The perfect recipe for 8-8

This team will rise and fall against their level of competition. The offense had chances to put this away, but didn't. The special teams is a disaster, and the defense does just enough to lose. The offense will win a few and lose a few. They'll beat the Steelers and lose to the Cardinals. It's back to the same old, same old.

I just believe 8-8 because the D is to weak, and not very good...And the O is already starting to feel the pressure from needing to score all the time(CPalmer with 2 INT's)...There are going to be games when the O struggles and the D will not hold up...

and until Levi and Willie return, the offense is totally one dimensional as there is no running game.

That is my single biggest concern. I can't imagine the running game will be this terrible for much longer, but without vast improvement and soon, the offense will crap out every week.

They will always under-achieve. It's what they've done since Mike Brown took over, as we all know. It starts with the way they draft and handle free agency, manage their roster and salary cap.

The Bengals' are now 1-5 in their last six regular season games, 9-13 beyond that.

They are not a good team, haven't been for a while now, and are trying to live solely off the arm of Palmer and the hands of CJ and TJ.

They're probably the most undisciplined team in the league - 10 penalties and 4 turnovers yesterday? That's terrible folks.

This coaching staff needs to fired sans one or two (Brat and Zampese), and that includes Marvin, who's pretty much lost this team over time, this off-season. Of course, we know that won't happen, but I really have lost all faith in that man and can see why he was passed over for so many years.

Brown never does anything bold, shrewd, or necessary like other teams do, to win games. They take the easy route in free agency (just re-sign guys they control and find average players they don't have to compete for).

I don't see it changing unless they have a lucky year like 2005 again some day. It gets old. Thank god for college football, which has become more entertaining for me.

Shula, sad to say, but your starting to sound like you know what the hell your talking about! This is getting pathetic. Every gotdamn defensive coach should be fired, starting with the DB's coach.

Shula is right about the rot at the top. But Lets not forget the missing man formation the Bengals are fielding in 2007:

Pollack, Henry, Perry, Irons, Odell, Rucker, Keiwan Ratliff a 2ed rounder in 2004 all 3rd round picks or higher and non contributing in 2007. I don't think any team in the NFL has had less productivity in their draft than the Bengals.

They'll beat the Steelers and lose to the Cardinals. It's back to the same old, same old.

Sadly, this is true. There was a turning point early in Marvin's tenure when it seemed like you could finally count on the team not beating itself through a lack of discipline, special teams gaffes, poor coaching decisions, and half-hearted efforts. I don't remember exactly where that turning point was, but somewhere along the way, I started to believe they'd win close games and not piss them away.

Now, it's back to the bad old days: my wife and I fully expected them to blow the game yesterday, and they did. And they'll continue to. I'm 41 and have been a Bengals fan for as long as I can remember -- probably back to about '75 or so -- but I'm about ready to jump ship for good. Now that I no longer live in Cincinnati, it'll be a lot easier.

Don't kid yourself, hometown dirt is hard to wash off. I haven't lived in the area since 1978 with only 9 seasons of Bengals under my nails. Look at me now, still a Bengal fan. Even during the Dark Ages from about 1990 until Carson Palmer and Marvin Lewis while I lived 2000 miles away.

I'm not sure why some suddnely think the Bengals play down to their competition? Last season they lost one game to a team that finished under .500 (Tampa Bay). This year they've had one such game, but I wouldn't call it a trend at all. It was in 2004, but they grew out of that before the playoff season.

I'm guessing it's due to an overall level of frustration based on the finish to last season and the start of this season. It is, however, a long season and a lot of things can happen. I'm not big on guessing game scores, or season records because so many things happen (odd injuries, turnover sprees, etc.) that the only thing I really can do is try to determine whether the team is getting better or worse on balance. Seattle.....well, I thought the team looked more like what I'm used to. Inconsistent d, with some good plays and some breakdowns (and a generous helping of missed plays by the Seattle passing game -- this could've been way uglier IMO). Offense looked generally good, but failed to close the deal in the red zone too many times. I was surprised that we were in it at the end with all the injuries. The Hasselbeck pass-receipt-fumble-unreviewable (for a reason that absolutely makes no sense to me and has never been uttered in the history in instant replay) BS play would have iced this game for us. That we were in a position to win it in one of the hardest places to win currently in the NFL says to me that the team is not in complete shambles, that the coaching staff has not "lost" the team and that there is some reason to think this team should improve. I can't tell everybody not to jump ship and go watch hockey or whatever because it's another loss and we have every reason to expect an ugly weekend next week too. Go ahead -- give up on your team. As for me, I will continue to watch, hope and probably get my heart broken, but it beats the hell out of baseball season. I also think that we just need to survive the first half of the season and that if we can beat Pitt. the first time things are not nearly as bleak as everybody thinks. Maybe I'm nuts, but I'm not jumping ship.
