This note echoes an on-going discussion on this board:

"An observation from the past couple weeks, as camp drew near: The excitement and enthusiasm among Bengals fans and followers does not appear to be as fervent this year. Maybe it's the disappointment of the past two seasons and the combined 15-17 record. Maybe it's celebrity fatigue brought on by Chad Johnson's complaints about his multi-million contract and the off-field behavior of Chris Henry (good move not to re-sign him). Maybe it's all of the above. Maybe it's the sour economy that has pinched every American."

GEORGETOWN, Ky. -- And they're off, to meetings.

The Bengals reported today to training camp at Georgetown College.

The club announced that five more draft picks signed four-year contracts, second-round receiver Jerome Simpson, third-round defensive tackle Pat Sims, third-round receiver Andre Caldwell, fourth-round offensive tackle Anthony Collins and sixth-round safety Corey Lynch.

Simpson said he was determined to prove all doubters wrong who said the Bengals drafted him too early. "I have a chip on my shoulder," he said.

The team had previously signed fifth-round defensive tackle Jason Shirley, sixth-round tight end Matt Sherry and seventh-round defensive end Angelo Craig and receiver Mario Urrutia.

First-round pick Keith Rivers, the linebacker, remains unsigned.

Left tackle Andrew Whitworth said he would sign a contract extension with the Bengals through the 2013 season.

Tailback DeDe Dorsey said he would be out for at least another week as his groin injury from June 12 minicamp heals further.

Wide receiver Chad Johnson reported on time and said -- nothing.

Thank deity for small favors.
