HoosierCat
From Lonnie Wheeler's blog...This One Belongs to the Bengals (sort of)A survey conducted by NKU has determined that more Cincinnatians consider themselves Bengals fans than Reds fans. That’s a little surprising, but not that much. Like most, we’re a fickle town, and this sort of thing probably has a lot to do with timing. Also, since the poll was conducted online, it leaves out a large part of the older segment, which is likely to be Reds-oriented. Anyway, here’s the release from Patty Leesemann of RightSource Communications Group:An online poll on entertainment in Gr. Cincinnati was recently conducted by Northern Kentucky University. Three questions from the survey were posed to respondents about the Bengals v the Reds. When questioned about team preference,*15% of Gr. Cincinnati residents categorized themselves as diehard Bengals fans.*10% are diehard Reds fans. When questioned about team performance,*40% of Bengals fans reported being satisfied with the team's 8-8 performance last season.*Only 20% of Reds fans were satisfied with the team's 80-82 season last year. With these results you'd think that respondents would choose Cincinnati as a football town...not so. When forced to make a choice between baseball or football: 46% stated that Cincinnati is a baseball town, 38% said Cincinnati is all about football and the remainder had no opinion.Methodology*796 residents of Greater Cincinnati (including N. Ky. and Dearborn County, Ind.) were surveyed online during March. Respondents were over 18 years old. *Margin of error +/- 3.5%. *The study was supervised by Northern Kentucky University Associate Professor of Marketing Dr. Aron Levin, director of NKU's Marketing Research Partnership Program.http://frontier.cincinnati.com/blogs/lonni...rt-of.asp#linksWow, though: 40% of Bengals fans were satisfied with 8-8? Expectations, it seems, remain low...
JoePong
Not a surprise. The Reds are a joke of a franchise who have no hope to even compete for anything for the forseeable future. Their roster is just amazingley awful. And it's been like that for a while. They are what the bengals were during the 1990s.

Oh, the Reds are surely not going to be competing for a world championship anytime soon, but a team that finished within a game of .500 only a year ago is simply not to be compared to what the Bengals were in the 90s. I still love 'em both!

I guess JoePong would have been happier if the Reds had lost 120 games last season. I am just as frustrated as the next Reds fan, but I am thankfull that "amazingley awful" roster didn't accomplish what the Tigers did just a few years ago. Sad really and to be honest it's pretty annoying.A school doesn't get the name of No Knowledge College for no reason at all. haha seriously man... In '05 so many Bengals fans sprouted (everywhere obviously) but I had somewhat close fans that were all of the sudden 'big' Bengals fans and I had no idea they even liked football. Campus is loaded with Bengals jerseys during the fall, I only saw a few people decked out in Reds stuff on opening day. Winning = fans, that's for sure. For me it will always be the Bengals, I just like football more. Even in '99 when the Reds were in the WC chase down to the playoff game I enjoyed watching the Bengals more. I just like the balance in football and the immediate impact of players as well as the bigger impact that coaches have.

JoePong
Well, the Reds have had what...2 or 3 playoff appearances in the last 30 years??? That is gawdawful by any standard. The Bengals were bad in the 90s, but when is the last time the reds even finished .500? What is the most consecutive seasons that the bengals had a losing record? I doubt there is much difference. The Reds finished over .500 in 1999. They missed the playoffs after losing a tie-breaker game (I think against the Phillies) at the end of the regular season. HairOnFire
Wow, though: 40% of Bengals fans were satisfied with 8-8? Expectations, it seems, remain low... That's one way to look at it. Another might claim that only 40% of Bengals fans were savvy enough to know how often a flood of injuries cripples any teams playoff hopes. ArmyBengal
Obviously this poll would go wither way depending on how either franchise is doing (win/loss record)... If the Bengals were still the Bengals of the 90's and the Reds were a yearly playoff team, this poll would be DRASTICALLY different. Being from Cincinnati, I follow and LOVE both the Bengals and the Reds just because by the time I was 4 I learned to support the home team REGARDLESS of record... Well, that and how much Cleveland sucks !!!Now, if I had to choose between the Reds and the Bengals, that would be very hard. I love the Reds and going to a ballgame to watch and drink a few cold ones is a great time and the season lasts a long time. The Bengals however, have been almost an obsession of mine... I was at the AFC Championship game with -59 wind chill and went to the SuperBowl that year and I was only 10... Sooooo, I would have to go with the slightest of all edges to the Bengals if I had to choose. God help me if I ever had to though and love having both teams in Cincy !!!WHODEY !!! Jet23
It's really not a Bengals / Reds debate. The NFL simply blows the doors off of MLB. In about two months the two most coveted records in baseball are going to belong to Pete Rose and Barry freaking Bonds. If that doesn't scream dysfunctional, nothing does.Cincinnati is, without a doubt, a football and college basketball town. 20 year ago, it was baseball - hands down. So what happened to all of the Rose Reds? They died.
BengalszoneBilly
I still love 'em both!As do I, but I truly love the Bengals more! Then again, I always prefered football over baseball anyway.
JoePong
The Reds best player is a guy who hasn't played in like 3 years and has never played above the single A level. That's all you need to know about this sorry-ass franchise.

Repeating a one-liner that was read somewhere about a 'bigtime prospect gone bad' does not a knowledgable fan make.

I attended UofL for 2 plus years and NKU for 2 years. As far as Arts & Sciences go, NKU was much tougher to get high grades in than UofL. I was on scholarship at both schools. I also can speak (although not extremely well), 2 foreign languages thanks to attending NKU.You get out of a secondary school what you put into it.
