Porter to the Dolphins

Thank god.

Every time I heard "the Bengals have an interest in Porter" I cringed.

With ya. Especially seeing the price that it ended at, I cannot see how anyone would have wanted the Bengals to spend that level of $ on this one.

No way, especially given how LBs who leave LeBlow's system out there tend not to perform at the same level with other teams. Kind of like Denver RBs.

You got it. I can recall but two or three players to leave the Steelers defense and do well: Hardy Nickerson, Chad Brown, and Rod Woodson. The first two were money-related, and Woodson was aging and coming off injury. Beyond that, the rest were pretty much non-existent ... much like Porter will be.

One less topic to talk about, now we can move on from the assinine conversation of him playing for the Bengals. Good luck with that Miami, he will be a free agent again in about two years when Miami cuts him for not playing up to his contract. The most feared man in the NFL, Sports Illustrated need there printing license revoked for that one.

He was "most feared" -- every fanbase was worried that their team might sign him only to see him go in the tank. :o

Have to disagree with all of ya, I think with the addition of Porter to go with Jason Taylor, and Zach Thomas, the Dolphin D just got dramatically better!!!! And I do think that Porter would have been the leader that the Bengals D so desperately needs!!!

Please, like I said Joey Porter only shows up against terrible competition if you have decent tackles he disappears. Joey Porter was not the guy we need at that price, you wonder why Steelers fans were happy to see him go I can just here the chorus of chants..............overrated, overrated.

So now Joey Porter is a Miami Dolphin, and people want to know how much better he makes the team's defense. To be honest, I'm not sure because I'm not sure what Joey Porter has left.

Look, he has damaged knees and has missed portions of the past two training camps because of surgeries. He turns 30 this month. And while he can still drop into coverage and defend the run, he doesn't appear to be the pass rusher he once was.

OK, OK, so he had seven sacks last season. All but one occurred in three games ... two sacks apiece against Oakland, Miami and Tampa Bay.

In two starts against Cincinnati's Levi Jones he had no sacks. In two games against Baltimore he couldn't solve Jonathan Ogden or Adam Terry. Porter didn't beat San Diego rookie Marcus McNeill for a sack. He didn't beat Jacksonville's Kalif Barnes for one, either.

I think you get the idea. Porter beat up on the mediocre pass blockers and struggled with the others -- and, maybe, just maybe, that's the start of a trend.

I guess what I'm saying is I don't know that the Dolphins can count on Porter to be the playmaker he was when the Steelers cut him loose off the edge. In those days, he could beat any offensive lineman, and he beat them so consistently he was the Steelers' 2002 defensive co-MVP, a three-time Pro Bowler and a two-time All-Pro.

But if he was invaluable to the Steelers do you honestly think they would've let him walk? I mean, they were on the hook for a $1 million roster bonus. Big deal. Porter was scheduled to make $4 million in salary this season, too. OK, I pay that if I have someone who can make game-changing plays.

Porter could. And he made them again and again and again. But not lately. That's one of the reasons Pittsburgh let him walk. I suspect fear of a contract holdout might've been another. In any case, the Steelers figured they needed the cap room more than they needed Joey Porter. That tells me something about what he has left.

Show me the Steeler fan who was happy to see Porter go and I'll smack him upside the head. What kind of a moron is happy to see a team leader and solid contributor leave? Sure, he seemed to lose a step last year, but he's definitely still a very good LB. And age isn't even much of an excuse, because Adalius Thomas is the same age and everyone wanted him, Clark Haggans is a few months older and not as good as Porter but we kept him. The problem was that he was due $5 million, only had 1 year left on his contract, and he wanted an extension, probably for about $1 million more, and the Steelers figured, "screw it, we'd rather not make too much of an effort to keep a guy who lost a step last year." Plus alot of it I think is symbolic. Porter was so loyal to Cowher, and now that Tomlin is here it's like his way of saying "this is my team now". I hate to see Peezy go, but thank God he's not in stripes or purple.

Go to Stiller.com and you will see a bunch of them who are happy to see him go. I'm in the military and I work with seven, count them seven Steeler fans and all of them are happy that the Steelers did not waste money on him. The Steeler fans were telling me before the season was at the half way mark that he should get the axe at the end of the season. You might want to talk to your fellow Steeler fan's because apparently you did not get the memo buddy. Bengals fans can agree with you, thank God he's not in a Bengal's uniform being over paid like that. Tomlin cut him to say that this is my team.... get the hell out of here on that one everybody on that team was loyal to Bill Cowher so why don't he cut everybody and start over. How about him cutting him because when he saw the film and saw how overrated he was and that he could not beat the good Tackles anymore there was no way they were paying him that much. Adalius Thomas is a lot more versatile then Porter so don't compare the two, everybody was not begging to get Joey Porter please, Clark Haggans was kept because he makes a lot less then Joey Porter that's a no brainer. Peezy.... ha ha you have to be kidding me, who the hell came up with that nickname.

1. Nah, I'm not going to listen to any memo that tells me to be an idiot. Porter, while not as dominant as he used to be, still is a good LB, and he is loved in the lockerroom. He was a great teammate and leader. He was the heart of our defense. The people who say "let him go" are just looking at stats and $. There's much more to Peezy than that, and it's evidenced by the fact that a few Steelers players have come out and said they don't like the move and think it sends the wrong message.

2. Yeah everyone loved Cowher, but Porter was different. He was fiercely loyal to him, he was outspoken, and his leadership position and the respect he had in the lockerroom put him in a position where if he had any sort of conflict with Tomlin, it would affect the rest of the team. I doubt that would have happened, but it's a legitimate fear. But the biggest thing is that it's symbolic. Porter was Cowher's biggest supporter, and Tomlin cutting him is like a way of saying "this is my team now". That doesn't mean he has to cut everyone, because the point has already been made by cutting Porter.

3. And Peezy, I don't know who exactly thought of it, but it's what all the Steelers call him.
