How do we stop the Chargers?

Terrence Kiel was arrested the other day for urinating in public. This is the 8th incident for the Chargers since April.

I am outraged that our 9 may not be good enough any more. I blame Mike Brown for a lack of competence. He was the one that talked Marvin out of drafting some of the other idiots and thugs that he wanted. We need a GM that will be able to flush out the best and brightest of the criminal element and get them on this team.

I think it is time to hold Marvin and his staff accountable for the action of these players as well. 9 is just not enough. If he and his staff are unable to bring out the worst in these guys then it is time to let them all go and start over. Expand the scouting department to get the best morons even from the smaller schools.

I want a full starting 11 with criminal records or I won't be happy. Someday I want to forfeit a game due to lack of players.

Damn those Chargers!!!! Don`t they know when to give up? I hope Carson gets arrested for pushing heroin soon; that will give our guys a much needed morale boost. It is a time like this where you stars have to shine. Maybe CJ will cut some fool during his Superbowl show, allowing the nation to see it, thus securing the criminal lombardi trophy for the Bengals!

I think the Bengals need to take that next step -- and start having members of the coaching staff and the front office get arrested. I know Bob Bratkowski was way out in front on this one a few years ago, but the coaches have really dropped the ball since, and the good behavior endemic to the front office is just unacceptable.

This is one area where I really do think Mike Brown needs to take the lead...

The broader question is relelvant, though. The Chargers, almost equally as criminally minded of late (equal, if you count in Shawn Merriman's cheating), and largely given a pass.

By the way, the Bears have been criminal fools of late as well, with a bunch of arrests and "incidents" dating back to that weird gun range stuff. And largely given a pass.

And, the even larger question, given that San Diego and Chicago are among the most arrested teams after Cincinnnati, what does that do to the panty bunchers thesis that Cincy's arrests are dragging this team down? The Chargers and Bears had pretty damn successful years. Arrests included.

Perhaps, and just throwing this out there, on-field matter more than off-field? Maybe kinda?

Outside of Tank Johnson, the Bears haven't had many problems this year. But they certainly didn't get a pass from the local media over Tank's gun collection. The Chargers have taken heat as well; I dunno how many stories I've seen in the last few months in which both teams were cited as examples of athletes behaving badly.

As for why both went to the playoffs, well, look at the schedule. The Chargers had the easist sked in the AFC, and something like the 3rd easiest overall. The Bears had the easiest sked in the NFL by far.

I can see it now. Bratkowski going to the drive-through at Wendy's........ naked. Wait, "see it now" is a bad choice of words. Actually, there's probably no choice of words that would make sense. Huh? Bye.

I've already plowed this ground several times.

In short, the Chargers are given a pass because they won more games in the AFC than any other team, and their failure to advance in the playoffs has largely been written of as yet another example of Martyball....or simply an example of a dumb team giving the game away to the very brainy Patriots. And then there's the whole Tom Brady legend thing to fall back on. Regardless, it's pretty clear the Chargers aren't included in the poor character rant as often as the Bengals simply because there are other existing storylines involving that team that have to be indulged. And the Bengals went 8-8, right?

Moving on, the Bears have also gotten a media pass because...(wait for it)...they're in the Super Bowl. Only lately has the Tank Johnson example been given the type of scrutiny that a minor Bengal arrest seems to generate, and the spotlight has remained on the Tanker only then because he refuses to apologize...an act of non-contrition that sorely tweaks the easily bent. But again, the poor character rant doesn't stick as easily to the Bears because they're a team that won over and over again....week after week.

Frankly, both teams do a great job of proving the point that you can't win with nothing but church mice, but that's not a lesson that's going to be very popular anywhere....so it's conveniently ignored whenever possible. And it's always possible, right?

However, ESPN writer David Fleming did a great article on this very subject several months ago and concluded that, due to their high productivity and relative low cost, the Bengals were well served by drafting Chris Henry and Odell Thurman....prompting a now familiar display of message board hand-wringing and excuse making.

To be fair, the fair citizens of Chicago and San Diego have had to suffer from the embarrassment and guilty feelings that can arise while supporting teams that were briefly tagged with damning nicknames like...the Chicago Barely Legals and the San Diego Criminal Chargers. But all things considered, I'd say both groups of citizens seem to be dealing with the pangs of hypocrisy much better than those who live in Cincy.

Those fans have, however, been spared the even more debilitating embarassment that comes from having your starting QB voice cartoons. Lucky bastards.

Kinda gives "you wanna Biggie-size that for only 59 cents more?" a new meaning.

Yes, yes you have. I am, certainly, an admirer of your tireless work on this score. Just taking my turn pulling the plow.
