I'm hoping for Jason Brown but my mind tells me he may not get the kind of offer that he wants from us.

That said, I think there's a chance we attempt to swing another trade, similar to the Shaun Rogers deal last year. As I said in a previous post, I wonder what it'd take to get Choice from Dallas in a trade. He could be a back of the future for us and could be available.

Kwame Harris is the type of player I could see coming here, after being released today by Oakland. I know they were high on him coming out. We're likely looking at 2-3 2nd tier players, like last year, in addition to signing our own guys like Johnson and hopefully Benson (it looks like they may move on from Crocker. unless he can had for cheap).

If by the type of player, you mean, the biggest f*cking disappointment to play his position the entire season last year, then yeah sure. Harris is absolute garbage.

If it says anything, I would rather have Ghiaciuc play the position than Harris.

Agree that while I would love to get Brown, I really don't see it happening.

Don't agree that the team needs to be giving up any picks at this point in time, but you are right, you never know...

If they sign TJ - which is doubtful in the extreme - I am all in favor of also signing Jason Brown et al

If they do not sign TJ, I don't want them to sign anyone of note, so that we will (likely) earn a 3rd round compensatory pick in next year's draft for losing TJ. If we sign a Jason Brown et al, this will "offset" the loss of TJ in that sense and we lose the compensatory pick

Said another way - signing Jason Brown (or some other roughly equal quality free agent) will (if we lose TJ) not only cost us the cash to sign him, but a third round pick next year.

I am in favor of picking up free agents only every other year, to best ensure we get the compensatory picks on the alternate years.

I see what you are getting at TJ and agree to a point, but feel that what we would get immediately from Brown would offset what we would stand to gain from a comp pick at the bottom of the 3rd round. Our o-line would get a HUGE infusion, increase the passing and rushing offense, and free up THIS years draft...

i've seen you say this a number of times and i don't understand the logic. so you would rather not sign brown so we get a 3.5 round pick next year and then have to use at least our third (probably our second) high in the round to draft a center this year.

brown/this years 2nd > a comp pick next year

even if you want to sign saturday or birk, a center still needs to picked in the coming years and this years rookies are the best to come along in years.

it just doesn't make sense.

I tend to agree with this point. The impact of Jason Brown to this football team is far greater than, say, T.J. and a Pat Sims caliber player. Remember, this would be Mike Brown drafting in the 3rd round with that compensatory pick. The last great, reliable Bengal we drafted in the 3rd round was David Fulcher in '86.

I don't think that the Bengals resigned EGhaiciuc so there is definately a whole there,(well there was a hole there when the matador was playing) but I think they are going to jump in at least a get a C, the OLine is already in shambles are they going to draft a C and trust him to watch their 100mil QB after missing 11 games last year?

Mike Brown is always (well, until he passes) going to be a problem regardless of whether it is making draft picks or lining up free agent visits.

My point is that when TJ walks, imho, you've picked up a 3rd round comp pick, and I would prefer not to lose that pick.

That's all

I don't understand why anyone would have a hard time understanding that, ie having a 3rd round comp pick is better than not having a 3rd round comp pick

So do you just cancel the entire FA signing period because T.J. goes and you think you're in line for a 3rd round comp pick?

Furthermore, the pick that we are awarded will not be based on how Bengals fans view his worth on the open market or the Bengals FA activity alone, but also factoring in his contract value, the number of games he plays in, and his '09 production. All of those are huge question marks that will not be answered until the end of the '09 season.

Not to mention that there is a limit of 6 comp picks per round and there may be 6 other deals bigger than TJ's which would knock his comp pick down to the 4th.

Brown has already stated that while he wants to come back to Baltimore, he has to do what's in the best interest of his family and get the contract that takes care of them. I think he simply goes to thed highest bidder without much thought behind it. There are other teams like Jacksonville that have been linked with Jason Brown's services. I haven't seen one article that included Cincinnati in that thought process, so it's looking pretty bleak.

I Love that. Only $9 mil a year will help his family. I mean s**t what do they want a mansion in palm beach?

Tell that to Stacy Andrews. These guys don't have any guarantees about how long their careers will be...I don't blame any FA for simply going wherever the most money is.

I don't blame him one bit for wanting to go where the money is. I would want every last nickle I could get to ensure my family had everything they needed AND wanted. Homes, cars, vacations, education, to name a few aren't cheap. I'm not saying 9 millions doesn't allow that, I'm merely saying what he does sets the tone for the money he makes and if it were me, I'd want all I could get my hands on...
