Henry playing some catch-up

WR feeling good on the field

BY SHANNON RUSSELL | SRUSSELL@ENQUIRER.COM

Antonio Chatman likes to tease his buddy Chris Henry about his tattoos - or lack thereof.

Henry's arms are covered with ink that even creeps up his neck. Chatman, who had roughly 17 tattoos at last count, boasts more body art than his fellow wide receiver, and he doesn't let Henry forget.

"He's still slacking," Chatman said, laughing. "I mess with him every day. Tell him he's got to catch up."

It's not the only place Henry has played catch-up.

After serving an eight-game NFL suspension for violating the league's personal conduct policy, the third-year pro has competed in only two games. The 24-year-old West Virginia product also has been dogged by other off-field controversies that have kept him in the spotlight.

But the anxiety he felt during the suspension finally has ebbed, and he's eager to translate his ease to the playing field.

"I feel good out there. I just go out there and have fun and try to make big plays," Henry said.

"Just being in my third year (has helped). As the years go by, you get better because you get a little bit smarter."

Henry's return has provided another outlet for the Bengals' fourth-ranked passing game.

His ability to reel in deep passes, such as Carson Palmer's 37-yard strike for a touchdown against Arizona, sets him apart.

"Now (defenders) will stop sitting on our routes. They've got to restrict everybody now," Chatman said. "That's a plus. It opened up our offense even more."

In his two games, Henry has caught 12 passes for 180 yards and one touchdown.

He credits four weeks of working out at Paul Brown Stadium, and four weeks with a personal trainer, for keeping him in NFL form.

Henry hasn't been sharp on every pass, though. He had two pivotal drops against Arizona, beginning with a miss on fourth-and-6 from the Cardinals' 37-yard line with nine minutes to play.

On second-and-9 from the Arizona 38 with 3:47 to play, Henry let another one slide through his hands.

"I blew the opportunity. I just took my eye off the ball," he said after the game. "I was trying to see what the defender was doing so I could make the catch and run with the ball."

After reviewing film this week, he stood by his assessment. He said he's been working on maintaining eye contact this week in preparation for Tennessee.

In the ninth and 10th games last season, Henry caught four passes for 42 yards and one touchdown. Even without the first eight games this season, Chatman said Henry seems as solid, playing-wise, as he was in the same time frame a year ago.

But football is rarely the topic of discussion between the two players. Chatman said he and Henry, a quiet guy "until he warms up to you," chat about things such as tattoos and, recently, kids.

In the last eight months, Henry has become a two-time father. Both his 8-month-old daughter, Denalya, and a 4-month-old son, Christopher Jr., look like him, Henry said.

"I love kids, and me having two ... I'm a happy person. I love being around my kids," he said.

Henry lives with his girlfriend, Loleini, and baby Chris. He planned to spend Thanksgiving Day with both children, whom he has showered with Bengals gear galore.

As for any more off-field trouble, Henry said he has "to make way for my kids now." His focus is on that.

"It ain't hard. It ain't like I'm looking for trouble. I'm just trying to stay out of the way and be around my kids a lot more," Henry said.

Chatman said the off-field conflicts might have affected Henry before his Bengals return, but he's been the same old Chris since.

"It's like he got through it and weathered the storm and is now ready to go," Chatman said.

do they know it takes 9 month to have a baby, so impossible to have 2 kids only 4 month apart, the kids must have different mother.

Of course. The weird part is they all seem okay with this! Remove Chris Henry's healthy NFL paycheck, and this plays out like an episode off of Jerry Springer! :jerry:

I never have a problem understanding Dimster. He was saying maybe Chris Henry convinced baby momma 2 that the first baby was hers, just like a woman could convince a guy that a baby was his even if she knew it was really someone else's. Dimster!

You should take up a career as a translator for Edward Kennedy or maybe Ozzie Osbourne.

Am I the only one here that has problems understanding what Dimster is trying to say?

He sounds as if he is plastered in everyone of his posts.

Maybe Spain moved to Arizona.

1152pm on the Friday night after Thanksgiving..................I have my own hypothesis.

A Cleveland Plain Dealer editor took Lebron James to task for having two children out of wedlock

with his live-in girlfriend. She questioned his unwillingness to marry her when he demonstrated

no qualms with having children with her. She then brought up his being a poor role model to the

black community in this regard and heaped statistics/anecdotal problems with single parenthood in

Cleveland and the US.

Not surprisingly she was quickly villified for not understanding the lifestyle of the black community by

other paper editors and local commentary. Many talked about how great a father Lebron is to his children.

I thought she brought up some good points. Maybe I'm old-fashioned but I think you should ideally be married

prior to having children. It's also not a racial thing. I find Matt Leinart's and other out of wedlock children

just as disturbing.

Why does it matter if two people are married before they have kids? As long as both parents love the child and care for it, what's the big deal? Why should it matter?

I think your old-fashioned too... Marriage isn't working anymore, so why get married? The divorce rate is what, over 50%... 50/50 chance of losing half of everything I own??? I think I'll just continue to live with my girlfriend and raise our 16 month old daughter the same way I have. American values aren't what they used to be!

About Chris, I'm glad to see that he's stepping up as a father. This really shows what type of man he is. The story could very well be the other way around and it could be about some girl coming after Chris for support. Good job ON and OFF the field Chris!

I know this is a football board but I need to reply.

My comment didn't mean to indicate a religious preference. But by saying ideally a couple should be

married before having children, I more meant that they should come from a committed, long term

relationship that hopefully continues throughout the child's life.

Far too many children born out of wedlock don't have a stable family life. The newspaper article

pointed out the hard realities of the life faced by many children in this circumstance.

I applaud all parents having children that give them a loving and caring home. The marriage certificate isn't

all important, however listing both parents on the birth certificate to ensure the child's rights are

guaranteed is vital in my view. Not owning up to the responsibility of your children is among

the worst things a person can do. The state should ensure that parents support their children.

A man having children by various mothers scattered across the country is deplorable.

I can't see how one can be a truly effective parent in that situation. If one is rich

enough he may be able to financially support several households, but I doubt if

he could do everything demanded in good parenting. There simply isn't enough

time in the day.

Well, what happens when it's four people?

And four kids.

Spread over three households.

Or is it four?

Because they say Chad has fathered four children.

With three baby mamas.

Now don't get me wrong because I'm not hating.

Not blaming hip-hop either.

Just saying.

:lmao:
