Sorry to disagree, but the Raven is the coolest nickname in the NFL.

Also, the manner by which the name came to them - famous poet buried in the city had a famous poem called the Raven. Really, so much more interesting and unique than the Broncos, the Jaguars, etc.

Although I must vigorously protest the use of the color purple. Quite grotesque. Although in regards to that color, a pat on the back to anyone who can ascertain why a team drawing inspiration for it's nickname from "The Raven" might pick purple for it's uniforms. Anyone?

Just a guess, but when you see a raven or crow and there's a purple tint to it where the sun hits it from the grease/oil on it's feathers. However, they could have gone with navy blue and black for the same effect. Nothing very scary about purple...

That is a pretty good guess Defender. And although my previous post made it sound like I knew, in retrospect I guess my reason is also a guess! Anyway in the poem the narrator, who pines for his dead girlfriend Lenore, mentions two colors. The black of the raven who visits him, and the purple of the curtains in his chamber. That's the only reason I could come up with to use purple and black for the Ravens colors.
