Mock

Recommended Posts

I cannot express enough how desultory the mock game was. Too hot to do much of anything. No hitting. No Carson. No TJ. Mostly just slight contact and checking fits.

The more interesting event was easily Friday night. Check that video and you are pretty up-to-speed.

I concur. I can't even tell ya how hot it was there. Plus 24 of the guys weren't even playing, a large majority starters. You didn't miss much.

Ludwig offers this observation...I thought it worth a note since it's basically the first mention of Jeff Rowe I've seen. I've been wondering if his conspicuous absence from camp reports was a bad sign...

QB Rowe shines; Johnson struggles

With Palmer resting, Bengals quarterbacks get snaps in 33-17 mock game.

GEORGETOWN, Ky. — Cincinnati Bengals rookie quarterback Jeff Rowe took the snap, rolled right and let it rip.

His spiral sailed 46 yards, nestling into the hands of wide receiver Jesse Holley, setting up the first of three Shayne Graham field goals.

Rowe stayed cool in the 93-degree heat, leading the underdog Black team to a 33-17 victory over the Orange in front of 8,700 spectators at Georgetown College's Toyota Stadium on Saturday.

With starting quarterback Carson Palmer taking the day off as planned, the glorified touch-football affair known as the Black-Orange Mock Game gave the backups more snaps in preparation for Thursday's preseason opener at Detroit.

"Every day's big. Every minute's big," Rowe said. "The coaches just want to see the things they've taught me. The more you talk the language of the offense, the more it's nailed into you. You're into the game more, and it becomes easier."

While Rowe helped himself by completing seven of 12 passes for 76 yards and no interceptions, No. 2 quarterback Doug Johnson (8-of-18 for 102 and 3 INTs) struggled without starting wideouts Chad Johnson and T.J. Houshmandzadeh, who were resting.

Reggie McNeal didn't do Johnson any favors, dropping three passes, including Johnson's first rocket. McNeal was wide open on a right-to-left slant over the middle that would've gained 30 yards, but he coughed it up.

"Doug got a chance to run what we thought would be more of the first offense," head coach Marvin Lewis said. "But with all the receivers being out, he didn't get a chance to do that. It was still a good thing for him."

Linebacker Ed Hartwell, cornerback Brandon Williams and cornerback T.J. Wright had interceptions, and Hartwell stopped Orange tailback Kenny Watson for no gain on third-and-goal at the 1.

"That's what I like to do — come downhill and hit you," Hartwell said.
