TJJackson
I'm going to use this thread to track a guesstimate - based on the fact that it appears the Bengals are bound and determined to see a large net loss of free agents - of what compensatory picks the Bengal will be awarded in the 2008 draft.I'll keep editing this first post as we lose more free agents (expected) and sign free agents (yeah right!)It should be understood that the picks range from r3 to r7, there are 32 of them, and no team can accumulate more than 4 of them. I believe there are 8 picks awarded in each round, so to get a r3 pick, the loss has to be one of the 8 biggest. The loss of Adalius Thomas by the Ravens is (for example) arguably the biggest signing this season, but Steinbach was rated in the top 10 free agents (some rated him as high as #3) by most publications I reviewed, and therefore I consider his loss likely to earn us a r3 pick that said, on with the guesstimatePick 1 - r3 - comp for the loss of Eric Steinbach (Cleveland) - no offsetting FA signed by Bengals Pick 2 - r7 - comp for the loss of Kelly Washington (New England) - no offsetting FA signed by BengalsPick 3 - r6 - comp for the loss of Kevin Kaesviharn (New Orleans) - no offsetting FA signed by BengalsPick 4 no awardNote: One could easily argue a 6 for KW and a 7 for KK. It's a flip of a coin for me, and bottom line, the same end resultOffsets - loss of Tony Stewart and Marcus Wilkins offset by signing of K Watson and R KellyNot applicable - loss of Brian Simmons - Brian was cut a day or two before FA startedNot applicable - any RFA loss - the material I've read indicates that *only* UFA gain/losses are considered for this purposeNot sure why the Bengals didn't just let someone sign Brian Simmons away instead, thereby earning the possibility of another pick. Then again, the general management of the Bengals leaves much to be desired, even in the Marvin era.

JPW
Offsets - loss of Tony Stewart and Marcus Wilkins offset by signing of K Watson and R KellyI think that it is a matter of free agents lost offset by free agents gained.I don't believe that signing your own free agents is counted as gains, since they were your players in the first place, and as such are not counted as offsets for the free agents that you lose. But I could be wrong .... TJJackson
As I read it, UFAs are for this purpose UFAs, regardless of where they leave and where they sign. all 4 of those players were UFAs, available to any tam (including us) and their overall loss\gain just about offsets, imhoOn the other hand, if you're right, I could see another r7 pick for the loss of Wilkins and Stewart - but for now, in the absence of a definitive understanding on this, I'm calling those 4 offsetting
Stripes
I hope K-dub has a Pro Bowl season. Hell, with that contract, he might not even need to have a great year to earn us a pick.

TJJackson
edited in a r6 pick for KK. Not a bad return at all for a hard working dependable guy who we originally got for a 100 dollar waiver pickup fee back in 2001.Need I mention that Housh was a r7 pick, and Tom Brady was a r6 compensatory pick? :-)
HoosierCat
Offsets - loss of Tony Stewart and Marcus Wilkins offset by signing of K Watson and R KellyI'm gonna bet that in the NFl's comp system that will count more against us than for us (it's a No. 2 and a special teamer vs. No. 3 and a starter). Hopefully Wilkins gets the chance on D the Falcons promised him and does well, eh?
TJJackson
One can hope :-)I think a 3, a 5, and a 7 are not at all out of the question at this point.

redsbengalsbucks
I'm more interested in what comp picks we will get this draft. Kitna was a major loss with the season he put together in DET.
JPW
I'm more interested in what comp picks we will get this draft. Kitna was a major loss with the season he put together in DET.A poster over on the KFFL boards, who has a good track record with this, is projecting that we will get a sixth round comp pick for losing Kitna.
