NFL | Rentmeester works out at Pro Day

Wed, 11 Mar 2009 17:59:47 -0700

J.J. Pesavento, of NFLDraftBible.com, reports University of Wisconsin FB Bill Rentmeester ran the 40-yard dash in 4.73 seconds. He also measured a 31 1/2-inch vertical jump and a 9-foot-4 broad jump.

I started to post this last night but wasn't sure how interested folks would be. This Rentmeester sounds interesting, to say the least. I'm shocked that he has that kind of athleticism. All of those are impressive numbers for 254 pound FB. Here's a pretty good read on him, from the Wisconsin State Journal.

I like his name. Rentmeester. It's up there with Blackstock, as far as names go. How about we get a look at undrafted free agent Clit Navigator?

Rentmeester sounds like some kind of conniving landlord. My favorite Bengal name of all-time is Forey Duckett, whose name could be tricky to say if you've had a few drinks.

Wonder whatever happened to him. He was supposed to be the Bengals' Bobby Taylor.

I can't find anything showing this kid even in the top 10 at the Fullback position. I mean why bother ?? Is it to much to think that taking one of the top FB's in the draft with a 5th is out of the question when it is such a need for the team ??

i agree. last year, the top FB was in the 3rd round, along with two 5th rounders and a 7th. we should be able to find a quality lead blocker in the latter rounds.

Here's why you bother. The guys they're looking at won't cost the team a draft pick. (No sarcasm.)

Follow the trail. They found Tahi under a rock the previous year. Despite the fact that he's now a Viking, as well as a RFA, they've brought him in for another look. So they like him at least THAT much, right? Then they're linked to Tahi's replacement, a player described as a virtual clone....and a likely UDFA. Next up, Rentmeester, a blown up RB with a unique skillset but also a likey UDFA. So as strange as it might sound I think they're looking under rocks for the next Tahi. Stranger still, I think I'm fine with that idea. After all, why pay for a Jeremi Johnson if you're not going to throw a pass in his direction? Or if you prefer, why draft a Tony Fiametta if the FB position won't be featured?

And about that other thing. I say forget the Rentmeester rant.

Instead, how about a new FB named Fui Vakapuna?

Just imagine the cheers.

Seriously, how many of us would have guessed there would be this many posts in a John Kuhn thread? That said, put me in the camp now hoping this FB thing comes down to Naufahu Tahi or Fui Vakapuna.

Vikings considering fullback

March 12th, 2009 – 7:49 PM by Judd Zulgad

As Karl Paymah gets set to make his long-planned visit Friday, the Vikings continue to explore their options in the second-phase of free agency. According to a league source, one player they are looking at is fullback Leonard Weaver. Weaver, who has spent his first four seasons with Seattle after signing as an undrafted free agent, has rushed for 356 yards on 80 carries and one touchdown and has 60 receptions for 547 yards with two touchdowns.

Weaver’s agent, Harold Lewis, told the Philadelphia Inquirer that the Eagles are among “many teams” interested in his client. The Vikings interest makes sense given the fact Naufahu Tahi is a restricted free agent and recently visited with the Cincinnati Bengals. Tahi hasn’t received an offer but the Vikings put the low tender on him. That means while the Vikings would have the right to match any offer by Cincinnati, because Tahi wasn’t drafted out of college Minnesota would not get anything if it fails to match.

The Vikings lost veteran fullback Tony Richardson as a free agent after the 2007 season but quickly signed Thomas Tapeh as a free agent in March 2008 to take his place. Tapeh’s tenure in Minnesota, however, was brief as he was quickly released.

Judging by Lewis’ quotes in the Inquirer, Weaver isn’t looking to sign for a bargain price. “He’s definitely not the average bear,” Lewis said. “He’s an excellent receiver, runner and blocker. The fullback pay scale doesn’t reflect his talents. We’re just trying to find the right situation and the right contract. We can always go back to Seattle, because they’d like to have him back.”

Weaver would be a good fit with the Vikings, or in Philly for that matter, because the Seahawks play a West Coast system similar to Minnesota’s.

Simply put, if you're looking for a Karney you move when the situation dictates you move. But if your targeting a Tahi....it's okay to wait.

Draft Scout Fui Vakapuna News

03/11/09 - BYU Pro day: Bengals running backs coach Jim Anderson was there to work out in conjunction with RB Fui Vakapuna. He worked out, as all the players did, indoors on FieldTurf and could be more of a fullback in the NFL. He measured in at 5-11 1/4, 244 pounds and ran a 4.83 and a 4.84 in the 40. He had a 34-inch vertical and a 9-foot, 2-inch broad jump, 29 bench press reps, a 4.40 short shuttle and a 7.37 three-cone drill. Scouts appeared to be very impressed with Fui Vakapuna during his workout. More than one scout spent extra time with him having him run more individual drills than the others in attendance. Vakapuna looked very good in both his agility and strength drills and could very well end up on an NFL roster as a fullback. – Brandon Gurney, TBS/Gil Brandt, NFL.com

02/15/09 - PRO POTENTIAL: FB Fui Vakapuna struggled with injuries the past few years, but could be a serviceable blocking back at the next level. He's getting some comparisons to former BYU teammate Naufahu Tahi, who has carved out a similar niche in Minnesota

Where'd u get that name?

i disagree about making an offer to Tahi or Kuhn. but if they don't offer a contract, one only hopes we take a FB in round 3-5. they wont find a very good one late in FA, that is the part i disagree with the most.

The good FB's are signed quickly. Karney was on the FA market for all of about 2 days before St. Louis snagged him. The guys left are the players that teams are obviously not searching for. We need an impact FB about as bad as we need a impact C.

The Bengals can get a up-and-coming FB like Tahi or Kuhn and used that 5th round selection on a 4th round caliber guy who someone slipped to the 5th.

good ones get signed quickly if they are UFA. Since Tahi and Kuhn are RFA it takes longer, because there is strategy involved besides money.

No issues going after some of the RFA out there if that's what they want. I'm just of the mindset that says, sure you found an UDFA, but you let him go, so you really didn't think that much of him to start. Is that the trail they are planning on traveling over and over ?? If so, at least go after someone who will probably be in the same boat and brings a better skill set. How about the kid, Jorvorski Lane out of Texas A&M ?? A RB moved to FB who can catch, lay a block, and is that big body guy that can run ??

i would love a blocking FB to be quite honest. Utecht is a pass catching TE, and to free him up we need that extra blocker. Also if we get a blocking FB...kelly isn't gonna be around forever, so the transition for when he leaves or retires won't be so difficult as far as protecting carson.

I don't think we need much from the FB position besides max protection. i dunno...thats just me.

I think one of the more underrated considerations is how important Jeremi Johnson was to the offense. Even after Braham retired, we were able to get yards on the ground behind Jerimi's lead blocking. It's funny the Bengals made him the highest paid FB, which would indicate his importance to the offense, and haven't brought in a quality FB to replace him, since he was cut.

I really like the Quinn Johnson kid at LSU and Brannan Southerland at Georgia could be a nice mid-to-late round pick, too. I'd rather see us sign a FB, so we can use that pick to grab a quality kick returner or DB. We haven't had a player who was a threat to take one back to the house on every kick since Tremain Mack...or at least Peter Warrick.

Speaking of P-Dub, how would you guys rate Peter Warrick coming out of FSU versus Crabtree?

Posted
Not to come off as to much of an ass, but could we keep the P-Dub / Crabtree comparisons in one of the many other Crabtree threads ??

Thanks...

You guys are talking about Crab in the JT/Ghiaciuc thread, so what's the big deal with talking about him here? I get your point, though. Just saying...

no dont forget it...please have some order to the threads. its very annoying to open up a thread and get something off topic.

Yeah, this time of year is difficult to keep things organized in the threads. Sometimes the thread goes off in another direction, but there is good conversation about whatever the topic at hand is. I can relate to conversations in other threads going wayward, but I was attempting to stop an obvious diversion. There was no ill will in the diversion and it was a good thought, just no where near the topic at hand.

I also agree that they must be waiting until later to decide how best to spend some of the money that would be required to make an offer to a RFA that won't get matched. Here's to hoping they get something done.

don't all the threads eventually go off topic?

Some do, but all we are asking is that there should be an attempt made to keep things on topic.

We all do it at some point, but this time of the year seems to increase the off topic mode.

So what about Kuhn huh ??

Here's a hypothetical scenario:

Would you rather have Kuhn or draft Johnson from LSU in the 5th and sign George Foster?

The combined salaries might be pretty close, in comparing the two options.
