HoosierCat
per da site...http://www.bengals.com/news/news.asp?story_id=5875What the hell, needed to sign him or Wright.
Stripes
I think either would be a suitable backup, and I expect them to try and get Wright back too anyways. Good deal I suppose.
Kazkal
Doug Johnson re-upsBy GEOFF HOBSONFebruary 5, 2007Posted: 1:15 p.m.JohnsonThe Bengals re-signed No. 3 quarterback Doug Johnson for one year Monday, but it’s unclear if they’ll be able to work a similar deal for backup Anthony Wright. For the second straight season, Johnson, 29, didn’t throw a pass last year and was inactive in all but the three games Wright missed with an appendectomy. Wright, who turns 31 next week, played in three games and completed all three of his passes for 31 yards.Even if the Bengals re-sign Wright, it’s believed they’ll think seriously about taking a quarterback late in the draft.-Can we say superbowl.our army of johnsons will not lose one this day! HairOnFire
Probably doesn't mean much short term or long. If they can still re-sign Wright they will. And if they can find a draft pick to groom in the 4th or 5th round they'll pull the trigger regardless of if they have Wright and Johnson under contract. Best, if they find a rookie they're confident they can develope I'd prefer to go that route instead of carrying two marginal veteran backups. BTW, that Lance guy claims the Bengals are very close to re-signing Landon Johnson...with a signed deal expected later in the week.
ShulaSteakhouse
Garcia will not come here obviously. (wants to be a starter)I would rather have Wright than Johnson in a #2 role, but, you're pretty much splitting hairs there. The Bengals definitely need a young QB they can groom, who has some good upside, and a live arm.God forbid Palmer ever goes down, this team would be awful without him at this point, considering that defense as it is now ecspecially. HoosierCat
BTW, that Lance guy claims the Bengals are very close to re-signing Landon Johnson...with a signed deal expected later in the week. That may be a little strong. From Lance's blog...Things I'm hearing about LandonIf a contract extension for Landon Johnson doesn't get done by Tues., then the Bengals will tender him and dare a team to sign him to a deal - which the Bengals can match. In essence come Wed., if Landon doesn't have a deal then the Bengals are content to let another team do their negotiating.Certainly worth keeping an eye on. It will be interesting to see what Landon gets. I don't see any team as being willing to give him a big deal + cough up a pick for him, so that likely makes the tender a killer for him in FA. But a long-term deal will likely require something in the $4m/year neighborhood, and that strikes me as a bit pricey for LJ.
HairOnFire
Serves me right for passing along anything from that guy as I really should know better. Regardless, this is what he had on the blog a couple of days ago. Apparently, the details that soon followed included the possibility that there'd be no deal at all. (I hate that guy.) "Bengals rumblings I'm hearing - Bengals could have an extension to announce for Landon Johnson later in the coming week. Details to follow." Kazkal
I would be fine with landon as our wlb or 1# backup aslong as we had 2 studs in the other spots.
HoosierCat
I would be fine with landon as our wlbWell, I think that's the question. It seems to me that the coin necessary to re-sign Landon is going to be borderline-starter-level. If you think he's your future there, pay the man.If not, well, you have to think hard about what you do, if after giving him the minimum tender, someone offers him, and you could let him go for their third round pick. (Especially if you can sign Miller much cheaper, which they almost certainly can.)Bottom line is that Simmons isn't getting any younger, or any better, and IMHO it's about time to sh*t or get off the pot concerning the WSL spot. Whur CHad At?
Garcia will not come here obviously. (wants to be a starter)Thats not true. Garcia said he wants to be a starter, but would rather be on a winning team(If he doesn't re-sign with the Eagles). If he was to be a starter, it would be for a sucky team which is not what he wants

HoosierCat
Another FA note from kffl that caught my eye today:49ers | Contract update: Mark Roman?Wed, 7 Feb 2007 10:32:17 -0800Matt Maiocco, of the Santa Rosa Press Democrat, reports the three-year contract extension signed by S Mark Roman late last season was for $4.5 million and includes a $2 million signing bonus.I thought this notable because I've been wondering what the market will be like for K2's services come March. He gets burned some but he has a knack for making plays, too, and honestly I've just always liked him. If he moves on I won't be all broken up about it, but if they can hang on to him I think they should. His and Roman's numbers are pretty comparable -- in fact they're virtually identical -- except for interceptions: 5 for Roman vs. 15 for K2 (inc. 6 for K2 last year). Roman's 30 this year, K2 will be 31.So...if Roman gets a deal with a $2m SB and an average payout of $1.5m/year, what's K2's market value? Maybe 3 years, $6m, inc. a $2.5m SB? (Not sure what K2 re-upped for in '04, either -- anyone has numbers let me know.) Given his age they might try a 2-year deal; OTOH he has less wear-and-tear since he's only played 6 seasons. Spain
Johnson is in his second year, he should be better.
HairOnFire
Ignore the stats. Stats are just a collection of numbers that usually mean nothing and if mishandled or misunderstood can result in crazy posters claiming that Dexter Jackson was no better than Ifayani Olahete. Use your eyes. K2 is at least twice the player that Mark Roman is.
HoosierCat
Use your eyes. K2 is at least twice the player that Mark Roman is.I might agree, but it's a documented reality that Mikey & the Bengals F.O. doesn't. Remember their go-around with Dillon over who he should be compared to? They were trying to peg him to someone (I forget exactly who) who was clearly not in the same league. But anyhow, if K2 is indeed worth twice what Roman is...do you pay $9m over three years, including a $4m SB, for a 31-year-old backup DB? Heck, your buddy Dexter got just $3m to sign and less than $2m a year -- and he's a starter.
