Closing in fellas (and occasional lady).

Sounds like ML has a good handle on the themes to strike as camp gets underway. He's reserving comment on injured players and their progress, so tea leaves will still need to be read re: JJ, Madieu, and others...

OK, maybe some of you townies can help me out here....

...where the hell is this 'hot seat' crap coming from??? To me, it seems stupid. Mikey has, for good or bad, stuck with coaches through much more than this. I started hearing some of the hot seat stuff from minor members of the national press who were speculating - not reporting - and assumed it was total crap.

Is there something to it in the local press? To me it seems like idiots starting crap for no reason.

In most NFL cities where standards are higher, a coach with only one winning record in 4 seasons and no playoff wins would be considered on the hot seat going into his fifth year, ecspecially when he has a top 5 QB at the helm for most of them.

The "hot seat" part of things has more to do with the city's fans turning on the coach after this season, if they don't have a winning record, at least.

I see no problem with that, and feel expectations to win are fair.

That's a little contrary...in most situations, the 3 'non-winning' records aren't usually 8-8. I'd say that not many cities that produced 0 winning seasons in 12 years would fire a guy who goes 5-over 0.500 in his first 4 years.

That's just me.

This whole "hot seat" stuff IS coming from national know-it-alls. It is fair to assume though that the fans desperatly want at least a playoff win.

I think if we had a top 10 defense we could expect more than 1 playoff win. However i think it highly unlikely that our defense goes from the worst 2 or 3 to top ten.

I can definitely see an 8-8 season or worse having the fans losing much of that "trust" they had in Marvin.

Sure. This team is set up to do better than that. I was just wondering, mainly, whether there is really a 'hot seat' mentality among:

1) The local media

2) National media with actual sources (as opposed to making crap up)

3) The fans

4) Mike Brown

It definitely seems unfair to me to toss Marvin under the bus for any questionable picks that most people seem to believe are Mike Brown's.

If, on the other hand, he ends up going down due to his inability to develop a defense and his DCs being complete idiots, well, that would be different.

I don't see it happening though. D can't be worse than last year, offense should be stacked again.

It's an old trick. ML claims to be on the 'hot seat' to lead you to believe that Cincinnati conducts business just like other NFL teams. We all know that is not the case. The reality is that Cincy Head Coaches enjoy extended stays in exchange for keeping their mouths shut about the ridiculous front office situation.

You wouldn't think so being ranked last year at #28 (I think?) but that does leave four spots below available. And seeing how Marvin Lewis has under achieved (he was supposed to be a defensive "guru" remember?) with the Bengals defense each and every season he's been here, it could very well happen. IMHO all it'll take for the Bengals to make a run deep into the playoffs is a solid, middle of the pack defense.

Agreed, but on paper at least (I realize that means crap, but this is July and that's all we have), the D looks better than last year anyway. Myers will in all likelihood be an upgrade over Adams, and Peko will be one year better (and he was pretty good last year). If we can get some decent reps out of the gruesome twosome of Thornton and Robinson, I'll take it. LBs should be better overall - Jeanty is (I think) the real deal, Brooks should be ready to contribute, and we still have Landon who can play any spot. Odell would be icing, but we don't need him. LB will be weak, but not as bad as last year (I've never been sold on Simmons anyway). CB will be better simply by default, although if JJs foot doesn't heal well that could be an issue.

I think that's enough to give us the 20th ranked D, with possibly some positive surprises.

Marvin inherited the worst team in football and hasn't had a losing season since he's come here. He only underachieved once, overachieved twice and went 8-8 with a first time starting QB. If we don't get double digit wins this year then yes I think he's on the hotseat for next year but not at all this year.

Mike Brown is the only one that pulls the trigger on getting rid of him anyway and you know he doesn't have a quick trigger when it comes to that.
