see what he can do with a QB that isn't washed up, a bust, or injured.PS: I still love Brett Farve, but he was injured last year

HAPPYJAQ
This is a huge move by the Bengals, for a variety of reasons:1. The move allows the Bengals to ease Caldwell and Simpson into more playing time while grooming at least one of them for a starting role in '10. 2. It likely means that Chad will be playing his final season in Cincinnati this year. 3. It officially ends the Michael Crabtree/Jeremy Maclin discussion, even if they're available at #6.4. Signing Coles means that Chris Henry and Antonio Chatman will be fighting for the 5th and final roster spot, unless one of the other receivers has a break-out Summer, this allowing the team to trade Chad for a pick/s in '10. The good money is on Chatman to make the team, if he's fully recovered from his injuries (related note: no mention of him at the Collins camp this year, as he's been the past 3 offseasons).5. Based on the value of the contract, the Bengals much-speculated 3rd round compensatory pick has likely turned into a 5th, at best. I would think the Bengals would be in line for an additional 4th for Stacey, provided he plays as expected this season.6. The Bengals 2nd round impact, Jerome Simpson, will likely begin the season as 4th on the depth chart and will almost certainly have more inactive weeks in '09. It is very tough for NFL teams to compete when they consistently miss in the early rounds of the draft. I'm not saying he's officially a bust, but high 2nd round picks are expected to start by their 2nd season on most teams. I'm not sure how I feel about this signing right now, as we're clearly rebuilding. As far as the offense goes, it certainly helps Palmer but probably doesn't do a whole lot for the development of the young receivers. I'm also curious about the 4 year contract that runs untl Coles is 36. How Chad reacts to this is anybody's guess. At the very least, we added another leader and hopefully a player that the young guys can learn from.

I think Coles has proven that he can be a number one reciever in the league and with Chad's departure that would leave us with starting WR's of Coles, Caldwell, and Henry with Simpson as the fourth guy. This is a lot more solid than a lot of the recieving corps in the league and I would be very happy with it.Trading Chad would allow everyone in here to get their hero Rey Magualaga after taking an OT at six or for us to take Orakpo or Raji at six and draft either Andre Smith or Oher at 13. How much are CJ and Henry going to help their development as professionals? Coles was a captain for the Jets along with Favre. I think that says alot and the Bengals need more leaders especially now that TJ is gone. A few more things to think about: Is it a given that Chad won't be traded now that we have Coles? Also, just because we have Henry on the roster, why can't Caldwell, and even Simpson, be given an opportunity to play more. I could very easily see Chapman, Holt, and Henry fighting for roster spots come training camp.

Scottishbengal
With the offence (reportedly) focusing more on running the ball this year does it matter who we signed as TJ's replacement?I'm surprised we didn't make a play to bring back Michael Westbrook and with Fitzpatrick gone was the call made to Scott Mitchell? UF_Gators_15
Coles is a great get! I love it, I am not gonna bash TJ but I think Coles is a better pro...just goes about his business with a lot less bitching! Y does everyone think this stops the Crabtree Maclin discussion b/c the first thing I thought was that Chad is outta here! So, yeah, if we stay like we are then yeah that discussion is over but if we trade Chad aren't we back to wanting Crabtree and Maclin? Put me down for Crabtree, he's a stud and he compliments Lavernues better.
volcom69
I understand that, but i would have liked them to go after a free agent for depth or for starter. This team is in desparte need of a Center and now that Birk signed they only one out there worth anything might be Jermey Newberry, but i dont think they will sign him. So they better hope to get Woods in the 2nd or somebody who can start. I dont see the taking Rey with the first pick though
