HairOnFire
So how come did the Chargers waited till all the head coaching jobs were gone? I'd say it was done on purpose by a GM who flat out hates the now fired head coach.
Kazkal
Mybe they figured since both coordinators are gone they'd just get a fresh start....be intresting what they do rivera is a possabilty but their defense is set for years to be 3-4...PFT seems to think it's Carroll with all the heat he's under, that the reason they let marty go was guy they wanted in first place came available... Stripes
One of the most talented teams in the league will now have zero continuity in the coaching staff for 2007.Good.

MacD BengalFan
The Chargers are blaming Marty for the other members of his coaching staff taking other positions with other teams. They did not like it and Marty took the fall for it.

But what did they expect, that their guys *wouldn't* take head coaching positions if offered them? Come on. So from what I've read, you're right on the motive - though that motive is pretty dumb in my mind. I'd have been honest and just said I fired Marty because he's almost 0-for-life at the playoffs. That said, there's no way they let Marty go unless they were rather pleased with an available candidate, and confident he'd sign with them, I have to agree with PFT on that. So it would seem the list of possible candidates is rather short, and I'd agree in general with the ones PFT mentioned. Carroll, Rivera, and maybe Chucky make sense. Carroll may be more likely to leave now that their recruit let the cat out of the bag about talking with Reggie Bush, making a bad situation a good deal worse.Although AJ Smith and the Spanoses are idiots, so I'll love it if this blows up in their faces. Still, how many guys are going to turn down the chance to take the reigns of a 14-2 team with the best player on the planet and a solid up and coming QB? Kirkendall
Knew it would happen. Not very surprised by this. Farewell Marty I was a little when they already said he'd be back next year, wait a month, then fired him. A little odd if you ask me. jjakq27
I know a lot of people think Marty is a choker, etc., but I really like the guy. He wins everywhere he goes. I'd like to see the Bengals offer him a position somewhere in the organization. I know that won't happen but they hired Chucky Cheese Defense so anything is possible. AMC
The GM will handpick someone for sure....Probably has someone in mind...All the talking heads like Clayton, etc have little idea who it will be...My guess? Rivera.
Stripes
While rummaging around on other message boards, I'm hearing more and more of Jimmy Johnson (not the Philly guy) in this discussion. Has anyone else heard anything about him making a comeback?
HairOnFire
I'll argue that the loss of the assistant coaches played a major role, but not in the way the Chargers are attempting to spin it. After all, it's ridiculous for AJ Smith to claim that he can't work with a man who has been an NFL head coach for as long as Marty has, and if it were actually true then I'd say it reflects very badly on Smith. More likely, the loss of both assistant coaches robbed Marty of enough leverage that Smith simply did now what he's wanted to do for years. There were no assistants left who would complain if Marty were fired after a 14-2 season or revolt if an outsider were brought in as a head coaching replacement. BTW, today probably isn't the best day to argue how much the Bengals need a GM, is it? As for who might be the next head coach, I'll argue that the line forms behind Norm Chow. Whur CHad At?
Bad Move IMO. I think they will go for Pete Carroll, and he might take the job due to the fact the team is close to where he lives. We'll see
Kazkal
My guess? Rivera.Bet you it's not,He's a 4-3 tampa 2 guy not a 3-4 guy....after the year ravens defense had it will be Ryan if it's a Dcoordinator.if they go Defensive guy they need 3-4 guy who understands it because they loss wade and if I'm not mistaken their LB coach who was front runner to take over. Kazkal
CHARGERS TO INTERVIEW RIVERA, RYAN, GIBBSJay Glazer of FOXSports.com reports that the Chargers have received permission to interview Bears defensive coordinator Ron Rivera, Ravens defensive coordinator Rex Ryan, and Saints defensive coordinator Gary Gibbs for the position abruptly vacated on Monday when the Chargers fired coach Marty Schottenheimer.Rivera will interview for the job within the next 48 hours. He was a finalist for the Steelers job. Word on the street, however, is that he has not been interviewing well. Also, Glazer reports, citing team sources, that USC coach Pete Carroll is not regarded as viable option "at this point."We're intrigued by the whole "at this point" thing. If, as we vaguely suspect, a wink-nod deal already has been done with Carroll, and if the team's objective is to keep it all under wraps while a seemingly legitimate interview process unfolds, wouldn't it make sense for the Chargers to put out the word that Carroll isn't in the running until several other candidates have been "interviewed"?We apologize for being so skeptical. But, the last time we checked, this business was full of people who are full of it. (And we all know what "it" is . . . don't we, Nick?)My money is if they wanna go offensive minded guy it will be Caroll if it's defensive minded guy it will be rex ryan...it will be intresting who they get for a defensive coordinator if it's carroll.Mike Singletary woulden't be bad either IMO>
CBin2k7
Pete Carroll is a defensive coach. I don't think he would jump at that job, he has stated that he needs control over personnel decisions and the like. He is not going to get that in San DiegoI look for Norv Turner or Jim Haslett to slide in there.

Questfor31
I not sure what sense it make to fire Marty now. If he was going to be fired anyway, why not get rid of him after the season. Now all the best head coaching candidates are gone, the two coordinators that could have taken over for Marty and eased the transition to a new head coach are both coaching other teams ... this 14-2 team really has to scramble right before the combine, the draft, and free agency.I think the teams that will hurt because of this move are the 49ers or Detroit. If Norv Turner or Mike Martz leave their coordinator positions, those offenses will be in trouble.
