IS IT REALLY THAT BAD?

Chad Johnson is NOT the reason the Bengals didnt achieve their goals. It was not Marvin Lewis' fault either. It is the game of football, where the ball never bounces the same way twice. Bengal fans want to trade their BEST wide reciever?? TJ is a slot reciever, he runs short routes and catches more balls because they are essentially hand offs. He does not get double teamed like Chad and he should not be paid like him either. You take Chad from this team and TJ gets the double coverage which equals about 55 catches for TJ.

The Bengals cannot win because they're front seven is lacking talent, their offensive line was pathetic, Rudi Johnson was as an easy tackle, and it was always 2nd and 8 then 3rd and 7 then the opposing defense pinned their ears back. No clutch plays were made all year. Palmer had shaky feet, Chad tried too hard and could not overcome his coaches phsycological approach by telling him he was a worthless blocker. IMO Chad played with the effort that wins championships. His face was planted in the grass numerous times because he was trying to make a play.

Palmer cannot throw on the run to his right. I mean he can but it got knocked down or intercepted. He does not utilize the pump fake because the bengals offense is a timing offense which teams have caught up to. He is still a great QB and will correct his problems. I would like to see him get a TE to bail him out but they take so long to develop as blockers before they play all three downs. I wish Chris Henry would catch a clutch ball. He can make it look so easy but he seems to have concentration issues.

As for the Defense, the bengals better draft big here. They need a leader on the line, a leader among the backers, and one for the secondary. I would not give up on Thurman and the Bengals probably would not want to give him away after they suffered through his maturing process. He may be a case but he also could be in the pro-bowl 8 of the next 10 years. He /was/is that good. Brooks will be a force, but they need a leader. I like #41 he may be the leader in the secondary. Hall gives up TD's but he makes up for them too.

I think the team has talent and they could have an influx like no other in the NFL next year with 11 draft picks and injured players like Chris Perry, Kenny Irons, Tab Perry, Ahmad Brooks, Odell Thurman*, David Pollack** Eric Henderson, Bennie Brazell, Ethan Kilmer, Lemar Marshall, Caleb Miller, and Brandon Williams.

Who knows how our luck will be in 2008. On paper we are not far from putting the best bengal team on the field since 1988.

I agree with your comments about the O-line and D-line play. Improve those areas and the team will improve greatly.

I don't think this team is a "few" players away from being great. This team is about 7-10 players from being "great" and then it will take time to develop that leadership and identity this team so badly needs.

No matter how well the Bengals draft they will not be a "great" team next year. I really don't see the Bengals being anything more than a potential 4-6 seed in the playoffs at best. This team needs to grow up and that takes time. Unfortunately part of the growing up may include the absence of players like Chad Johnson.

Also, as far as "luck" goes, I don't believe in it. I've read articles where Mike Brown references luck. If you rely on luck you end up with a bad to mediocre team for 17 years.

You had me (well, sorta) til you included Chris "Two Carry" Perry and Caleb Miller's name in the "influx of talent".

Well Caleb has special teams talent and he could back up at linebacker for a few plays. Chris Perry has great talent. I would argue that with anyone. He has had buzzards luck. He may be done or he may work his tail off. It is 50/50

My a$$. Perry's talent only extends up to the point where he gets hit. Then he comes up way short. He simply is not durable enough to play in the NFL, and is the biggest bust since the days of David Klinger and Akili Smith. IMHO the Bengals will kick his butt to the curb right after training camp as Irons, Watson, and Dorsey are established as the backfield rotation for the Bengals.

I would thik the team goes to camp with a depth chart of

Rudi Johnson

Kenny Irons

Chris Perry

Kenny Watson

DeDe Dorsey

it will sort out from there....

When I said "backfield rotation", I was implying that as the RB's playing the role of replacing starter Rudi Johnson on 3rd downs, but hey...who knows? Little Miss Chrissy might learn how to take a hit and remain uninjured, regaining some of the form he showed when at Michigan. I seriously have my doubts though.

as do I regarding Perry..

Rudi needs to get back to being a power back.. gain some weight and all 220lbs or so.

if not he may see the exit sign as well.

True. There is a distinct possibility that the Cincinnati offensive backfield may be sans both Rudi and Chrissy come next September.

If it were up to me, we'd cut Rudi at the start of free agency, so he can look for a new team. We'd shop Perry around the league to see if anyone will offer something for him. If no one does, we cut him as soon as he passes a physical. We shouldn't rely on him staying healthy. Injured, he just soaks up cap space.
