cincyhokie
For what it is worth someone at the game last night spotted Willie in gym shoes and not the boot.....but I have no idea if that is a good sign or no sign.

Not too much of a surprise that it was performed by Dr. James Andrews in Alabama...Looks like he took a que from Carson, and when it comes to surgery such as theirs, it best to get the "Duck out of Fodge." It was mentioned during the New Orleans game that Drew Bree's surgery was performed by...(wait for it)....Dr. James Andrews. So I guess the only conclusion you armchair doctors can reach is that the Saints medical staff is as bad as the Bengals. Then again, Dr. Andrews is one of the most respected specialists in the entire country and has performed surgeries on players from almost every NFL team. Oh, and the article posted in this thread about the Eagles OT having ankle surgery mentions that the surgery was performed by a specialist, which might come as a shock to those of you who bothered checking where Philadelphia ranked on that damning 7 or 8 year old list that Hoosier unearthed. After all, why would a team rely upon specialists when your team medical staff has a perfect 100% satisfaction rating from players?

DC_Bengals_Fan
It's ridiculous. You have human assets that you pay $100M/yr + benefits, and more than that tied up in guaranteed contracts over the next few years. Would it *not* be worth spending a little more on good doctors who know what the hell they're doing? Are you suggesting that Willie Anderson can't afford the opinion of a specialist? I don't know about anyone else, but if I make my living with my body I take a very active role in it's medical care. For example, the Bengals medical staff may be unanimous in their opinion of how to repair and rehab my hypothetical knee injury, but nobody could stop me from calling Dr. James Andrews for a second opinion that will almost assuredly take precedent over anything else I've been told. More importantly, I'm almost certain that if I demand to see Dr. Andrews the Bengals will pay his bill. No, for Chrissakes, I'm not (where did I imply that?). Willie Anderson, trusting soul that he is, may not have realized the need to get a second opinion, and thus didn't. Clearly, after Marvin suggested it, he did get one. The problem is that Marvin seems to have more medical wisdom than the doctors, which calls their competence into question. And if they're incompetent, it would call into question whether or not they're the low-ball team Mikey hired on the cheap (and no, I don't care when they were hired). While you might take an active role in your medical care (and I do as well), your average football player might make the msitake of trusting the people who went to med school to decide for him. I'd bet he won't make that mistake again. Let's hope the damage done is minor.

First, since so many of you seem adamanat about questioning the level of competence of physicians I have to ask what qualifications you have? For the record, I believe Hoosier works in the publishing field and Kid Steakhouse mops floors at a fast-food eatery. What say you? Second, I'm betting Marvin Lewis doesn't have more medical wisdom than the team doctors. Far more likely is the idea that Lewis has more common sense than Willie Anderson, and realized that a 2nd opinion would be a smart thing to get. In fact, it would have been a smart thing to get months ago, right? But Anderson didn't bother doing that, prompting you to somehow blame someone other than Anderson. Oddly, the target of your anger is the man who would have paid for the 2nd opinion without complaint. Third, I care as little about when the team doctors were hired as you seem to. All I attempted to point out is how old was the ESPN article that Hoosier posted and remind readers that there have been changes in the medical staff...something that should call into question nearly everything stated in the article, with two glaring exceptions. Those being, the fact that every player has the right to get a 2nd opinion from any doctor he choses...paid for by the team, and the point made about how difficult it was for ALL teams to find expert medical help, dictating the ever increasing use of specialists.
