Bengals | Team likely to target tight end in draft

Fri, 23 Feb 2007 11:06:25 -0800

Mark Curnutte, of the Cincinnati Enquirer, reports the Cincinnati Bengals have been targeting the tight end position thus far at the NFL Combine. The team has spoken with NFL Draft prospect TE Clark Harris (Rutgers).

Well atleast it's day 2 prospect they started out with o_O

If they want a late-round TE, this guy might be worth a flyer (from foxsports combine day 1 roundup)...

After a solid week of practice at the East-West Shrine Game, tight end Michael Allan of Whitworth College in Spokane, Wash., had the attention of the nation. Too small and slow for the major programs out of high school, Allan blew up D-III, gaining 15-20 pounds of muscle every year he was in college, and catching 53 passes for 1,100 yards in his senior season. He shaved his 40 time from a flat 5.0 to the 4.6 he expects to run here. The postseason showing proved he's good enough to compete at a higher level. The combine will decide, to a great extent, whether he bucks the odds and avoids having to break onto a roster as an undrafted free agent.

I hope that's someone Marvin would go for. Sounds like he can only get better.

I thought Kevin Boss looked smoother and as polished than Allan but they're both athletic enough to get looked at by teams who want the stretch TE and a big target underneath. Hard to say about these guys as blockers. Another of these small school big TEs, Zac Herold, didn't get a combine invite but looked like in the Hula Bowl that he could be developed into a decent blocker and receiver.

Clark Harris would seem higher on the Bengals list because he's already a known commodity and would also be the long snapper. But Ben Patrick remains the most intriguing TE for me.

Zach Miller looked like he was pulling a milk truck in the 40 and didn't fare well in the gauntlet either. He almost ran as slow as Heath Miller did a couple years ago. I believe Miller is a tougher player than Olsen and would be a better fit in systems that rely on a TE to run block. But the major difference in speed between the 2 definitely weighs against Miller.

Overall, I'd rather see the Bengals sign their own TEs and use picks for defense.
