When did the Bengals "Jump the shark"

If any of you are Howard Stern listeners, you'll know what I mean by "Jump the shark". If you don't know this term, just check out jumptheshark.com or this FAQ.

When did the Bengals Jump the shark? Or, has the climax and ensuing downhill that follows NOT yet happened?

I believe we jumped the shark when Odell was suspended. Without his talent on defense everything went downhill.

It all started January 13, 1991 with The Curse of Bo.

BTW, this is also a show topic that Lance McAlister has done here locally for a number of years also.

Here are 4 that I propose for nomination:

November 20, 2005 vs. Indianapolis

Bengals lose 45-37 to the Colts in a shootout. The game was moved

from 1pm to 4pm for the national TV audience. Chad proposes to cheerleader

on the sideline. Even though they lost the Bengals are able to hang

with the Colts. It leaves the team with the feeling that they could

have beaten the Colts and they belong with the elite teams in the

league. Bengals also begin using up-tempo, no-huddle offense with

calls at the line by Palmer for an extended period during the game.

December 18, 2005 vs. Detroit

Bengals clinch their first division title since 1988 and first playoff

birth since 1990 with a 41-17 win over the Lions. However the team

would lose their last two regular season games and lose the playoff

game against Pittsburgh. Since this game the team has gone 13-20 (0-3,

8-8, 5-9).

January 8, 2006 vs. Pittsburgh-playoff game

Carson Palmer gets a torn ACL in the second offensive play from

scrimmage. Chris Henry is also injured during the game. The team

would take a lead but the now famous Chad blowup at half-time aids in the

team's second half collapse as the lose 31-17. The Steelers would go

on the win the Super Bowl a month later. Later, the off-field issues of

Odell Thurman and Chris Henry will become a burden for the team along

with concerns about Palmer's recovery heading into the 2006 season.

September 24, 2006 vs. Pittsburgh

The Bengals start the season 3-0 after a road win 28-20 over the

Steelers. Palmer recovers to begin the season at QB but Odell Thurman

gets suspended for the remainder of the season after a DUI incident

involving Chris Henry among others. Thurman was already serving a 4

game suspension to start the season. David Pollack's neck injury and

Tab Perry's hip injury the week before are other things that will

negatively impact the team over the course of the season. The

Bengals have gone 10-17 (5-8, 5-9) since then.

JJakg, I didn't know Lance did this. But I agree with this one which involves Odell being suspended:

Palmers knee injury didn't cause us to jump the shark because he recovered and we started the following season 3-0. When Odell was suspended, that's when it went downhill.

Not that I want you to give up your man-crush on Odell, but I would caution against confusing correlation with causality. Odell's good, but he's not so good that he would turn an 11-5 team into a 5-11 team singlehandedly. No defender is. Hell, Dwight Freeney isn't. Odell also isn't why Chad started acting like a damned baby.

Well, the term "jump the shark" is usually used to refer to the point where something becomes a parody of itself. So I would have to nominate the 2007 offseason, starting with the tagging of Justin Smith and ending with release of Ed Hartwell. In the long Bengals history of do-nothing offseasons, that stretch was probably the do-nothingest. All the team did was watch its depth bleed away while praying that a bunch of banged-up guys would get healthy before opening day.

Had never thought of that before, but...could be.

The Henry/Odell incident was the cause. All I know is that Marvin appears ready to jump into what needs to be done as soon as this season is over. I can't wait.

Huh? Jump into what? Marvin has lost control. He needs to have a steady dose of watching the DI on Full Metal Jacket and then start acting like him. Then he may gain control of these immature millionaires. A few years ago Marvin could have been elected Mayor of Cincy; now he couldn't be elected Dog catcher.

ag, Lance has done Jump the Shark on other topics on his show in the past also. I don't think he has done the Bengals specifically though. The stuff that I posted was from an email that I sent him as a possible show topic back in late October when they were 2-5. Sadly he declined.

It's hard to say when they actually jumped. Is it the last high point? Is it when things began to get stupid? Is it when they hit rock-bottom? (Hopefully we are already there.)

I am torn between the playoff game and the Pittsburgh game last September.

I think playoff loss was so devistating considering the timing of the injury in the game, Carson's new contract the week before, Chad's halftime meltdown and that the Steelers ended up winning the Super Bowl. Plus the fact that we were successful against them in December. I think Chris Henry had his issues in Miami shortly after that game even though he was "rehabbing" his knee at the time. So alot of things happened in a compressed period of time.

The other one is the September game. I think that evening was Odell's infamous car ride with Henry and McNeal that lead to his banishment for the season. They were one game away from getting him back and then he was gone for the rest of the season coming on the heals of Pollack's injury the week before.

Tough choice.

If you want to back that one up just a bit, go back to the New Years Eve game against the Steelers when Shayne shanked the game-winning/would have been a playoff clinching FG at the end of regulation. I think the Steelers scored right away in OT (first play maybe?). Those kind of things can linger all off-season and then that little bit of doubt creeps in. A whole season of work and overcoming adversity down the tubes on one play (and I am not bashing Graham here).

One other one to consider is the San Diego loss. What were we up 28-7? That team would end up 14-2 and we let them off the hook because they were who we thought they were. Anyway I think that is another one where the self doubt and negativity crept in big time.

Now if we get into the way back machine, I have heard of the Curse of Bo but you could call it the Curse of PB because he died later that summer and Mike took over. The Victoria C incident happened in October of 1990 and over the next two seasons many of the accused were let go by the team. The advent of Plan B free agency caught the team flat-footed when they lost Max Montoya among others. I think these three things had a monumental effect on this franchise that hindered us for many years.

From reading this thread, I don't think many of you understand the phrase "jumping the shark."

Please elaborate.....

It's really very simple...

Too bad for Lance, this would've been a great segment for the show!

JJak, you've obviously put some thought into this one, I'm glad I made the post... I agree with you on the two that you debated, its definitely either the playoff loss to Pittsburgh or the September game that was the Bengals moment.

I know it sounds crazy to say that one player (Thurman) is the reason why I think we jumped the shark. Really it's not one player IMO, its the chain reaction that followed after losing Odell... You see Palmer's injury in the playoffs didn't cause us to jump the shark because he recovered from it. Without Palmer this team is NOTHING, everyone knows this. Palmer went down, but he bounced back and was able to start the season. We started 3-0, then we lost Odell and everything went downhill from there.

Making the playoffs for the first time in 15 years was great and it was the beginning of the "climax". I didn't expect us to win the SB that year but I knew we'd make the playoffs. The following season we started 3-0, THIS was the peak of the "climax" IMO.

And Pong WTF are you talking about??? Is that all you do on here is look for some kind of reaction? Do you get off when you see that someone quoted your reply?

If this orginization had a "strong and disciplined mindset", we could overcome alot more than what we do, but weakness from the foundation tends to spread and it absolutely drives me nuts...
