When Rudi was good...

That is true, but it just seems like the Bengals dont have a running game, I mean how many runningbacks did we have in 07? And even though we MIGHT have some decent runningbacks, there all not vary fast, Im just thinking why cant we get someone speedy on our side, Rudi can be useful on those key 5 yards or less plays, although he does break through sometimes with his pure strength, he doesnt have any speed.

What happened to him?

Nothing that playing in a few more games against the University of Wyoming Cowboys wouldn't cure. Nice tackling there in the Mountain West. I haven't seen tackling that bad since... er... uh... well..., hey our Bengals sure have a great passing game!

We've been over this a bazillion times on this board. When you have a high-powered passing game, you need a Bettis-type back who will guarantee you the tough yards and score on the goal line. We don't need a scatback. And if that's what you want, maybe Glass Perry is back.

Seriously, the flashy stuff isn't what wins games. I can't remember the last team that rode a scatback to a championship.

And no, no damned McFadden because we need a DEFENSE.

I agree. If Rudi gets his YPC back up to previous levels it'll be fine. I'd rather have a Rudi that will give you 3-4 yard every single carry than a Julius Jones who will get f**k all for 5 carries, maybe even negative yardage, and then break a 25 yard run.

Whether Rudi can get back to his former self remains to be seen. I read that he's going to try and put the weight back on. It's not like he has to worry about losing his speed.

on bengals.com marvin was talking about how Rudi went on a diet before last season and lost a ton of weight resulting in him not being the type of player he used to be (lighter with less punch hitting the hole from what i noticed). I dunno if that's gonna effect his offseason this year, but it was something i thought was interesting.

im not talking about a scatback...im talking about someone that gives you more of a threat at breaking one who can still have power.....there are a lot of guys out there like that like jonathan stewart, jamal charles, felix jones....we should have had stephen jackson, so if he would have been behind this line he would have killed the records that rudii set....rudii is just a slow run into the line runner with not a lot of vision dont you want more than just an avg. running back...jim anderson is one of the best running back coaches in the league and i have a lot of respect for him, give him some really talented backs and see what he does

Our line wasn't as bad as people are talking about. We didn't give up that many sacks and every other RB did good besides Rudi. I haven't checked yet but Dorsey and Watson had pretty good averages. The line could improve but Rudi looked terrible and the team played a lot better when Watson was in.

I'd really like to see Dorsey given more of a chance.

We didn't give up alot of sacks because carson was getting rid of the ball early,Oline wasn't horrible but wasn't good enough to be praised about how had record low sacks for the bengals.

Rudi was the toughest RB to tackle in the NFL as little as 2 years ago. That's not just my opinion... they had a poll I remember seeing on ESPN's NFL live. And all 3 talking heads on the show agreed with it. The reason Rudi isn't a top shelf RB anymore is wear on the tires... plain and simple. The Bengals have tried to lessen the wear on two separate occasions with Chris Perry and Kenny Irons. They didn't work out well.

When you are the kind of RB that Rudi is, you need another RB to take some carries. He didn't have one, the injuries started piling up, and now he is no longer seen as a top 10 back. It's not his fault though. RB's who run with his style can't carry the load full time and hope to be long term.

Ask Christina Okoye, Barry Word, Barry Foster, Bam Morris, ect. how long you can play in the NFL as a power back with no help. I know there was another guy for the Chargers I am forgetting it will bug me til I find out.

EDIT: I just remembered Marion Butts

but do you think that the Bengals need to draft another runningback in the draft,

No. Absolutely not, NO. We need a better defense. But let's go ahead and draft wonderboy McFadden and cut Rudi. If he can make it the whole season those yards he gets will help big time as the opposing teams walk over our same ole same ole defense. But hey at least we'll have a few flashy new RB's! Maybe we can just draft sound late rounders for defense since they work so well.

Exactamundo!! The reason Palmer wasn't sacked often was Palmer! The offensive line was HORRID last year! <_< Couldn't provide Carson adequate time to let the pass play develop, couldn't open adequate holes often enough to make the running game a real threat, and we'll only get more of the same next season if they dont DRAFT LINEMEN, LINEMEN, AND MORE LINEMEN!!

Because of the imperfect system of internet forums, I can't tell if you are agreeing with me or not. So just in case you are disagreeing with me...

I just checked the career stats of the men you listed. None of them had more years running the ball at over 100 carries.year than Rudi. Most of them, significantly less. Rudi has amassed over 1,200 carries in 4 seasons of '03, '04, '05, and '06. Bam Morris, Barry Foster, and Barry Word all carried the ball less than 1000 times in their entire careers. Rudi has also already surpassed both Okoye and Butts in total career carries.

He could retire today and he would have lived up to standard of many legendary power backs. So in the event that you are agreeing with me... well put. If you are disagreeing with me - stick that in your pipe and smoke it.

No I am agreeing with you that it is hard for a guy to be a power back in the NFL and continue to compete at a high level. Those guys I listed were considered dominate power backs for a short period of time. Many of them were All-Pros and played for play off teams, yet they fell of the face of the earth very quickly. It's really amazing if you think about it how quickly these guys success disappear.
