I wonder why the Bengals listed him as a center we have so many centers as it is; I have a fealing he's either going to get cut or moved to the practice squad come regular season.

Well, maybe I read too much into it, but the team did cut Wilkerson only after seeing Santucci work out this spring so they must think pretty well of him. Also, who did we have behind Guychick and Stepanovich? Bobbie Williams? We needed a better 3rd string option.

Good point. I forgot they cut Wilkerson.

Hobson just updated the story and said that Rowe and White are very close, and will most likely be in for the start of camp.

Looks like Irons and Hall won't make it in time unless there's a big surprise this morning.

Right. Because why would you want two guys as unimportant to the team's success in 2007 to be in on time? It would simply waste training camp food. Good planning, as usual, from the front office...

THAT is the perfect response, mem!

Hey Hoosier -

Something doesn't make sense - I actually liked Mr Next Big Thing ?!? Maybe it's a cousin?

Question -

It's probably position specific, but when does a late signing go from an inconvenience to a problem to a major problem?

Well, if you're going to blast our front office, then you might want to take some time to blast 90% of the NFL's front offices while you're at it. How many 1st rounders have been signed again?

If it turns into another David Pollack ordeal, then I'll join your side...

That reminds me of one of my moms favorite sayings: "If everyone else jumped off the Brooklyn Bridge, would you?" In other words, just because everyone else is doing something dumb doesn't mean you have an excuse to do it, too.

Mem's point is sound. The Bengals are counting on Hall and Irons to play significant roles in 2007, especially with Chris Perry hurt (again) and Deltha O'Neal pouting. Other teams have managed to get deals done without having the "slot" firmly established. There's no reason the Bengals can't do that as well, and no reason not to rap them when they don't.

What was especially dismaying to me was to see this quote from Marvin buried at the bottom of a DDN piece yesterday (emphasis added):

"We don't anticipate any problems and we'll be fine one way or another. The guys will all come to their senses and get here, and understand that if they miss time, you don't get it back."

So here we go. Even though the slots haven't been firmly established in the top couple rounds, and historically the FO hasn't moved until they are...it's all the greedy players/agents' fault!

I think we all know there's plenty of blame for both sides...front office and players/agents. That's why all of the front office blasting this early bugs me. I'm guessing that if any of the people here complaining worked in the front office, they'd end up doing pretty much the same thing.

It's not a simple matter of the front office just being stubborn for stubborn's sake.

I'm not blasting the front office per se.

But, dammit, when everyone can see how important Hall and Irons (and White) are to the team's success in what pretty much everyone knows is a prime year in "the window of opportunity", maybe the front office could have nutted up, done as Hoosier suggests and not waited until the ink was dry on every contract in the slots around those guys before getting something done, for a change.

Whether I want to admit it or not, those kind of signals, small or not, from the front office, do help to set a tone. And, in a year as potentially good as this one, there is simply no reason to f**k away any time from camp for guys that are going to be a big part of the team's hoped for success. There just isn't.

And the apparent lack of urgency from the front office in general this week has been silly. Absolutely lame that not until yesterday did they get around to locking up even the 7th round picks. Waiting for those to slot too? At some point it really IS stubborness for stubborness' sake...

I share your frustration, but they've got to think about the long-term.

At this point agents for the higher draft choices are trying to score a ridiculous deal to help them get more clients for the future. "Hey, I got this guy x million more than the avg. for his round! Sign with me and I'll help you get the same!"

If the front office gives in to any of those demands, then it adds up in terms of money, and it will also sets up a precedent that makes future negotiations more difficult.

Of course, NFL teams are doing the same on the opposite end by offering less than they know they'll end up paying. If teams didn't do that, though, and gave a realistic # up front, then the agent and player will get frustrated when the team refuses to go any higher. At least, by shooting low, they can give the impression of being generous when they raise the #s at a later point.

Maybe they could just make more of an effort to speed up the process in general...I don't know. It's hard to say as a fan only getting information through scattered media reports. Maybe they're working harder at it than we realize, and then again, maybe not. *insert shrug emoticon here*

I blame the agents as much as the FO. The NFL set up a "slotting" system to hasten the signings of draft picks and the agents are constantly looking to one up the previous deal made. If it's a holdout, it's the agent and ultimately the player that causes it IMO.

Nice work front office, to get everyone but Hall in. That's the correct message.

Now, to Hall. Get it done. No one signed between 16 and 25, but Hall is 18, so they should be able to project that spot fairly accurately. No reason to make him wait over a few thousand dollars. Get to it.

Actually, Aaron Ross CB (NY Giants) at #20 signed last night, so that makes your point even stronger. Sign Hall now.
